Five monkeys were placed in a cage with a ladder containing bananas. Whenever a monkey climbed the ladder, the other monkeys were sprayed with cold water. Over time, the monkeys began beating up any monkey that tried to climb the ladder to avoid being sprayed, even after researchers replaced the monkeys one by one without using the cold water punishment. The experiment showed how traditions and paradigms can form through learned behavior without understanding the original reasoning.
