Pelvic floor dysfunction includes genital prolapse and stress incontinence. Genital prolapse is the descent of pelvic organs through the pelvic floor. It has many causes including weakness of pelvic tissues from childbirth trauma, congenital defects, or menopause. Stress incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine during activities that increase abdominal pressure like coughing or laughing. Treatment includes prophylactic exercises during pregnancy, palliative measures like pessaries, and physical therapy to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles through techniques like biofeedback, Kegel exercises, and stopping the urine stream. Surgery is also an option for more severe cases.
