7 Ways Insurance Brokers Should Approach InsurTechSiren Group
“InsurTech” is a term used quite often these days – a spin-off of the even more popular word “FinTech.” It refers to technologies and platforms. These platforms can help optimize any of the principles for success or requirements of insurance.
InsurTech encompasses companies that provide insurance, but engage technology in a user-centric way.
Here are 7 ways of making InsurTech the heart of your business:
A survey created by InsurtechNews in collaboration with InsurTech 2016 Singapore, involving over 120 respondents. Based on the answers collected, the most relevant area of Insurtech is Connected Insurance and this is not surprising at all. According to a preliminary release of a study jointly developed by Venture Scanner together with the Connected Insurance Observatory, connected insurance initiatives represent 30% of start-ups but have gathered an astonishing 80% of insurtech funding. Online purchases continue to be deemed as very relevant although such promise is everything but new and has yet to materialize. Things may change though if the new purchase innovation is push sales...
Unsurprisingly, respondents also indicated that insufficient knowledge and understanding of the insurance market is the most important challenge for InsurTech start-ups and creates an imperative for collaboration between incumbents and start-ups. The second barrier is the incapacity to engage and partner with incumbents. This point confirms the importance of all open innovation initiatives of the last few months: from hackathons to co-creation labs, from incubators to accelerators. They are all fundamental to allow start-ups to access incumbents and vice-versa.

China Mobile Advertising Landscape Report (Thomvest Ventures)Thomvest Ventures
This report examines China's digital advertising industry, with a specific focus on mobile. Our goal with this research is to grasp the many nuances of advertising technology in China – what role does programmatic play, who are the key vendors in the space, what challenges do these vendors face, and how do we expect the market to evolve over the next several years?
The banking industry appears to be undergoing a renaissance driven by changing consumer behavior and technical innovation. Software is eating the industry. In retrospect, we can see how the first wave of innovation came in areas such as online account access and payments. Changing consumer behavior (such as the shift to mobile) and the use of big data has enabled increasingly complex transactions (such as lending and asset management) to move online. Consumers have largely stopped going to retail branches, and reserve the occasional branch visit for major one-off transactions.
Our first investment in the financial services industry came many years ago with an investment in LendingClub. We put both equity and debt into the company, making a sizable purchase of loans via the platform itself. We saw the company’s potential to bring marketplace dynamics and software disruption to the lending industry. The end goal for borrowers and investors on the platform was simple: lower cost loans for borrowers, increased yields for investors, and high levels of customer satisfaction. As a result, LendingClub has grown into a sizable public company. With experience on the platform and a realization of the potentially transformative nature of this model, we’ve gone on to invest in companies across the online lending space: Kabbage (www.kabbage.com), LendUp (www.lendup.com), and SoFi (www.sofi.com).
The renaissance in financial services has drawn in substantial amounts of venture capital. In the past year alone, the number of fintech deals has grown 16% and the capital funded is up 46%.
While many entrepreneurs develop expertise in the specific segment they intend to disrupt, we’ve noticed that startups usually don’t have the time or resources to look outside their niche and understand how they fit into the larger context of banking and lending markets. To help put the industry in perspective, we developed an overview of the banking industry in the US. What’s remarkable is not only the insights this gives into the financial lives of Americans (be it millenials or seniors), but also the perspective this gives us on the large banks we’ve all come to use. Indeed, consolidation over the last several decades has led the four major banks (JP Morgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo) to hold around half of the market’s depository assets.
Today we’re happy to provide the first version of this industry overview. We’ve chosen brevity over depth, so as to provide a snapshot of the overall banking landscape. We’ll continue to iterate on this overview and welcome questions and comments. In subsequent posts, we plan to provide deeper dives into sectors that are of interest to both ourselves and others. We look forward to contributing to what feels like yet another opportunity to be at the front door of history-making companies.
In this report we provide an overview of the native advertising ecosystem, with a specific focus on native advertising delivered programmatically. We touch on the native advertising market size, key vendors in the space, recent updates from incumbent advertising companies like Facebook, Google, Yahoo & Twitter, and key challenges and opportunities within the native ads market.
VCs have for the most part retreated from investing in Bitcoin and Blockchain. The appetite for blockchain products however has only increased. Corporations have formed consortiums such as R3 and the Hyperledger Project to learn more about the technology. Numerous enterprises have rolled out internal pilots to test and explore the applications of blockchain.
At Thomvest, we believe blockchain adoption is about to take off - making it a prime time for VCs to begin making early stage bets.
Take a look at our most recent research report which delves into the current state of blockchain.

Merisis Advisors has a dedicated team focused on fund raising and M&A in the Technology sector. As part of our internal intelligence work, we spent time recently in understanding the key investment trends in the Technology sector in 2013 - with the expectation that this would give us a heads up on the likely trends for 2014 too. The study was based on secondary research backed by conversations with key VC players to validate some of our hypothesis.
The study threw up some interesting trends, useful to both the technology companies as well as the Investor community. We decided then to take the extra effort to put our findings and analysis in the form of a report for the benefit of the larger audience.

Abstract
Insurance companies have played a big role in ensuring that they take risks on behalf of the insured. By being insured, the insured is able to have peace of mind. A good protection and management are done for your business. However, in order to be successful in the insurance sector, there are several participants who play key roles in the sector. This project shows how one of the participants, the insurance broker, works in this sector.
An insurance broker is one of the participants who help the company in selling and negotiating insurance for compensation. The insurance broker duty is to work and get the best interest of the insured or his client and provide the right advice, which is independent of any influence of the insurance company in terms of professional advice.
This project shows a framework of all the roles of the insurance broker in the insurance company into much detail. An insurance broker is very important in the insurance company in ensuring its success. In this project, the insurance broker is the main theme and a clear illustration is made on how they bring an effect in the sector. The growth of the insurance services sector is illustrated how it has affected by the presence of the insurance broker in the sector.
A close statistical data review of the insurance sector is undertaken in the project. A review of how Marsh &McLennan shows the role of their insurance broker is laid out. They particularly deal with clients and new customers by explaining to them the products offered by the company and the benefit they get from it. The project talks about how to avoid risks that insurers are exposed to, and how strategies on how to grow in the sector.

2014 Property & Casualty Insurance Industry Outlook: Innovation leading the wayDeloitte United States
On the surface the property and casualty sector appears to be doing quite well, but running an insurance carrier is rarely smooth sailing. The last few years have been particularly difficult for those occupying C-Suite positions, as more fundamental issues are threatening not only short-term results on their balance sheets, but challenging the long-term viability of their operating models as well.
For example, a growing number of insurers are facing significant organizational disruption. Many have made large-scale investments in technology, replacing core systems for claims, policy administration and finance. Their chief challenge now is how to effectively leverage the new systems they’ve put in place and maintain their momentum with additional innovations in personnel, products and culture.
Additionally, ongoing political gridlock in Washington could undermine an already unsteady economic recovery. Not to mention regulatory uncertainty that makes it difficult for carriers to plan ahead and determine operational priorities.
Innovation may ultimately be the key to keep insurers growing regardless of shifting economic and insurance market conditions, as they devise ways to thwart ongoing and emerging competitive threats as well as capitalize on new opportunities.

Health and auto insurance account for the majority of early insurance investments. Health and auto are two of the largest
segments within insurance, which explains the interest from Silicon Valley.

7. Startups don’t necessarily have the upperhand
• Brand awareness and marketing spend
• Capital requirements
• State licensing and regulation
• More agile internal processes
• Lack of legacy systems and products
• Talent recruitment
• Lack of stringent regulatory scrutiny (SIFI)
You are building two identical houses; would you rather remodel an existing house or start from scratch?
Challenges for Startups Startup Advantages
It depends. Certain aspects are easier to build from scratch, and certain aspects are not.
The target market and product of the insurance startup matters.
8. VC considerations
Product offering
Does the startup have a compelling value proposition?
Is the product advantage evident to customers?
Is the improvement a nice to have or a need to have?
Investment Criteria
How much capital will need to be invested to reach break even?
What is the time horizon for an exit?
Industry Experience
Does the management team understand the dynamics of the insurance business?
Does the company understand the regulatory environment?
Business Processes
How quickly can the company train their underwriting models?
Can the company identify and attract low risk customers?
How well diversified is the company’s portfolio?
Marketing Expenditures
Can the company market and sell to customers at a reasonable cost?
9. Where is this all going?
We believe insurtech will play out in a very similar manner to how fintech – specifically lending - has played
out.
Namely:
Partnerships will be vital for startups to reach scale. Startups will struggle to work around insurance
company timelines, as partnerships are more urgent for the startups
Insurance companies will feel pressure to innovate as new products enter the market. Executives and
management will need to adopt and promote a culture of change
Once startups reach scale, regulators will pay closer attention to the operations of insurtech startups –
potentially fining companies for actions taken years prior
As winners are determined, consolidation among startups will occur. Insurance companies will need to
be mindful of the shifting startup ecosystem
