Pasturage land refers to certain land assigned for grazing cattle belonging to local villages. The right of grazing on pasturage lands extends only to cattle of the village it belongs to or has been assigned to, and is regulated by rules prescribed by the local collector with state government approval. The collector's decision is conclusive in any disputes over grazing rights. Pastures and grazing lands make up around 4% of India's total land area, mainly in hilly regions, though many have been lost to human settlement. Himachal Pradesh has the most land designated as pastures and grazing lands.
