This document provides instructions for an explanatory essay assignment. Students must choose one logical fallacy covered in class and analyze how it is exemplified in a fiction or non-fiction text. The essay should (1) explain the fallacy, (2) introduce the relevant moment from the text, (3) provide context for the moment, (4) unpack the moment and how it shows the fallacy, and (5) conclude. The essay requires a minimum of four quotes and must follow an analytic template with an introduction, body paragraphs analyzing topics, and a conclusion. It is due on March 16th and must be four pages long with MLA formatting and at least 1000 words.

What is the point of this paragraph?
What claim is being made?
Often, the point is the TOPIC SENTENCE. The topic sentence for each body paragraph needs to be arguable, one that a reader can agree or disagree with. By stating a claim in your topic sentence, you are letting your reader know that you will support your claim by providing illustrations and explanation/analysis in the rest of the paragraph.
I = Illustration
How is the point supported with specific data, experiences, or other factual material?
The illustration is the evidence used to support/develop the point.
E = Explanation
What does the provided information mean? The explanation is the writer's analysis, elaboration, evaluation of the point and information given, connecting the information with the point (topic sentence) and the thesis.

Ruth’s method of dealing with the pain she experiences is by turning outward. Ruth herself describes that, even as a young girl, she had an urge to run, to feel the freedom and the movement of her legs pumping as fast as they can (42). As an adult, Ruth still feels the urge to run. Following her second husband’s death, James points out that, “while she weebled and wobbled and leaned, she did not fall. She responded with speed and motion. She would not stop moving” (163). As she biked, walked, rode the bus all over the city, “she kept moving as if her life depended on it, which in some ways it did. She ran, as she had done most of her life, but this time she was running for her own sanity” (164). The image of running that McBride uses supports his understanding of his mother as someone who does not stop and consider what is happening in her life yet is able to move ahead. Movement provides the solution, although a temporary one, and preserves her sanity. Discrete moments of action preserve her sense of her own strength and offer her new alternatives for the future. Even McBride’s sentence structure in the paragraph about his mother’s running supports the effectiveness of her spurts of action without reflection. Possible Issues:
The class will come up with a list of possible topics. You will want to choose a topic about which you are excited; one that intrigues you and that will hold your interest for the weeks that you work on this essay. Remember that the best essays attempt to answer questions (what is the work saying about income inequality?); they don’t start with answers. In short, your thesis should be able to be debated.
Process:
After choosing an issue that interests you, return to the text. Skim the text with this issue in mind, marking down relevant passages. As you revise the essay, think about organization and argument support, be sure you cite specific details, lines, passages or scenes to support your claims, and be sure you explain how they support your claims. Remember that revision is not correction, it is a re-seeing of your argument and involves content and organization. Finally, edit the essay at the sentence level for style and grammar. The final version of the essay is due with the first draft(s) attached.

Purpose of The Article Critique Paper
1). Psychological Purpose
This paper serves several purposes, the first of which is helping you gain insight into research papers in psychology. As this may be your first time reading and writing papers in psychology, one goal of Paper I is to give you insight into what goes into such papers. This article critique paper will help you learn about the various sections of an empirical research report by reading at least one peer-reviewed articles (articles that have a Title Page, Abstract*, Literature Review, Methods Section, Results Section, and References Page—I have already selected some articles for you to critique, so make sure you only critique one in the folder provided on Canvas) This paper will also give you some insights into how the results sections are written in APA formatted research articles. Pay close attention to those sections, as throughout this course you’ll be writing up some results of your own!
In this relatively short paper, you will read one of five articles posted on Canvas and summarize what the authors did and what they found. The first part of the paper should focus on summarizing the design the authors used for their project. How to Write a Analytical Essay
Writing an analytical essay can seem daunting, especially if you've never done it before. Don't
worry! Take a deep breath, buy yourself a caffeinated beverage, and follow these steps to create
a well-crafted analytical essay.
What do you want to analyze?
Your analysis must have the following four sections:
Introduction
Summary
Analysis
Conclusion (optional)
Part 1: Prewriting your essay
1. Understand the objective of an analytical essay. An analytical essay means you will
need to present some type of argument, or claim, about what you are analyzing. Most
often you will have to analyze another piece of writing or a film, but you could also be
asked to analyze an issue, or an idea. To do this, you must break the topic down into parts
and provide evidence, either from the text/film or from your own research, that supports
your claim.
For example, "Stanley Kubrick's The Shining uses a repeating motif of Native American
culture and art to comment on America's history of colonizing Native Americans' lands" is an
analytical thesis. It is analyzing a particular text and setting forth an argument about it in the
form of a thesis statement.
2. Decide what to write about. If you are writing this for a class, your teacher will
generally assign you a topic (or topics) to write about. Read the prompt carefully. What is
the prompt asking you to do? However, sometimes you will have to come up with your
own topic.
If you're writing an analytical essay about a work of fiction, you could focus your
argument on what motivates a specific character or group of characters. Or, you could
argue why a certain line or paragraph is central to the work as a whole. For example:
Explore the concept of vengeance in the epic poem Beowulf.
If you're writing about a historical event, try focusing on the forces that contributed to
what happened.
If you're writing about scientific research or findings, analyze your results.

3. Brainstorm. You may not immediately know what your thesis statement should be, even
once you've chosen your topic. That's okay! Doing some brainstorming can help you
discover what you think about your topic. Consider it from as many angles as you can.

Look for repeated imagery, metaphors, phrases, or ideas. Things that repeat are often
important. See if you can decipher why these things are so crucial. Do they repeat in the
same way each time, or differently?
How does the text work? If you're writing a rhetorical analysis, for example, you might
analyze how the author uses logical appeals to support her argument and decide whether
you think the argument is effective. If you're analyzing a creative work, consider things
like imagery, visuals in a film, etc. If you're analyzing research, you may want to
consider the methods and results and analyze whether the experiment is a good design.

Welcome to Essentials of English Composition 101. My name is Stacie Vesolich, and I will be your instructor for this course. I commend you for enrolling in this course as a path to furthering your academic goals, and I will make every effort to help you to achieve success in your writing endeavors. Let me begin by highlighting several key points of this course:
Essentials of English Composition 101
8 Modules and a Final Research Paper
There are 8 modules, culminating with a final research paper as the exam.
Each module is different, and it is very important that you read the instructions for every module.
The beginning module requires you to do several writing, practice exercises. This is mandatory, even though the practice exercises are not graded.
The modules start out relatively easy (a descriptive essay and a narrative essay that are written on your firsthand experiences and do not require any writing citations.)
Be advised that the modules build on each other, progressively becoming more difficult.
As your instructor, I have 3 days ( per module) to grade your work. My response to your essay submissions usually does not take three days, although I am granted that amount of time.
Read, Write, Submit, Wait
English courses require that the writer addresses the writing prompt. This can only be done if the writer carefully reads the specific directions.
After you submit your essay, wait for the remarks and critique before submitting another module.
In some instances, you may be required to submit a revision of your essay.
The option to do a revision on the submitted essay is your choice, but is to your advantage.
Progression of Difficulty
Each writing module develops a specific skill and the level of difficulty of these writing skills increases as the course progresses.
Be sure to carefully read all of the instructions and view any videos that apply to the module.
Always address the writing prompt: This is the specific instructional requirement for the essay.
Research and Sources
For this course, when you present information that is based on research that you have reviewed and studied, you must provide two types of sources:
1) Parenthetical or in-text citations For example: (Smith 22)
2) A works cited page that is in alphabetical order.
3) I will use an electronic scan to verify that the work submitted is your original work, or work that has been properly cited.
Remember that you have signed an honesty agreement about the work that you will submit.

Purpose of The Article Critique Paper
1). Psychological Purpose
This paper serves several purposes, the first of which is helping you gain insight into research papers in psychology. As this may be your first time reading and writing papers in psychology, one goal of Paper I is to give you insight into what goes into such papers. This article critique paper will help you learn about the various sections of an empirical research report by reading at least one peer-reviewed articles (articles that have a Title Page, Abstract*, Literature Review, Methods Section, Results Section, and References Page—I have already selected some articles for you to critique, so make sure you only critique one in the folder provided on Canvas) This paper will also give you some insights into how the results sections are written in APA formatted research articles. Pay close attention to those sections, as throughout this course you’ll be writing up some results of your own!
In this relatively short paper, you will read one of five articles posted on Canvas and summarize what the authors did and what they found. The first part of the paper should focus on summarizing the design the authors used for their project. That is, you will identify the independent and dependent variables, talk about how the authors carried out their study, and then summarize the results (you don’t need to fully understand the statistics in the results, but try to get a sense of what the authors did in their analyses). In the second part of the paper, you will critique the article for its methodological strengths and weaknesses. Finally, in part three, you will provide your references for the Article Critique Paper in APA format.
2). APA Formatting Purpose
The second purpose of the Article Critique paper is to teach you proper American Psychological Association (APA) formatting. In the instructions below, I tell you how to format your paper using APA style. There are a lot of very specific requirements in APA papers, so pay attention to the instructions below as well as Chapter 14 in your textbook! I highly recommend using the Paper I Checklist before submitting your paper, as it will help walk you through the picky nuances of APA formatting.
3). Writing Purpose
Finally, this paper is intended to help you grow as a writer. Few psychology classes give you the chance to write papers and receive feedback on your work. This class will! We will give you feedback on this paper in terms of content, spelling, and grammar.

In preparation for Essay 3 and by completing your textbook readings, you will be equipped to respond by objectively compiling information from a variety of sources to compose an essay that understands and practices reading, writing, and rhetoric within the context of a biblical worldview; applies methods of sound reasoning; produces well-structured essays; integrates sources accurately and effectively; writes with clarity; recognizes standard usage in English grammar, word choice (diction), phraseology, and sentence structure; and applies knowledge of sentence structure to basic sentence editing and revision (Syllabus MLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F, G and Module/Week 8 LOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Develop an outline for your cause and effect argument essay that includes a clear thesis statement and a plan of support. In addition, include at least 4 quotations, 1 summary,and 1 paraphrases into your essay from at least 3 outside sources to support your thesis statement and provide opposing argument(s). Write a cause and effect argument in which you answer one of the following questions:

1. Consider the theme of love through the fiction (the Oscar Wilde fairytales), the poetry (Shakespeare’s Sonnets) and drama (Twelfth Night). Compare and contrast the various types of love in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night with other works we have covered.
2. Could Terra Nova be considered a tragedy in the classical mold? Use Aristotle’s characteristics of a classic tragedy and characteristics of a tragic hero, and the classic/modern dramatic unities to support your assumption.
3. Explore the connection between love and madness and/ or love and fooling (being a fool) in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Consider the idea of love being an illness which can be caught and, in its extremes, can lead to madness. If you see a connection between love and “being a fool” that connection can also be explored through Shakespeare’s play.
4. Consider how Twelfth Night bridges the ideas of classical and modern drama by examining how the play adheres to the classical ideas of drama (including the classical unities and the characteristics of classical tragedy and classical comedy) and the modern ideas of drama (including the modern unities.
5. Explore the role fate versus self-determination changes through the dramas.
6. A foil is a character, which contrasts with another character in a story: highlighting characteristics or traits present or absence from a main character. Examine the use of the foil in Terra Nova, Twelfth Night or Antigone.
7. The idea of “the game” is important in Terra Nova. What is “the game” and what importance does it hold in the story?
8. Sophocles’ drama Antigone is appropriately considered a classic tragedy; however, questions have been raised as to who is the protagonist of the play. How to Write a Analytical Essay
Writing an analytical essay can seem daunting, especially if you've never done it before. Don't
worry! Take a deep breath, buy yourself a caffeinated beverage, and follow these steps to create
a well-crafted analytical essay.
What do you want to analyze?
Your analysis must have the following four sections:
Introduction
Summary
Analysis
Conclusion (optional)
Part 1: Prewriting your essay
1. Understand the objective of an analytical essay. An analytical essay means you will
need to present some type of argument, or claim, about what you are analyzing. Most
often you will have to analyze another piece of writing or a film, but you could also be
asked to analyze an issue, or an idea. To do this, you must break the topic down into parts
and provide evidence, either from the text/film or from your own research, that supports
your claim.
For example, "Stanley Kubrick's The Shining uses a repeating motif of Native American
culture and art to comment on America's history of colonizing Native Americans' lands" is an
analytical thesis. It is analyzing a particular text and setting forth an argument about it in the
form of a thesis statement.
2. Decide what to write about. If you are writing this for a class, your teacher will
generally assign you a topic (or topics) to write about. Read the prompt carefully. What is
the prompt asking you to do? However, sometimes you will have to come up with your
own topic.
If you're writing an analytical essay about a work of fiction, you could focus your
argument on what motivates a specific character or group of characters. Or, you could
argue why a certain line or paragraph is central to the work as a whole. For example:
Explore the concept of vengeance in the epic poem Beowulf.
If you're writing about a historical event, try focusing on the forces that contributed to
what happened.
If you're writing about scientific research or findings, analyze your results.

3. Brainstorm. You may not immediately know what your thesis statement should be, even
once you've chosen your topic. That's okay! Doing some brainstorming can help you
discover what you think about your topic. Consider it from as many angles as you can.

Look for repeated imagery, metaphors, phrases, or ideas. Things that repeat are often
important. See if you can decipher why these things are so crucial. Do they repeat in the
same way each time, or differently?
How does the text work? If you're writing a rhetorical analysis, for example, you might
analyze how the author uses logical appeals to support her argument and decide whether
you think the argument is effective. If you're analyzing a creative work, consider things
like imagery, visuals in a film, etc. If you're analyzing research, you may want to
consider the methods and results and analyze whether the experiment is a good design.

For this essay, select one of the fallacies we have covered thus far, and show how this fallacy
is exemplified by one other reading we have done--either a fiction or non-fiction text. That
is, how does the course text (that you have chosen) provide a situation, an argument, a
moment, that reveals the workings of the fallacy specifically.
From an organizational standpoint, in your essay, first explain the fallacy. You will want to
(1) explain the basic thesis, and (2) any other idea(s) that your developing analysis will
refer back to. Then, introduce the moment from the fiction/non-fiction reading that
connects with the fallacy. (3) Provide the broad context for the moment you are analyzing,
(4) followed by an unpacking of the moment or moments, and finally, (5) how the fallacy is
being realized through the sequence.
This essay should have a minimum of four substantial quotes.
This essay needs to follow the traditional analytic template. You need to have an
introduction that will state the article’s name, the author, the particular issues of each body
paragraph. Then, in terms of the body, the first sentence should introduce the topic, the
second should introduce the quote, next implement the actual quote, follow that by an in-
depth explanation of the meaning of the quote/why it is significant as a concept, and finally
transition to the next proposition. Be sure to have a conclusion as well. Failure to follow this
