2. Groundnut / Peanut Crops in 2020 [India]
• It is estimated that required consumption demand of groundnut by the end by 2020 will be
14million tones in India.
• Whereas todays production of our country is 8.4million tones.
• Therefore to meet the extra required demand of 5.8million tones we have to increase
production 2.2% per year.
• At present increase in area is not possible therefore only one option left is to increase the
productivity per unit area.
• Groundnut grown in Kharif season has very little scope to go for yield increase because most
of this is from rainfed cultivation.
3. To achieve target in peanut production.
• To increase the per hectare productivity of groundnut.
• There is stability in the production of Rabi & Summer season groundnut and the productivity of
Rabi groundnut is more than Kharif groundnut therefore the area under Rabi groundnut should
be increased.
• The areas where groundnut is not grown traditionally like rice based low moistured lands of
north east hills, there groundnut can be grown after the rice harvest.
• By cultivation of groundnut as intercrop between the widely spaced crops.
4. Option to increase the area under cultivation in India
• By cultivating groundnut in rice based low moistured up lands of eastern and north eastern
hills.
• In this system groundnut is cultivated either in residual moisture or with little irrigation in rice
plots after the harvest of rice.
• There is vast scope of cultivating groundnut in the empty fields of rice in eastern and north
eastern hills of India.
• In these areas groundnut is sown in between october and february as water level decreases in
the rivers as soon as rice is harvested.
• In this system short duration varieties (80-85 days) of groundnut which have fresh dormancy
can be grown.
5. By cultivating sprint season groundnut
• To increase the area under groundnut cultivation can be taken in spring season.
• In this method groundnut can be grown after the harvest of early potato and mustard.
• Groundnut can be sown from first fortnight of January till 2nd fortnight of febraury in Uttar
Pradesh.
• In Hariyana and Punjab the varieties which can tolerate the heat can be sown after the wheat
harvest.
6. By growing in summers in Indira Gandhi Canal Cmd area.
• In this area Bikaner and Jaisalmer dist. Of Rajasthan are covered. The total area of 2-3lakh
ha. Can be covered under ground nut cultivation.
• This area is suitable for H.P.S varities.
• The temp goes up till 550C in this reagion and because of air evaporation crop has to be there
in fields for longer duration with near frequent irrigation.
• If in these conditions the varities which can with stand cold are sown in the month of February
then their vegative growth will be fast and they will be strong enough to tolerate the heat in
later stages.
7. By growing Groundnut as intercrop
• Groundnut can be grown sucessfully in between the fruit crops and widely spaced perrinial
crops.
• Groundnut can be grown profitably in between the rows of Red gram, castor, cotton etc.
• Where the groundnut is irrigated by border irrigation the fodder crop like sorghum, Pearl millet
and maize can be grown in borders which increases the net income of the plot.
8. By increasing the use of groundnut in food-production
• Other than groundnut oil the groundnut based products like Groundnut butter, baby food etc.
can be promoted.
• If the aflatoxin level of these products can be kept under control then there is a great
possibility of exporting these products.
9. By increasing the use of groundnut plant as fodder
• By growing the varieties of groundnut which remains green at the time of harvesting can be
used as green as well as dry fodder.
• Some wild spp. of groundnut like A.prosthata A.margineta, A.haganbaka, A.glabata which
grows rapidly can be grown in fallow land between the fruit crops of orchards.
10. By growing successfully in sandy and loam soils
• These varieties can be grown successfully in sandy and loam soils.
• In areas where rain is normal and well distributed production of H.P is very good.
• H.P.S varieties like somnath, TKG19A, B-95, BAV-13, TG-22 etc shoud be cultivated.
• To keep the afalatoxin level controlled these should be grown by scientific method.
• To ensure the export and market of these there should be perfect relation between producer,
business man and exporter.
