Introduction
• Indian healthcare industry expected to become a
US$280 billion industry by 2020.
• Health-IT market in India is expected to reach $1.45
billion in 2018 from the present $381.3 million.

• 1980 TCS won tender to computerize whole AIIMS,
worth several crore, installed "state of art hardware &
software" but implementation got failed.
• “Patient Care System” software was developed by TCS
& installed in AIIMS in1990.
• AIIMS realized in 1996 that Patient Care System had not
been used successfully due to bottlenecks. It was
decided that there should be no extension of the annual
maintenance contract.

EMR in India
• In India it all started somewhere around 2008 when a handful of
technology savvy entrepreneurs invested in patient portal/EMR
software to enhance connectivity & communication between patients
& doctor.
• There are 35 domestic EMR vendors in India with multiple product
portfolios.
• In the committee constituted by an order of “mohfw.gov” by august
2013, various recommendation regarding EMR standards were
presented & I have tabulated some of the key recommendation.

Conclusion
• Among the challenges responsible for slow penetration of
EMR in India are related to all technical challenges (most
commonly faced challenges); organizational challenges;
psychological challenges; financial challenges; legal
challenges; individual challenges.
• There is very low penetration of HIT in India as compared to
developed countries like the US.

Recommendation
• Instead of mandating the use of EMR, the physician
perception about EMR should be understood first.
This will allow for the development of target
education to demonstrate the advantage of EMRs &
to further improve their perception.
