So where are we now? The TDM landscape
This document discusses the current landscape of text and data mining (TDM) in Europe. Co-creating data value chains with the public sector
1. The public sector cannot create data value chains alone and needs to co-create them with the private sector. Co-creation can augment data quality, combine public and private sector data, and enable new AI services and business models.
2. Case studies of data sharing initiatives showed that without standardization of data models, APIs, and unified access, it is difficult to build applications that can utilize different data sources.
3. Data sharing spaces need to evolve into data ecosystems and platforms with interoperability, common data models, value-added services, and data governance frameworks to fully realize the potential of co-creating data value chains between the public and private sectors.
Opportunities in Data
FutureEverything runs year-round projects looking at the impact of technology and data on society. Open data is changing the world as more data is made publicly available by governments and organizations. Manchester aims to be on the forefront of 21st century "data cities" by making city data freely available to fuel innovation. Data intermediaries can help interpret underlying data and present it visually to help people understand and take action. Various opportunities exist for businesses to use open data to gain insights and make better decisions.

- Europeana is a digital library that provides single access to European cultural heritage from over 1500 institutions, containing over 19 million items. It uses open licenses like CC-BY-NC and CC0 to make this content freely available.
- Open licensing benefits users, cultural institutions, and politicians by improving access, visibility, education, and economic growth. However, some institutions fear loss of control, income, reputation, and branding.
- Europeana conducted workshops and consultations on the risks and rewards of open licensing. Based on this, it will transition metadata to CC0 to allow maximum reuse while institutions can still commercially exploit their own metadata. This will enrich data and better connect cultural heritage online.

Bristol is Open Introduction
Bristol aims to become the world's first open programmable city through a city-wide digital infrastructure project called Bristol Is Open. The project will create an open software defined network, Internet of Things platform, and means of collecting and analyzing big data to enable mass co-creation of smart city applications. This will allow Bristol to better manage challenges associated with major trends like rapid urbanization, new technologies, demands for sustainable cities, and empowered citizens. Bristol Is Open has received £75 million in funding and will roll out its digital network starting in late 2015, engaging a wide range of partners from academia, businesses, technology companies and communities.
