Personal Statement Dr. AhmedRasheed
My decision to become a doctor goes back to my teenage years. I had always been interested in
Biology which was my favorite subject at school. I was fascinated and enthralled by living things,
especiallyanimals but plants as well. I was deeply interested how living things function, how they
reproduce and the way they interact with their environment. Genetics, Neurosciences and
Developmental Biology were my favorite subjects in Biology. As a child, I had kept birds, cats and
fishes as pets and was very fond of holding them. This deep interest in Biology led me to pursue a
career in Medicine. Medicine gave me the opportunity to not only study Biology in detail but also
practice applying biological principles in real life.
I had always been interested in Neurosciences and Genetics, I wanted to pursue a career in
Psychiatry or Pediatrics. I had worked in Old Age Psychiatry as well as General Adult Psychiatry in
U.K. In psychiatrythere canbe no standardprocedure, nomindlessprotocol:eachpatientisunique,
and each patient has something unique to return to the psychiatrist. Psychiatrists can work in
metropolitan or regional settings, in the public sector, or as a private practitioner. The range
of subspecialties covers all developmental stages of life and a variety of social needs. I
particularlyenjoyworkingcloselywithpatients and people, and personally feel that Mental Illness
can be far more devastating than other types of illness.
In Pakistan I had worked in Paediatrics in a local Government Hospital. I have an experience with
people belonging to all age groups, different cultures, and in different specialties. I found the
Pediatrics to be intellectually challenging. I had learned that Paediatrics is a unique field in many
respects.First, children’s physiologyisdifferent and continuously changing as they grow. Second, it
requiresanaptitude forworking with children and parents as well as the ability to handle complex
social issues.Duringmyexperience in Paediatrics I was comfortable working with children, parents
and other child health workers.
I want to work in UK because it offers good training opportunities for doctors and its Healthcare
systemisone of the bestinthe world. Afterpassingmymembershipexams of Royal College, I’ll be
more diligent, competentandbe able toexcel in my career. Moreover I am familiar with U.K health
system as I had already worked in Psychiatry.
