Pancake Day is celebrated in England on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It is a tradition for English people to eat pancakes on this day as it uses up eggs and flour before the Lenten fasting season. The oldest known pancake recipe is from 1439. A famous pancake race held in Olney, England involves participants running while tossing pancakes. Pancakes are made from a basic recipe including flour, eggs, milk or water, butter, and are often served with toppings like sugar, lemon juice, or jam.
