Septic arthritis is an infection of the joint that causes pain, swelling, and reduced mobility. It occurs when bacteria or other germs enter a joint, usually from the bloodstream. Left untreated, it can cause permanent joint damage so prompt treatment with antibiotics and drainage of the joint is needed.
