Paper One (Reading a Building or Public Space as a Text)
This assignment will address the basics of rhetoric (as discussed
in Chapters 1 and 2 of The Academic Writer) and draw interest
in part from additional assigned readings in our online database.
The Game Plan
1. Provide a working thesis statement and turn it in as Paper
One Prep via Blackboard by Monday, January 29 at 11:59 p.m.
2. Participate in the in-class peer editing session on Thursday,
February 1 (or coordinate an online review if you have to miss
class that day).
3. Using feedback from the prep assignment and your own
further reflection on your topic, complete and turn it your paper
as Paper One First Attemptvia Blackboard by Monday, February
5 at 11:59 p.m.
Essentials
1. You must have an introduction that establishes your voice,
engages your audience, and includes a thesis that identifies the
“author” of the building or public space, its audience, and its
purpose.
2. The thesis must be organized either around three features
leading to one overarching purpose, or three specific purposes
which you’ll support in the body paragraphs by identifying
features.
Example of a thesis identifying features –
The Dallas Cowboys are demonstrating, through AT&T
Stadium’s modern architecture, fan-friendly components, and
uses of technology, that the organization wants their fans to
have the greatest experience in the NFL.
Example of a thesis identifying purposes –
The Texas State Capitol uses a number of historical and new
features to give Texans a sense of state pride, to showcase how
open and efficient its government is, and to give out-of-state
visitors history and information about Texas.
3. The paper must have three body paragraphs, discussing each
of the features or each of the purposes you’ve identified in the
thesis.
4. The paper must include a conclusion paragraph that employs
one of the recommended strategies for conclusions we’ll discuss
in our Week 2 in-class presentation.
Format
The paper should contain five paragraphs (apx. 200-250 words
for each):
I. Intro Paragraph
II. Body Paragraph discussing Purpose/Function #1
III. Body Paragraph discussing Purpose/Function #2
IV. Body Paragraph discussing Purpose/Function #3
V. Conclusion Paragraph
The last page of your paper should be your Works Cited page.
Sources
You are not required to use sources for this paper, but should
you choose to do so, make sure to properly document them
using MLA formatting.
Grading
Paper One will be graded using the rubric, and papers that score
sufficient or exemplary in each category (reflected as a 2 or 3)
will be declared Portfolio Ready on the first attempt. Those
insufficient or failing in at least one category will need to
submit a B&A supplement assignment by Monday, February 19.
If a paper earns above 20 but does not earn at least a Sufficient
rating in all categories, it will be assigned a score of 19 to help
reflect that it has been declared Not Portfolio Ready.
A paper submitted without citations and a bibliography page
and/or not employing the required minimum number of sources
will automatically be deemed Not Portfolio Ready and assigned
a score of 9, regardless of performance.
Late Policy
Any paper turned in late (with the exception of a paper granted
a written, emailed exemption prior to the paper’s due date) will
be declared Not Portfolio Ready regardless of performance.
Consult the Rubric Checklist as a guide as you’re assessing
your paper prior to turning it in.

H-E-B SA39
Serving over 155 communities with 388 stores, H-E-B is the
“largest privately held
employer in Texas” (Arnold). This company has also reached
the highest number of employees
with over 90,000 partners. With such a competitive business
environment, H-E-B has continued
to keep their promise of low prices and fresh ingredients, which
helps keep them in business with
the changing social dynamics. More people are shopping from
home, and Amazon is able to
cater to their needs easily, therefore H-E-B has continued to
increase their competitive edge
while maintaining their bold promise. Being the largest private
employer in Texas, this company
is able to stay modernized and caught up with the recent
generations and cater to the people’s
needs while keeping their promises. As a specific grocery store
on 1604 and Blanco, H-E-B Plus
SA39 is demonstrating, through hospitality and customer
service, store layout, and having an
abundance of product variety, that this company is making
necessities for Texans’ everyday lives
easy to access all the while providing an enjoyable experience.
Hospitality and customer service is part of H-E-B’s bold
promise and there are many
different factors that come into play when a customer walks into
the store. When a customer
walks into a H-E-B, there is always a partner that is willing to
help guide that person in the right
direction. There are MICs, managers in charge, and their job is
to help customers all around the
store and make sure the store is clean. Along with MICs, more
partners are scheduled and
helping out customers during peak times so customers can get
what they need in a timely
manner. Also, every single partner is required to stop what he or
she is doing and help a
customer if needed. In fact, each partner has to watch a monthly
video that helps promote
continued customer service improvement. There is also a
business center in the store that is
designed to help everyone that has a question, comment, or
concern. This space is designed
specifically for customers and anything they might have a
problem with. This helps all customers
have an enjoyable experience because they never have to feel
like they are being ignored or
cannot approach a partner for help. Hospitality comes into place
because a majority of partners
know their customers by name and know something personal
about them. There are plenty of
customers that call the store and ask if a certain partner is
working that day and at what time.
Going to the grocery store can feel like a chore or sometimes a
punishment, but H-E-B SA39
does their best to make it easy, convenient, and an enjoyable
experience.
Having a well laid out store is very important when providing
customers with the best
experience and that is why H-E-B SA39 is extremely efficient
with their space. The store alone
is 86,000 square feet, but the architect made it so that a
customer is always in a department rather
than an open space. Although there is not a lot of open space,
there is the perfect amount of room
to navigate through the store with a shopping cart. Each isle has
enough room for two and half
large shopping carts to go through at a time. This is more than
enough space to allow customers
to be at ease when it is busy in the store and trying to get
through the aisles in a timely manner
without getting irritated. This helps the overall experience
because H-E-B realizes that customers
don’t want to be there for an extended period of time so having
room to maneuver quickly makes
that grocery trip much more enjoyable. H-E-B is also attacking
their competitors with a program
called Curbside, which gives all customers an option to not even
walk in the store and just have
partners shop for them. Because Curbside does not require
shoppers to enter the store, this
relieves some space for those shopping for their own groceries.
SA39’s ability to lay out their
store becomes a vital part of the overall experience and makes
more products easy to access.
There’s nothing better than having a variety of choices and
that’s why SA39 is giving
their customers plenty to choose from. In that store alone there
are over 100,000 different
products available. This gives the customer a sense of relief
because everything they need is in
one store including electronics, kitchen supplies, baby products,
cosmetics, clothes, etc. Along
with many different departments there are options within the
department. A customer can choose
from prime, natural, organic, or local meats and that’s for every
single cut of meat or any other
product in the store including fish market, grocery, and
produce. The amount of choices can be
overwhelming, but from a customer prospective, you’re always
going to get what you want. The
variety of options is possible through the shipments that come
every morning unlike other stores
that come every other day or even once a week and that’s how
SA39 keeps their products fresh
and always stocked. This simple idea of having an abundance of
variety keeps the customers
happy because they have access to everything they could
possibly need, especially in a Plus
store. Whether its department or a product, the customer will
always be happier with more
variety.
Ultimately, if H-E-B SA39 did not have these qualities
customers wouldn’t be shopping
with that specific store. Customer loyalty is what H-E-B is
striving for and with these
components of the store, that is what they are achieving. This
loyalty creates relationships and
overall helps connect to their customers at a very personal level.
With this, H-E-B is able to give
disaster relief efforts in times of need and overall get to know
their customers.

Hayward City Hall
I once lived in Hayward, California with my aunt and knows the
city well. Hayward City Hall is one of the public places where
organizations utilize by holding some of their important
occasions and especially workshops. Passing on the knowledge
and skills from experts to people seeking the knowledge is
essential. It makes sure that there is continuity in innovations
and the world does not stand still. Technology has taken the
world to a higher level, and the human thinking has been
transformed. Organizations have seen the need to have
platforms which are aimed at making sure that the potential
young innovators are equipped with knowledge that makes it
easier for them to thrive in the modern technological world. It’s
fortunate that I have visited Hayward City and deep understand
the working of it. Hayward City Hall stands as one of the
outstanding platforms that help organizations to pass their skills
and resources to potential innovators. The location of the hall
does not only attract a big number of interested parties, but it
also presents a central point where organizations and their
targeted audience meet. Hayward City Hall plays host to
organizations and their potential innovators, and it was by
Heller Manus and developed by Sarfi Regis Group. Hayward
City Hall gives organizations an opportunity to inspire potential
innovators, tap into the talents of potential innovators and get
the best innovators the country has.
Inspiration cannot be present unless there are people who know
better. It is through having engagements and open forums that
inspiration takes place. In this respect, Hayward City Hall plays
a significant role in providing a platform where engagements
and forums between organizations and potential innovators take
place (Owen et al. 760). Most of the young innovators have a
dream to work with some of the powerful and prominent
Companies, and therefore when organizations come out to
embrace them, their dreams are not shattered, and when the
same companies need their skills, they will be readily available
(Yoo et al. 13). At the same time, it is important to make sure
that there is a continuous flow of talents in the market and the
best way of doing so is by passing skills to the potential
employment candidates. A continuous flow of talents cannot be
guaranteed if there are no halls or places which host the
investors, organizations and the innovators. It is at this point
that the essential role of Hayward City Hall is recognized
because it brings together the people of Hayward by creating a
good platform to exchange ideas and skills. Considering that the
hall is run by the city, it is apparent that access for the public is
not limited thus ensuring that there is a place for every person.
An organization that only wants to get the finest employees
must have mechanisms in place which help in tapping in the
best talents. An organization cannot be the best if it only works
with the talents which have been rejected in the employment
sector. Hayward City management understands that having a
workshop venue of the kind will not only benefit the young
minds but will also go a long way in identifying some of the
best among the young innovators who will workshops. The City
Management has realized that one cannot be able to identify a
good talent without taking the young innovators for a test
(Chesbrough et al. 3). A good test brings in the potential
candidates, gives them the resources to use and observes how
they conduct themselves. Most of the young innovators are
hungry for making a change in the technology sector. With the
interest of the community at heart, the City Management has
made sure that organizations are encouraged to host their
workshop at the Hall and doing so attracts more investors in the
city as well as job seekers. With this in mind, at the end of the
workshop, the hosting company will have identified the finest
talents and will utilize their skills. At the same time, it is
important to note that some of the attendees leave with skills
which are enough to make them establish their businesses
(Geissdoerfer et al. 1218). Therefore, a significant impact is
made on the lives of the attendees.
Many companies intend to have workshops which do not only
give instructions and directions but also give the innovators an
opportunity to table their innovations. In this respect, it is
evident that the hall provides the best platform for the type of
event. Considering that Hayward City Hall is one of the halls
which are leading regarding resources and equipment, it is
apparent that there are many people who have an interest in
holding events at the hall. The City management has done the
math, and it is aware that many organizations will show up to
hold events at the hall. The City management also knows that
for the people who show up for the workshop, a big percentage
will recommend others to use the hall for future events
(Jagiełło-Kowalczyk, 4). With this, it is expected that the hall
might never run out of events and that goes a long way in
benefiting the communities around and the organization from
Hayward and other parts of the country. Hayward City Hall
provides a platform where organizations can identify some of
the best innovators and work hand in hand with them to better
their lives and also to grow the economy of the city.
It is no doubt that Hayward City management has identified the
best strategy to bring together the communities around and the
business community. The strategic location of the hall gives
many organizations an easy task to organize events and bring as
many people as possible. The hall has been playing host to
many workshops, and that is proof that it has the resources
which organizations find helpful during their workshops.
Though the hall benefits from the fees charged during the
workshops, it is apparent that organizations and the young
innovators are the major beneficiaries. Most of the
organizations lack better and spacious places to host their
workshops. Some workshops take place once in a year or once
in a few years, therefore, having an idle space at the premises of
an organization may not be a strategic move. In this respect, the
significance of Hayward City Hall comes in handy because it
creates a venue where the residents and organizations are
brought together to share ideas which benefit each party. Most
of the City halls are not expensive to hire, and the case is not
different from Hayward City Hall. It is for this reason the hall
is seen as a promoter of social cohesion and business growth.

Paper One (Reading a Building or Public Space as a Text)This.docx

  • 1. Paper One (Reading a Building or Public Space as a Text) This assignment will address the basics of rhetoric (as discussed in Chapters 1 and 2 of The Academic Writer) and draw interest in part from additional assigned readings in our online database. The Game Plan 1. Provide a working thesis statement and turn it in as Paper One Prep via Blackboard by Monday, January 29 at 11:59 p.m. 2. Participate in the in-class peer editing session on Thursday, February 1 (or coordinate an online review if you have to miss class that day). 3. Using feedback from the prep assignment and your own further reflection on your topic, complete and turn it your paper as Paper One First Attemptvia Blackboard by Monday, February 5 at 11:59 p.m. Essentials 1. You must have an introduction that establishes your voice, engages your audience, and includes a thesis that identifies the “author” of the building or public space, its audience, and its purpose. 2. The thesis must be organized either around three features leading to one overarching purpose, or three specific purposes which you’ll support in the body paragraphs by identifying features. Example of a thesis identifying features – The Dallas Cowboys are demonstrating, through AT&T Stadium’s modern architecture, fan-friendly components, and
  • 2. uses of technology, that the organization wants their fans to have the greatest experience in the NFL. Example of a thesis identifying purposes – The Texas State Capitol uses a number of historical and new features to give Texans a sense of state pride, to showcase how open and efficient its government is, and to give out-of-state visitors history and information about Texas. 3. The paper must have three body paragraphs, discussing each of the features or each of the purposes you’ve identified in the thesis. 4. The paper must include a conclusion paragraph that employs one of the recommended strategies for conclusions we’ll discuss in our Week 2 in-class presentation. Format The paper should contain five paragraphs (apx. 200-250 words for each): I. Intro Paragraph II. Body Paragraph discussing Purpose/Function #1 III. Body Paragraph discussing Purpose/Function #2 IV. Body Paragraph discussing Purpose/Function #3 V. Conclusion Paragraph The last page of your paper should be your Works Cited page. Sources You are not required to use sources for this paper, but should you choose to do so, make sure to properly document them using MLA formatting.
  • 3. Grading Paper One will be graded using the rubric, and papers that score sufficient or exemplary in each category (reflected as a 2 or 3) will be declared Portfolio Ready on the first attempt. Those insufficient or failing in at least one category will need to submit a B&A supplement assignment by Monday, February 19. If a paper earns above 20 but does not earn at least a Sufficient rating in all categories, it will be assigned a score of 19 to help reflect that it has been declared Not Portfolio Ready. A paper submitted without citations and a bibliography page and/or not employing the required minimum number of sources will automatically be deemed Not Portfolio Ready and assigned a score of 9, regardless of performance. Late Policy Any paper turned in late (with the exception of a paper granted a written, emailed exemption prior to the paper’s due date) will be declared Not Portfolio Ready regardless of performance. Consult the Rubric Checklist as a guide as you’re assessing your paper prior to turning it in. Student Name Here Professor Phil West
  • 4. WRC 1013-xxx (three digit section number goes here) (date goes here) H-E-B SA39 Serving over 155 communities with 388 stores, H-E-B is the “largest privately held employer in Texas” (Arnold). This company has also reached the highest number of employees with over 90,000 partners. With such a competitive business environment, H-E-B has continued to keep their promise of low prices and fresh ingredients, which helps keep them in business with the changing social dynamics. More people are shopping from home, and Amazon is able to cater to their needs easily, therefore H-E-B has continued to increase their competitive edge while maintaining their bold promise. Being the largest private employer in Texas, this company is able to stay modernized and caught up with the recent generations and cater to the people’s needs while keeping their promises. As a specific grocery store on 1604 and Blanco, H-E-B Plus SA39 is demonstrating, through hospitality and customer service, store layout, and having an
  • 5. abundance of product variety, that this company is making necessities for Texans’ everyday lives easy to access all the while providing an enjoyable experience. Hospitality and customer service is part of H-E-B’s bold promise and there are many different factors that come into play when a customer walks into the store. When a customer walks into a H-E-B, there is always a partner that is willing to help guide that person in the right direction. There are MICs, managers in charge, and their job is to help customers all around the store and make sure the store is clean. Along with MICs, more partners are scheduled and helping out customers during peak times so customers can get what they need in a timely manner. Also, every single partner is required to stop what he or she is doing and help a customer if needed. In fact, each partner has to watch a monthly video that helps promote continued customer service improvement. There is also a business center in the store that is designed to help everyone that has a question, comment, or concern. This space is designed
  • 6. specifically for customers and anything they might have a problem with. This helps all customers have an enjoyable experience because they never have to feel like they are being ignored or cannot approach a partner for help. Hospitality comes into place because a majority of partners know their customers by name and know something personal about them. There are plenty of customers that call the store and ask if a certain partner is working that day and at what time. Going to the grocery store can feel like a chore or sometimes a punishment, but H-E-B SA39 does their best to make it easy, convenient, and an enjoyable experience. Having a well laid out store is very important when providing customers with the best experience and that is why H-E-B SA39 is extremely efficient with their space. The store alone is 86,000 square feet, but the architect made it so that a customer is always in a department rather than an open space. Although there is not a lot of open space, there is the perfect amount of room to navigate through the store with a shopping cart. Each isle has enough room for two and half
  • 7. large shopping carts to go through at a time. This is more than enough space to allow customers to be at ease when it is busy in the store and trying to get through the aisles in a timely manner without getting irritated. This helps the overall experience because H-E-B realizes that customers don’t want to be there for an extended period of time so having room to maneuver quickly makes that grocery trip much more enjoyable. H-E-B is also attacking their competitors with a program called Curbside, which gives all customers an option to not even walk in the store and just have partners shop for them. Because Curbside does not require shoppers to enter the store, this relieves some space for those shopping for their own groceries. SA39’s ability to lay out their store becomes a vital part of the overall experience and makes more products easy to access. There’s nothing better than having a variety of choices and that’s why SA39 is giving their customers plenty to choose from. In that store alone there are over 100,000 different
  • 8. products available. This gives the customer a sense of relief because everything they need is in one store including electronics, kitchen supplies, baby products, cosmetics, clothes, etc. Along with many different departments there are options within the department. A customer can choose from prime, natural, organic, or local meats and that’s for every single cut of meat or any other product in the store including fish market, grocery, and produce. The amount of choices can be overwhelming, but from a customer prospective, you’re always going to get what you want. The variety of options is possible through the shipments that come every morning unlike other stores that come every other day or even once a week and that’s how SA39 keeps their products fresh and always stocked. This simple idea of having an abundance of variety keeps the customers happy because they have access to everything they could possibly need, especially in a Plus store. Whether its department or a product, the customer will always be happier with more variety. Ultimately, if H-E-B SA39 did not have these qualities
  • 9. customers wouldn’t be shopping with that specific store. Customer loyalty is what H-E-B is striving for and with these components of the store, that is what they are achieving. This loyalty creates relationships and overall helps connect to their customers at a very personal level. With this, H-E-B is able to give disaster relief efforts in times of need and overall get to know their customers. • 10. Hayward City Hall I once lived in Hayward, California with my aunt and knows the city well. Hayward City Hall is one of the public places where organizations utilize by holding some of their important occasions and especially workshops. Passing on the knowledge and skills from experts to people seeking the knowledge is essential. It makes sure that there is continuity in innovations and the world does not stand still. Technology has taken the world to a higher level, and the human thinking has been transformed. Organizations have seen the need to have platforms which are aimed at making sure that the potential young innovators are equipped with knowledge that makes it easier for them to thrive in the modern technological world. It’s fortunate that I have visited Hayward City and deep understand the working of it. Hayward City Hall stands as one of the outstanding platforms that help organizations to pass their skills and resources to potential innovators. The location of the hall does not only attract a big number of interested parties, but it also presents a central point where organizations and their targeted audience meet. Hayward City Hall plays host to organizations and their potential innovators, and it was by Heller Manus and developed by Sarfi Regis Group. Hayward City Hall gives organizations an opportunity to inspire potential innovators, tap into the talents of potential innovators and get the best innovators the country has. Inspiration cannot be present unless there are people who know better. It is through having engagements and open forums that inspiration takes place. In this respect, Hayward City Hall plays a significant role in providing a platform where engagements and forums between organizations and potential innovators take place (Owen et al. 760). Most of the young innovators have a dream to work with some of the powerful and prominent
  • 11. Companies, and therefore when organizations come out to embrace them, their dreams are not shattered, and when the same companies need their skills, they will be readily available (Yoo et al. 13). At the same time, it is important to make sure that there is a continuous flow of talents in the market and the best way of doing so is by passing skills to the potential employment candidates. A continuous flow of talents cannot be guaranteed if there are no halls or places which host the investors, organizations and the innovators. It is at this point that the essential role of Hayward City Hall is recognized because it brings together the people of Hayward by creating a good platform to exchange ideas and skills. Considering that the hall is run by the city, it is apparent that access for the public is not limited thus ensuring that there is a place for every person. An organization that only wants to get the finest employees must have mechanisms in place which help in tapping in the best talents. An organization cannot be the best if it only works with the talents which have been rejected in the employment sector. Hayward City management understands that having a workshop venue of the kind will not only benefit the young minds but will also go a long way in identifying some of the best among the young innovators who will workshops. The City Management has realized that one cannot be able to identify a good talent without taking the young innovators for a test (Chesbrough et al. 3). A good test brings in the potential candidates, gives them the resources to use and observes how they conduct themselves. Most of the young innovators are hungry for making a change in the technology sector. With the interest of the community at heart, the City Management has made sure that organizations are encouraged to host their workshop at the Hall and doing so attracts more investors in the city as well as job seekers. With this in mind, at the end of the workshop, the hosting company will have identified the finest talents and will utilize their skills. At the same time, it is important to note that some of the attendees leave with skills
  • 12. which are enough to make them establish their businesses (Geissdoerfer et al. 1218). Therefore, a significant impact is made on the lives of the attendees. Many companies intend to have workshops which do not only give instructions and directions but also give the innovators an opportunity to table their innovations. In this respect, it is evident that the hall provides the best platform for the type of event. Considering that Hayward City Hall is one of the halls which are leading regarding resources and equipment, it is apparent that there are many people who have an interest in holding events at the hall. The City management has done the math, and it is aware that many organizations will show up to hold events at the hall. The City management also knows that for the people who show up for the workshop, a big percentage will recommend others to use the hall for future events (Jagiełło-Kowalczyk, 4). With this, it is expected that the hall might never run out of events and that goes a long way in benefiting the communities around and the organization from Hayward and other parts of the country. Hayward City Hall provides a platform where organizations can identify some of the best innovators and work hand in hand with them to better their lives and also to grow the economy of the city. It is no doubt that Hayward City management has identified the best strategy to bring together the communities around and the business community. The strategic location of the hall gives many organizations an easy task to organize events and bring as many people as possible. The hall has been playing host to many workshops, and that is proof that it has the resources which organizations find helpful during their workshops. Though the hall benefits from the fees charged during the workshops, it is apparent that organizations and the young innovators are the major beneficiaries. Most of the organizations lack better and spacious places to host their
  • 13. workshops. Some workshops take place once in a year or once in a few years, therefore, having an idle space at the premises of an organization may not be a strategic move. In this respect, the significance of Hayward City Hall comes in handy because it creates a venue where the residents and organizations are brought together to share ideas which benefit each party. Most of the City halls are not expensive to hire, and the case is not different from Hayward City Hall. It is for this reason the hall is seen as a promoter of social cohesion and business growth.
