Pantelimon Halippa (1883 - 1979)
Pantelimon Halippa or Pan
Halippa was a Romanian publicist and
politician in Basarabia. He was one of the
most important militants for affirmation
of the Romanian spirit in Basarabia and
for the union of this province with
Romania. He was the President of the
Country Council who voted for the Union
in 1918.He served as minister in various
governments. He was politically
persecuted by the communist regime and
jailed in Sighet. Corresponding member
of the Romanian Academy excluded in
1948, reinstated in rights in 1990.
His political activity intensified and in 1917 he founded the National
Moldavian Party. 1918 found Halippa at the head of the pro-union current,
for which he was elected vice president, then president of the council of
the country, the assembly which on 27 March 1918 voted the Union
of Basarabia with Romania. He also took part in the meetings in Cernăuţi
and Alba-Iulia, which proclaimed the Union of Bucovina and of
Transylvania respectively with Romania.
He is the founder of the Popular University of Chisinau, the Moldavian
Conservator, the Basarabian Society of Writers and Publishers, the
Publishing House and Bookstore "Luceafarul" in Chisinau. In 1932 he
edited and led the magazine "Life of Basarabia" and the daily newspaper
of the same name.
