Thomas Hobbes believed that humans seek peace but will defend themselves by any means necessary, forming social contracts and governments to escape a "state of nature". John Locke believed that humans are reasonable and tolerant by nature, and have a right to revolution against oppressive governments. Jean-Jacques Rousseau believed that individuals must join together in societies to live freely and comfortably, and that the whole of society is greater than any individual within it.
