The rail industry in the UK is undergoing vast infrastructure investment and development which is unprecedented. This will create significant demand for new workforce skills but there is currently a large skills gap, with over 4,500 experienced workers in traction and rolling stock due to retire in the next 5 years. Efforts are being made to address this gap through new qualifications, training facilities, and apprenticeship programs. Condition-based maintenance is also being adopted to improve maintenance practices and optimize workforce resources as the industry grows. Collaboration across the industry will be important to ensure the skills gap is filled and the infrastructure investment is not hindered by a lack of qualified workers.
