The hero of the epic is Odysseus, the most intelligent of the Greek chieftains. After the Trojan War, Odysseus endured many dangers and temptations over ten years before finally returning home to Ithaca. Upon his return, he finds his wife Penelope beset by suitors who want to marry her and take over Odysseus's kingdom. Disguised as a beggar, with the help of his son Telemachus, Odysseus slays all the suitors and is reunited with his faithful wife Penelope.
