This document discusses lighting considerations for parking structures. It evaluates lighting and economic factors in two sections. For lighting, it poses three questions: what is the task being lit, what are the required light levels, and what environmental factors affect the space? The task is ensuring safety and security through proper light levels as defined by industry standards. Light source selection must account for factors like temperature and vibration. Economically, the total cost of ownership over the system life includes energy efficiency through luminaire and control choices, as well as operational efficiency through maintenance costs.
The document discusses the challenges and opportunities for reducing costs in photovoltaic (PV) technology. It notes that for PV to have a major global impact, costs must be reduced to $0.05-0.10 per kWh generated. This requires further improving existing silicon and thin-film cell technologies as well as developing novel low-cost and high-efficiency concepts. Europe's approach to PV research and development aims to establish a diverse portfolio of technologies to overcome barriers between laboratory innovations and commercial markets. Significant cost reductions and efficiency gains will be needed for PV to become a major global energy source.

The document discusses the future of the photovoltaic market. It notes that in 2009, all renewable technologies grew as expected, with solar growing 7% to reach around 1.230 GW of total installed capacity. It outlines Enel Green Power's activities across various renewable technologies and countries. It then examines projections for continued cost reductions and growth in solar capacity in Europe and Italy towards grid parity in the coming years, as well as the increasing importance of smart grids in enabling distributed solar generation.
The document discusses energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives involving living labs. It describes the SAVE ENERGY living lab network project, which aims to reduce energy consumption through smart ICT technologies, serious games, and influencing consumer behavior. It outlines the methodology used by several European living labs involved in pilots to test energy monitoring and reduction solutions. The document also discusses plans for large commercial pilots, future research initiatives, the ENoLL energy domain, and potential for collaboration between European and Brazilian living labs on energy efficiency.
This case study describes a UK serviced office provider that owns and operates 80 office buildings. They employ dedicated customer service teams to manage each building. The company is replacing fluorescent light tubes used for outdoor building signage with SOLARA induction lamps. This will reduce required maintenance from every 18 months to once every 48 months, saving on maintenance costs. Installing SOLARA lamps will help the company reduce maintenance expenses and improve customer satisfaction by minimizing disruptions from frequent light replacements.

The Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Wales installed 300 LED light fixtures to illuminate its parking facilities and access roads. This is expected to save over £34,000 per year in energy and maintenance costs, resulting in a payback period of less than 3 years. The LED lights also reduce the hospital's carbon emissions by 100 tons annually and decrease the need for access vehicles to replace faulty lamps. The LED lights provide more even light distribution and visibility compared to the high pressure sodium and metal halide lamps previously used.

As sustainability and energy efficiency requirements continue in relevance to lighting installations the question of being able to assign an efficiency rating to public lighting installations (A through to G) requires consideration.
This paper looks at how the application of an energy efficiency rating can be considered for road lighting and will reference work undertaken in Spain, the Netherlands, and Australia as well as within the EU under their Directives and good practice guidance. It also considers the requirements for measuring the energy performance of road lighting installations as laid out in the draft Standard prEN13201-5:2013, Performance requirements.
Talk by Allan Howard, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff
First Solar has evolved its approach to modeling and predicting operation and maintenance (O&M) costs for solar power plants. Originally, O&M costs were estimated using an Excel model with limited failure rate data and assumptions. First Solar now uses reliability block diagram modeling along with field failure data to predict component-level and system-level availability and costs more accurately. This allows optimization of system designs to maximize energy production and minimize total cost of ownership, which is increasingly important as the levelized cost of energy is the primary metric used to evaluate solar projects. First Solar aims to further improve cost predictions by working to standardize reliability data reporting across suppliers.
Outsourced Innovation Case Study-Bettendorf, Iowaadambcarney
The city of Bettendorf collaborated with MidAmerican Energy to install a demonstration of 32 Philips Lumec LED streetlights replacing 32 high-pressure sodium fixtures. This was done to evaluate the energy savings, light quality, and cost-effectiveness of LEDs. Preliminary results found a projected 49% annual energy savings from the LEDs. However, payback was estimated at over 20 years for a full retrofit due to the high upfront cost of the LEDs. Ongoing monitoring is needed to verify the LEDs meet lighting standards long-term.
The Lighting industry has been through a revolution in the last few years with LED technology taking over from HID lamp sources and although better understood now than they were five years ago, we have seen a general uncertainty arise around a number of topics. In a reaction to this lack of understanding we now witness, as a suggested part of tender submissions, questions being asked that were never asked of HID solutions, these were posed when LED street lighting technology was developing. For example, whether the colour shift was 3, 4 or 5 macadam ellipses was perhaps pertinent a few years ago in relation to how the LEDs would perform, yet the industry was never to bothered when Son lamps changed their colour appearance and colour rendering properties within their relatively short life. With the maturing LED technology are they really still appropriate to be asked and what should the buyer really be asking instead?
This talk will look to explore these areas and clarify in simple terms the reality. Topics covered will include maintenance factors, the use of constant light output, control of glare and explore the use of drivers in the lanterns – basically the weakest link.
It will finally look at areas of research required to further our confidence in using the new technology and the wider lighting research being carried out by the CIE.
