3. This is administration of nutritional feeds
through nasal gastric tube
Objectives
To provide nutrition to patients who cannot
swallow.
Indication
Patients with esophageal obstruction
Post surgery patients
Patients with decreased level of consciousness
Patients with extra caloric needs
4. Equipment
Liquid food, feeding syringe 20 or 50cc
Warm water, measuring cup, litmus
paper
Gloves, kidney dish, screen
Towel to cover patient chest
Receiver.
5. Patient preparation
Explain the procedure to patient.
Screen the bed for privacy
Place patient in sitting position
Equipment preparation
Check that the tube is in place.
Verify feed by checking physician’s order
Check the food if warm.
Keep the tube clamped when not in use.
6. Procedure
1. Wash hands
2. Remove the clamps
3. Draw 30mls of warm water in a syringe
and inject into the tube slowly to ensure
patency
4. Re-clamp the tube by pinching with the
non dominant hand.
5. Draw the feed in the syringe and slowly
push it down.
7. 6. Raising the syringe will increase the
flow rate.
7. Observe the feed, do not allow it to
empty to prevent air entry.
8. Once the feed is finished clamp the
tube
9. Draw 30mls of warm water unclamp
the tube and flush to rinse the tube.
And prevent clogging.
8. 10. Re clamp the tube and leave the
patient in a comfortable position
11. Discard gloves and wash hands.
After procedure
Record amount of feed taken.
Decontaminate feeding syringe in 0.5%
chlorine wash in soapy water and
rinse.
