The Aksum civilization developed in Ethiopia around AD 100 and became a powerful trading empire connected to Arabia, India, and the African coast. This grouping of different ethnic groups within political boundaries has contributed to ongoing conflicts in the region such as the 1994 Rwandan genocide which resulted in the deaths of over 1 million Tutsi and Hutu people in just 3 months.

Nelson Mandela Thimbles

Kenya is a country located in East Africa with a population of over 41 million people. It has over 70 ethnic groups, with the three largest being the Kikuyu, Luo, and Luhya tribes. Each tribe has its own distinct language and culture. The Kikuyu are the largest group and live in central Kenya growing crops like tea and coffee. The Luhya are known for their enthusiasm for sports like rugby and soccer. The Maasai tribe maintains traditional nomadic herding practices and are known for their distinctive beaded jewelry and clothing styles that vary by age and gender.

Nelson Mandela Thimbles

Cultures around the world: Kenya presentation
Kenya is a country located in East Africa with a population of over 41 million people. It has over 70 ethnic groups, with the three largest being the Kikuyu, Luo, and Luhya tribes. Each tribe has its own distinct language and culture. The Kikuyu are the largest group and live in central Kenya growing crops like tea and coffee. The Luhya are known for their enthusiasm for sports like rugby and soccer. The Maasai tribe maintains traditional nomadic herding practices and are known for their distinctive beaded jewelry and clothing styles that vary by age and gender.
Southern- Central Africa
Southern-Central Africa has a variety of foods including meats like monkey, crocodile, and ostrich as well as dishes influenced by Europeans like braai barbecue. Families in the region tend to be large and communal, with women doing farm work, childcare, and cooking while men care for cattle. Children are taught through stories by both parents and the community. The ethnic identities of the region are diverse and include groups like the Bemba, Swahili, Shona, Ndebele, Zulu as well as influences from pilgrimages, kinship, nomadic lifestyles, Christianity, and more.

Clair presentation
This event is a South African themed dinner being held on Friday, May 4th from 6pm at Pembroke College Cafeteria.
