To whom it may concern,
During the summer of 2015, the Washington Internships for Native Students (WINS) Program in
the School of Professional and Extended Studies at American University identified and placed 40
interns within the U.S. Government. This count fo 40 interns was unprecedented in the history of
the program. This goal was largely attainable due to the diligence and effectiveness of Megan
Norton. I am Troy Lewis, former Assistant Director of the WINS program and I am writing to inform
your office that Megan Norton consistently performed work which lead to the ultimate success of
the program for 2015.
The WINS program offers American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian nations the
opportunity to develop leadership skills while living, studying and interning in Washington, DC.
During the time of Megan’s role the program faced several challenges, however, Megan
exemplified a high level of professionalism, acumen and strategic communication planning skills
that allowed for the program to reach a goal many thought to be unrealistic. Megan singlehandedly
reviewed all applications, assessed qualifications, maintained applicant/intern communication all
while undergoing coursework.
Communication is the most critical operation of an internship program. Megan developed real
time communication systems and update logs for the intern pool which created a seamless
process for interns to receive important information for applications, onboarding, placement,
housing, course selection and registration. In short, without the support of Megan and her
willingness to always go above and beyond the call of duty many worthy students would not have
had the opportunity to receive, what we know to be, life-changing opportunities to intern with an
U.S. Government agency.
As Megan continues to navigate her career track and identifies working environments conducive
to her professional goals, I am certain that she will continue to sharpen her skills while investing
in the organization to the best of her ability. It is with high regard that I recommend Megan Norton
for your current vacancy and strongly encourage your office to consider her as a top choice
particularly if your office is in need of an employee that will exceed expectations with
professionalism and great decision making.
I am available should your require additional insight.
Regards,
Troy D. Lewis, II
