Papua New Guinea has over 1000 different ethnic groups, with 96% of the population being Christian. Over 800 distinct languages are spoken across the islands. The population is divided between the Papuans, who make up four-fifths, and the Austronesians, who are one-fifth. Each village has its own unique culture. There is a history of endless conflicts between proud warriors, such as the fearsome Omo Bugamo tribe known as the "Skeletons". Times of peace allow for colorful local rituals, the largest being the Mount Hagen festival.
