Blogging refers to writing, photography, and other media that's self-published online. Blogging started as an opportunity for individuals to write diary-style entries, but it has since been incorporated into websites for many businesses. The hallmarks of blogging include frequent updates, informal language, and opportunities for readers to engage and start a conversation.
Here's an overview of what a blog is, why it's popular, and tips for starting your own blog.
What Is Blogging?
The word blog is actually a shortened form of its original name, "weblog." These weblogs allowed early internet users to "log" the details of their day in diary-style entries. Blogs often allow readers to comment, so as they became more common, communities sprung up around popular blogs.
Note
The content of blogs varies significantly. For example, travel blogs may feature many pictures with few written passages, while political blogs may weigh in with wordy takes on the news of the day. The popularity of YouTube and similar sites also gave rise to video blogging, or "vlogging."
Like most internet-based innovations, many entrepreneurs saw marketing potential in having a blog, and the adoption of blogging among the business community helped further increase the popularity of the medium. Not only can a blog be used for marketing a business, but it can also become a home business in and of itself.

# Internet Security: Safeguarding Your Digital World
In the contemporary digital age, the internet is a cornerstone of our daily lives. It connects us to vast amounts of information, provides platforms for communication, enables commerce, and offers endless entertainment. However, with these conveniences come significant security challenges. Internet security is essential to protect our digital identities, sensitive data, and overall online experience. This comprehensive guide explores the multifaceted world of internet security, providing insights into its importance, common threats, and effective strategies to safeguard your digital world.
## Understanding Internet Security
Internet security encompasses the measures and protocols used to protect information, devices, and networks from unauthorized access, attacks, and damage. It involves a wide range of practices designed to safeguard data confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Effective internet security is crucial for individuals, businesses, and governments alike, as cyber threats continue to evolve in complexity and scale.
### Key Components of Internet Security
1. **Confidentiality**: Ensuring that information is accessible only to those authorized to access it.
2. **Integrity**: Protecting information from being altered or tampered with by unauthorized parties.
3. **Availability**: Ensuring that authorized users have reliable access to information and resources when needed.
## Common Internet Security Threats
Cyber threats are numerous and constantly evolving. Understanding these threats is the first step in protecting against them. Some of the most common internet security threats include:
### Malware
Malware, or malicious software, is designed to harm, exploit, or otherwise compromise a device, network, or service. Common types of malware include:
- **Viruses**: Programs that attach themselves to legitimate software and replicate, spreading to other programs and files.
- **Worms**: Standalone malware that replicates itself to spread to other computers.
- **Trojan Horses**: Malicious software disguised as legitimate software.
- **Ransomware**: Malware that encrypts a user's files and demands a ransom for the decryption key.
- **Spyware**: Software that secretly monitors and collects user information.
### Phishing
Phishing is a social engineering attack that aims to steal sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details. Attackers often masquerade as trusted entities in email or other communication channels, tricking victims into providing their information.
### Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) Attacks
MitM attacks occur when an attacker intercepts and potentially alters communication between two parties without their knowledge. This can lead to the unauthorized acquisition of sensitive information.
### Denial-of-Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) Attacks

1. Joomla! User Group Toronto
Let's look at the Free Hosting
that you can get at
Joomla.com
Presented by Douglas Pickett,
29 September 2015
2. Free? Hmmm...
Open Source Matters has arranged free, non-
timelimited hosting for Joomla! sites through
Joomla.com
– How do you get it
– What do you get
– What don't you get (well, free, after all)
– What can you do with it.
4. Seems pretty easy ...
● The only hard part is choosing a name that isn't
already in use.
● Remember that all of these will be
http://something.joomla.com
and the “something” has to be something not
already in use.
● And they want you to use only lower case for the
name when you register it (although you can
capitalize it however you want to access it).
9. Login to Dashboard
The first time
● Click on the link, connect to the dashboard
● Choose a template
● Either blank or with sample data
● Create the site
● Note that the administrator name is randomly generated,
not admin. It also appears that you need to access the
back end via the dashboard.
26. Templates – which one?
● You can only make limited changes to the
templates
● Try to find one that fits your colour scheme
● When you select the sample data, it gives you a
lot of hints on how to do the layouts like the
sample one, so choose something similar to
what you want to create and save time.
27. What don't I get?
We'll highlight a few of the compromises that
have been put in to this free service.
● You're limited in the total disk space your site
can use (200Meg)
● You can't have your own domain name
● And ...
40. What does all this mean?
You're in a bit of walled garden
● You can't really blow things up so that your site
won't work
● You can't add all your favourite extensions
● You won't be able to run your 100,000 item
eComm site
● You can have a reasonable basic Joomla! site
41. But I want more!
SiteGround is happy to take your
money
42. How to adapt a template
● Some of them allow you to make more
substantive changes than others
● Go to the template preview – it will help you
identify what content is in what module position
● Once you know what the positions are, you look
for the modules or articles.
● Copy, unpublish, adapt.
43.
44.
45.
46. Now we go hunting...
Hah, that's where they are!
48. Once you've found them ...
● Turn off what you don't what
● Change the title, change the content, make
copies and re-purpose what is useful to you.
● They give you an example to work from, no
need to figure out how to do things like they've
done.
49. Maybe put in our own images in the
Header position?
52. Firefox is simplest to find image info
● Hover over the image
● Right click, select Image Info
● It will tell you the pixel size directly (as well as
the directory relative to the root of your web site)
● These are 1250x319 (or 4 times wider than high)
● You can use simple tools (my favourite is
IrfanView) to crop an image to that ratio, and
then resize to the resolution you need.
53.
54. You'll want to match the size, or at
least the ratio of the image size
59. Don't forget to specify what pages
they are to appear on
● Only the buttons where you've filled in the info
will appear
● The values for some of these are not obvious
● Google “how to find my facebook id” (or G+ or
LinkedIn)
