This document presents research on factors influencing strategic management accounting system design in the service industry, specifically hotels. The study aims to investigate the application of strategic management accounting techniques in hotels, examine their relationship with contextual factors, and relate usage to historical hotel performance. A survey was conducted of 106 Greek hotels, measuring variables like environmental uncertainty, organizational structure, information systems quality, and life cycle stage. The results were analyzed using partial least squares modeling to test hypotheses about how these factors relate to strategic management accounting usage.
Six Sigma and the application perspectives of various industries: A bibliomet...IJAEMSJORNAL
In recent years, quality in companies has become a priority issue which, according to the organization, is a matter of very little investment and dedication in the production lines, so a quality tool can be the solution to this problem. The present research work is to demonstrate the state of the art on Six Sigma and the perspectives in several industries through a bibliometric analysis using Bibliometrix. A database from Scopus is used, which includes a total of 857 articles in a time span from 2016 to 2020. From the results obtained, some characteristics of the articles are illustrated and analyzed (keywords, main authors, country of origin, main journals, scientific production and collaborative networks). The results obtained from the analysis show the existence of an exponential increase trend on Six sigma, being the basis for improving the quality of the processes.
The most powerful typhoon of the 2013 season approached the northern Philippines and southern Taiwan on Friday (Sept. 20) with wind reaching 300 kph (184 mph) and torrential rain. The death toll now stands at 475 and is expected to increase dramatically in the days to come. Usagi has a diameter of 1,100 kilometers (660 miles), with outer rain bands extending across the main northern Philippine island of Luzon and southern Taiwan. Forecasters predict 24-hour rainfall accumulation of 500 millimeters (nearly 20 inches) near its center. Presentation courtesy of Dr Walter Hays, Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction
This poem describes colorful gifts the author received from her aunts, including peacock blue bangles and an apple-green sari. However, the gifts symbolize her Pakistani culture that she feels rejected from and unable to fully embrace or understand. While the gifts are beautiful like stained glass, she cannot see completely through them, just as she cannot fully see her mixed cultural identity.

The document outlines an 8-step hiring process and a 5-step process for creating an optimal team environment. The hiring process advises being clear about candidate qualifications, using phone screens to evaluate fit, and only interviewing the most qualified applicants. The team environment steps include setting clear expectations, involving the team in goal-setting, aligning individual plans to strategic goals, recognizing contributions, and ensuring employees understand business factors and have urgency to achieve stretch goals.
The Carlton Complex Fire, a massive, lightning-caused wildfire in Washington State, is still out of control, burning houses, and forcing residents of Washington state and Canada to evacuate. The current situation: Gov. Jay Inslee said about 50 fires were burning in Washington, which has been wracked by hot, dry weather, gusting winds and lightning. Some 2,000 firefighters were working in the eastern part of the state, with about a dozen helicopters from the Department of Natural Resources and the National Guard.
India may have dodged a bullet as Cyclone Phalin strikes Bay of Bengal 12 October 2013. Cyclone Phalin is one of the most powerful cyclones in history, yet the death toll reported as of 14 October only 21. 900,000 residents were evacuated to shelters in schools and government offices. Authorities also moved food and medicine close to affected areas before the storm. Those preparations now are credited with the huge reduction in casualties compared with 1999's Cyclone Orissa, which killed 10,000 and caused more than $2 billion in damage. The comparatively low mortality this time may be result of effective strategic planning and collaboration (i.e., working together on a common goal) for becoming cyclone disaster resilient

We continue to operate with a flawed premise: knowledge from earthquake disasters, which occur annually on a global scale, is enough to make any nation susceptible to earthquakes adopt and implement policies that will facilitate its own disaster resilience. Fact: it usually takes multiple earthquake disasters before a stricken nation will adopt and implement policies that move it towards earthquake disaster resilience. Fact: most unaffected nations don’t even try to learn anything new from another nation’s earthquake disasters and certainly don’t consider them to be a basis for changing existing policies. Pillars of earthquake disaster resilience: preparedness
adoption and implementation of a modern earthquake engineering building code; realistic earthquake disaster scenarios; timely emergency response (including emergency medical services); cost-effective reconstruction & recovery. WHAT IS HAPPENING? AIRLINES ON RED ALERT AFTER VOLCANIC ERUPTION IN ICELAND. After a week of seismic activity rattled the uninhabited area 200 miles (320 kilometers) east of the capital of Reykjavik with thou-sands of earthquakes, Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano began erupting Saturday (Aug. 23rd) under the country's largest glacier. An Iceland volcanologist said it was not clear when, or if, the eruption would melt through the ice — which is between 100 and 400 meters (330 feet and 1,300 feet) thick — and send steam and ash into the air. On Saturday, Icelandic authorities declared a no-fly zone of 100 nautical miles by 140 nautical miles around the eruption, but did not shut the country's airspace. An eruption at the Katla volcano could be disastrous, both for Iceland and other nations. Presentation courtesy of Dr. Walter Hays, Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction
Violent tornadoes ripped through the Midwest on Sunday, causing significant damage in several communities. But isn't tornado season supposed to be in the spring and summer? Turns out tornadoes are rare in November, but not unheard of. The worst November tornado event in U.S. history was in 2002. On Nov. 10-11 of that year, a major outbreak of severe weather and tornadoes occurred across the Tennessee and Ohio Valley regions, producing damage in 13 states. A total of 75 tornadoes touched down on Nov. 10, killing at least 36 people.

Understanding the Benefits and Limitations of Six Sigma
Methodology
Nilesh V Fursule, Dr. Satish V Bansod, Swati N. Fursule
Abstract- Six Sigma is both a philosophy and a methodology
that improves quality by analyzing data with statistics to find the
root cause of quality problems and to implement controls.
Statistically, Six Sigma refers to a process in which the range
between the mean of a process quality measurement and the
nearest specification limit is at least six times the standard
deviation of the process.
Despite the pervasiveness of Six Sigma program
implementations, there is increasing concern about
implementation failures. One reason many Six Sigma programs
fail is because an implementation model on how to effectively
guide the implementation of these programs is lacking. While Six
Sigma is increasingly implemented in industry, little academic
research has been done on Six Sigma and its influence on quality
management theory and application. There is a criticism that Six
Sigma simply puts traditional quality management practices in a
new package. To investigate this issue and the role of Six Sigma
in quality management, this study reviewed both the traditional
quality management and Six Sigma literatures. Quality
professionals are aware that the six-sigma methodology employs
existing, well-known tools developed in quality sciences and are
based on the works of Deming, Juran, Ishikawa, Taguchi, and
others. Nevertheless six sigma, a Motorola innovation, has been a
positive force. A good presentation – black belts and green belts
honoring six-sigma experts – can make statistical process
improvement, and the systematic six-sigma methodology taste
good, and do good work.

I. INTRODUCTION
ix Sigma is both a philosophy and a methodology that
improves quality by analyzing data with statistics to find the
root cause of quality problems and to implement controls.
Statistically, Six Sigma refers to a process in which the range
between the mean of a process quality measurement and the
nearest specification limit is at least six times the standard
deviation of the process. The statistical objectives of Six Sigma
are to centre the process on the target and reduce process
variation. A Six Sigma process will approach 'zero defects' with
only 3.4 defects per million opportunities (DPMO) for a defect to
occur. In comparison, the goal of many quality initiatives
throughout the 1980s and early 90s was to obtain a process
capability index (Cpk) of at least 1.0, which roughly translates to
3 Sigma. However, this level of quality still produces a defect
rate of 66,810 DPMO. Six Sigma differs from other quality
programmes in its 'top-down' driv.
Reviewing Methodology of research Papersneerajshahi
The document discusses five research papers on corporate sustainability and human resource management. It summarizes the methodology used in each paper. The papers primarily used quantitative research methods like surveys, secondary data collection, and statistical analysis. They collected data from sources like corporate reports, websites and questionnaires. Methods of analysis included literature reviews, hypothesis testing, and regression models. The document interprets the common methods and concludes there is still scope for future research to better define concepts and relationships regarding sustainability, stakeholders, and business goals.
The impact of the digital era on the implementation of lean six sigmaUduakLuke
This document discusses the impact of digital technologies on the implementation of Lean Six Sigma. It first reviews literature on Lean Six Sigma and how its critical success factors can vary by industry. The digital technology industry is growing rapidly and faces unique challenges. The document aims to understand hurdles to Lean Six Sigma implementation in digital emerging technology companies by identifying industry-specific critical success factors, potential modifications to the Lean Six Sigma methodology, and how data analytics capabilities can complement traditional Lean Six Sigma analytical tools. It presents results from case studies of digital technology companies that have implemented Lean Six Sigma through interviews.
This document presents a case study on applying Six Sigma methodology to streamline the financial reporting process within the finance department of a major defense contractor. The goal of the project, called Continuing Account Reconciliation Enhancement (CARE), was to standardize and document the process for establishing and maintaining costing and planning within the current financial management system. Applying Six Sigma's DMAIC framework, the team mapped the existing process, identified inefficiencies, standardized procedures, and achieved significant reductions in cycle time and cost per report produced. The results showed Six Sigma can successfully be applied beyond manufacturing to optimize business processes in other functions like finance.
This document discusses the application of Six Sigma methodology within the finance department of a major U.S. defense contractor. Specifically, it describes a case study of a Continuing Account Reconciliation Enhancement project undertaken by the finance department to streamline and standardize financial reporting processes. The Six Sigma implementation resulted in significantly reduced average cycle time and cost per unit of activity needed to produce required financial reports.
This presentation shows how discretionary investments in Corporate Responsibility lead to strategic and financial benefits for the businesses. This study reinforced the literature surrounding the stakeholder theory and the resource-based view of the firm in addressing the research objectives and its implicit hypotheses. At the same time, it also pushes forward the 'shared value' notion.
This document summarizes a study that conducted a gap analysis to assess Indian seafood exporting firms' readiness to implement total quality management (TQM). The study found the largest gaps were in the areas of using statistical process control tools (66.7% gap), benchmarking (65.6%), top management commitment (56.25%), and customer focus (48.1%). Top management was generally supportive of quality programs but lacked awareness of TQM tools and quality incentives for workers. Supplier quality management also showed a gap, though raw material quality was usually satisfactory. Few firms conducted customer satisfaction surveys. Overall the analysis revealed several areas that would need to be improved for firms to fully adopt a TQM system.
Application Of Six Sigma DMAIC Methodology In A Transactional EnvironmentCynthia King
This document summarizes a case study applying Six Sigma's DMAIC methodology to improve communication and information management (CIM) within an infrastructure support services company. The study found CIM effectiveness was below industry average, resulting in inefficient management reporting. Data management and communication systems were identified as contributing factors. The paper demonstrates how Six Sigma was used to streamline CIM processes and improve accuracy and timeliness of reporting within the transactional environment.

A REVIEW OF LITERATURE IN MANAGEMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (MCS), BUSINESS STRATEGY,...Christine Maffla
This document reviews 10 articles on the relationship between management control systems (MCS), business strategy, and firm performance. Most articles studied manufacturing industries in Australia and Canada, with managers and top management as the most common key informants. The majority used quantitative methods. Findings showed MCS can support both cost leadership and differentiation strategies, though different MCS may be needed for each. Interactive MCS were found to support differentiation strategies and influence innovation and financial performance. Overall the literature revealed linkages between MCS, strategy, and performance.
This document discusses critical success factors for implementing total quality management. It analyzes 14 TQM frameworks and identifies common critical success factors across the frameworks. Through frequency analysis of the frameworks, it determines that the top critical success factors are: top management commitment, quality culture, strategic quality management, design quality management, process management, supplier quality management, education and training, empowerment and involvement, information and analysis, and customer satisfaction. The document establishes these 10 factors as critical for successful TQM implementation based on their prevalence across the frameworks analyzed.

University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore, Pakistan
The Six Sigma programme has recently gained popularity throughout the world. There
are a number of claims of its successes as well as failures. Successful claims are mostly
supported in the literature with the popular case studies of Motorola, GE, and some
other American companies. Based on the popularity of these success stories, many
companies started implementation of this programme. Some did it successfully while
many failed to achieve the desired results. This paper explores and analyses the
critical success and failure factors of implementing Six Sigma in organisations based
on lessons drawn from real life practices and case studies, as well as available
literature. The paper also draws useful conclusions and recommendations for
strategists, CEO’s and quality managers on how to effectively implement Six Sigma.
Keywords: Six Sigma implementation; Six Sigma metric; Six Sigma structure; Six
Sigma methodology; total quality management (TQM); ISO 9000
Background
Total Quality Management (TQM) is a sub-discipline of management science which aims
to define, set, control and improve the effectiveness of an organisation within its con-
straints. It has been named and labelled by different nomenclatures in its evolution over
the last 60 years or so, such as quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), total
quality control (TQC), company-wide quality control (CWQC), TQM, or quality manage-
ment systems (QMS). Since then, a paradigm shift in the core concept has occurred in the
field of TQM by expanding the process of measurement, control and improvement from
the testing/inspection departments to all departments in all types of firms, which may
be manufacturing or service. Having implemented TQM, it means that the organisation
is essentially using the philosophy of standardisation, customer satisfaction and continual
improvement. For this purpose, this field uses many tools, methods, standards or pro-
grammes continuously being evolved by top class practicing companies, practitioners,
or academicians. Six Sigma is the latest entry in this field.
Introduction
Six Sigma is an improvement methodology in the field of Total Quality Management
(TQM). It is defined as ‘a methodology for pursuing continuous improvement in customer
satisfaction and profit that goes beyond defect reduction and emphasizes business process
improvement in general’ (Breyfogle III, 2003). It aims for an error free business environ-
ment (Pyzdek, 2003). It was originally introduced in the US by Motorola in the late 1980s

Merchants from high-risk industries face significant challenges due to their industry reputation, chargeback, and refund rates. These industries include sectors like gambling, adult entertainment, and CBD products, which often struggle to secure merchant accounts due to increased risks of chargebacks and fraud.
To overcome these difficulties, it is necessary to improve credit scores, reduce chargeback rates, and provide detailed business information to high-risk merchant account providers to enhance credibility.
Regarding security, implementing robust security measures such as secure payment gateways, two-factor authentication, and fraud detection software that utilizes machine learning systems is crucial.

4. Research Objectives
1. Investigate the application of strategic management accounting
techniques in a service context
2. Provide a more unified knowledge and understanding of SMA and
their context by extending contingency relationships established in
manufacturing firms to profit seeking service firms
3. Examine the relation between SMA usage and historical
performance in services
4Dr Odysseas Pavlatos
6. Literature review and conceptual
framework (1)
Little or no agreement about what constitutes SMA (Roslender and Hart,
2003)
Guilding et al. (2000) provided an original distillation of SMA techniques as
well as criteria for viewing a particular accounting technique as “strategic
16 SMA techniques have been identified by Cadez and Guilding, (2008).
These techniques have been classified into five broad categories:
◦ costing
◦ planning, control and performance measurement
◦ decision-making
◦ competitor focused accounting
◦ customer accounting
6Dr Odysseas Pavlatos
10. Conceptual framework
Selection of the independent variables
Management Accounting literature reports that there are a lot of contingent
factors affect MAS and SMA (e.g. Chenhall, 2003; Cadez and Guilding, 2008):
◦ Contingent factors, such as PEU and Structure have been identified in prior studies as
influencing the design of MAS in hotels (McManus, 2012; Pavlatos, 2010; Pavlatos,
2011; Sharma, 2002)
◦ Pavlatos and Paggios (2009) found that there is a relationship between Quality of IS
information and Cost system design in hotels
◦ Organizational life cycle stage, have been identified in prior studies as influencing the
MAS design in service organizations (Auzer & Langfield-Smith, 2005; Brignall, 1997;
1991; Moores and Yuen, 2001)
◦ Empirical evidence supports the notion that organizations which experience
performance downturns are more likely to take risks and to adopt innovations (see
Naranjo-Gil et al., 2009 for a review)
10Dr Odysseas Pavlatos
11. Conceptual framework
Selection of control variables and industry specific factors
Organizational Strategyand Size have been identified in prior studies as
influencing SMA usage (Cadez and Guilding, 2008)
Management status, Age of the organization, Category, and Type of

15. Research Methodology
Variables measurement (1)
“Structure” was measured by the Gordon and Narayanan (1984), six-item, seven point,
Likert-scaled, fully-anchored instrument. Respondents were asked to strongly disagree
or strongly agree with six statements regarding that the authority has been
completely delegated to appropriate managers or employees to make decisions
“Perceived environmental uncertainty” was measured by the Gordon and Narayanan
(1984), seven point, Likert-scaled, fully-anchored instrument. It was slightly adapted to
be understandable in the hotel context. Respondents were asked to strongly disagree
or strongly agree with five statements regarding the perceived environmental
uncertainty
15Dr Odysseas Pavlatos
16. Research Methodology
Variables measurement (2)
“Quality of IS information” was measured by the Teng et al. (1995) five-item, seven
point, Likert-scaled, and used by Dunk (2004). Respondents were asked to rate their
information systems on a scale anchored by (1) ‘very low’ and (7) ‘very high’, in terms
of its accuracy, precision, reliability, completeness and relevancy
“Organizational life cycle stage” was based on the Kazanjian and Drazin (1990) self
categorization measure; this instrument was used by Auzair and Langfield-Smith
(2005). Three stages of organizational life cycle were measured: formation, growth
and mature stages.
◦ Thus, only two stages were analyzed – growth (38 firms) and maturity (68 firms) stages
16Dr Odysseas Pavlatos
17. Research Methodology
Variables measurement (3)
“SMA Usage” was measured drawingon the scale by Cadez and Guilding(2008)
◦ It was slightly adapted to be understandable in the hotel context based on
information from the interviews with six managers who specialize in
management accountingin hotels
◦ It comprises of an eleven-item seven-point Likert-scaled instrument anchored
by (1) ‘to no extent’to (7) ‘to a great extent’
◦ These techniques have been classified into five broad categories according to
Cadez and Guilding (2008)
17Dr Odysseas Pavlatos

19. Research Methodology
Variables measurement (4)
◦ “ Historical Performance”: We acquired operational performance data for the three years before
the survey administration from the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) and Hellenic
Chamber of Hotels Dimensions:
Hence, we decided to rely on five performance indicators, according to Kim et. al., (2013):
1. Average room rate (ARR);
2. Revenue per available room, (RevPAR);
3. Total revenue per available room (TrevPAR);
4. Restaurant F&B revenue per occupied room
5. Banquet F&B revenue per occupied room
19Dr Odysseas Pavlatos
21. Research Methodology
Variables measurement (5)
◦ “Organizational strategy” is measured with a single item seven-point Likert-scaled
adopted from Govindarajan (1988) ranging from cost leadership to product
differentiation
◦ “Size” was measured using the number of beds adopted by Tavitiyamanet. al (2012)
◦ “Age of the organization” was measured by Kallunki and Silvola (2008) (age of the hotel
in years since it was found)
◦ “Category of hotel” (stars), “Management status” (membership in chains, private), and
“Type of hotel” (city hotel, resort) were measured as categorical variables adopted by
Pavlatos and Paggios (2009)
