Stratus clouds form low, smooth sheets in the sky and can bring rain, snow or fair weather. Cumulus clouds appear puffy with flat bases, sometimes towering high with fair weather or thunderstorms. Cirrus clouds are the highest and thinnest made of ice crystals, usually indicating fair weather but sometimes foreshadowing storms.
