Philosophy, (from
Greek, philosophia, “love of wisdom”)
the rational, abstract, and methodical
consideration of reality as a whole or
of fundamental dimensions of human
existence and experience.
Philosophical inquiry is a central
element in the intellectual history of
many civilizations.
6. Branches of philosophy
There are four main branches of
philosophy
Epistemology
Metaphysics
Logic
Axiology
7. Branches of philosophy
Epistemology:
Epistme = Knowledge /
Understanding
Logia/logos = Study
“A branch of philosophy that deals with
the knowledge , types of knowledge
and the way of producing knowledge”
8. Branches of philosophy
Metaphysics:
It encompasses everything that is exists,
as well the nature of existence itself.
It says whether the world is real, or
merely an illusion. It is fundamental view
of world around us.
9. Branches of philosophy
Logic:
Logic is reasoning (philosophy)
conducted of assessed according to strict
principles of validity.
o Valid – A deductive argument is valid
if and only if it makes it impossible for
the premises to be true and the
conclusion to nevertheless be false.
o Sound – A deductive argument is
sound if the premises are actually
10. Branches of philosophy
Axiology:
Axia = Value / Worth
Logia/logos = Study
Axiology is the philosophical study of
value. It is either the collective term for ethics
and aesthetics-
Axiology is usually divided into two main parts.
1. Ethics: the study of values in human
behavior
2. Æsthetics: the study of value in the arts
12. Difference b/w philosophy and
Science
”Science” comes from a Latin word (scientia),
while “philosophy” was derived from the Greek
“philosophia.”
Philosophy creates knowledge through thinking;
science does the same by observing.
Philosophy uses logical arguments and dialectics
while science uses hypothesis testing (empirical-
based).
Everything is explained in philosophy in everyday
words and logic that anyone with average
intelligence can understand. On the other hand,
scientific explanation requires help from
13. Why it is important?
I think philosophy is important for two
main reasons:
(1) It can help improve critical thinking
skills
(2) It's a good way to know certain things.
When science is done very
badly, it's often appropriately called
“pseudoscience;” and when
philosophy is done very badly, it's often
appropriately called “sophistry.”
