6. INTRODUCTION – LIGHTING DESIGN
Light is a form of energy manifesting itself as electromagnetic radiation and is closely related to
other form of electromagnetic radiation such as radio waves , radar micro wax infrared and
ultraviolet radiation and x – rays.
Lighting is one of the most over looked and yet important element of good interior design. After
all there is little point in creating luxury surrounding if they cannot them be appreciated
properly of if there is insufficient light to be able to carry out even the most basic of tasks. In
addition through lighting is also essential in terms of creating the mood and ambience of a
living space.
Lighting design that creates a mood is based on approach that is odds with lighting design that
seeks evenly distributed and specific lighting levels . This kind of perfect all over the task lighting
may be appropriate for flexible office space. But it fails to produce an imaginative setting for
most other human activity. By understanding the specific tasks intended for a spaces however
the designer can readily determine the appropriate lighting strategies that will integrate
function and inspiration into design.
7. DISTRIBUTION OF LIGHT
A luminaries lighting fixture emits light is one of three directions – downward , upward or
multidirectional – and in one of two distribution – concentrated or diffuse. Downward light form
a properly designed luminaries has a restricted angular spread. Direct glare is prevented by both
this restricted spread and the shape of the human eyebrow. Upward light usually cover a larger
area of the ceiling is of the low luminance and is unlike to cause distracting glare. Multidirectional
light is emitted in all direction but it cannot emit much of its output sideways without causing
objectionable glare. Upward and downward light is emitted in patterns that vary from narrow to
wide. Concentrated distribution focuses light in a narrow pattern ;, diffuse distribution disperse
light in a wide pattern.
SEVEN DISTRIBUTION OF LIGHT
8. SEVEN TYPE OF DISTRIBUTION LIGHT
CONCENTRATED DOWNWARD DISTRIBUTION -
LUMINIAIRE With Narrow Beam Spreads That Lack
An Upward Component Of Light Produce A
Concentrated. When Located In Low Ceiling
Concentrated Down Ward Beam With Spreads Of 30
Less Create Areas Of Height Luminance On The
Floor With Dark Area Between. To Avoid This
Uneven Luminaries Would Need To Placed
Inordinately Close To Each Other Low Ceiling
Require The Use Of Diffuse Downward Luminaries.
DIFFUSE DOWNWARD DISTRIBUTION -
A Luminaries With A 100 Beam Spread Emitting
Most Of Its Light Below A Cut Off Angle Of 40 From
Horizontal. This Greater Percentage Of Light At
Higher Angle Increases Incident Light An Vertical
Surface Models Faces And Reduce The
Concentration Of Brightness Within The Space.
Diffuse Downward Luminaries Yield A Low Contrast
Setting.
9. CONCENTRATED UPWARD DISTRIBUTION -
A concentrated upward ( indirect ) distribution
directs light toward the ceiling. With light direct
upward and the downward component removed
the ceiling becomes visually prominent. It also
becomes a secondary light sources because of its
reflective properties. The nonuniformily of
concentrated upward distribution reduce the strong
contrast that result form a brightness variations.
DIFFUSE UPWARD ( INDIRECT) DISTRIBUTION -
A diffuse upward distribution direct light toward the
ceiling and the upper side wall. This technique is
used .to create uniform ceiling luminance for the
prevention of glare in areas with video display
terminals and to emphasizes structural form a
decorative detail on a near the ceiling plane. Object
and faces have washed out similar to that caused by
an overcast day.
10. MULTIDIRECTIONAL DIFFUSE DISTRIBUTION -
Multidirectional diffuse distribution is provided by
luminaries that deliver both upward and downward
components of light. These luminaries light in
several direction at the same time toward the
ceiling and wall as well as toward the floor. The
reflected light from the ceiling and the interrelation
of light in the space diffuse the downward
distribution reducing shadow and contrast.
DIRECT / INDIRECT DISTRIBUTION -
Luminaries that deliver both direct and indirect
components of diffuse light but no side lighting are
called direct / indirect . They provided efficient use
of light on work surface while relieving contrast by
reflecting light from the ceiling plane. Because each
point on the ceiling reflects light in every direction
diffuse produces a flat. The reflected light reduce
contrast shadow object and face.
11. MULTIDIRECTIONAL CONCENTRATED DISTRIBUTION -
Multidirectional distribution created with
concentrated beam spreads is called
multidirectional. It is also called semi direct if
60to90 percent of the lumens are direct downward
and semi indirect if lumens are direct upward. A
height contrast no uniform bright nests condition is
produce with concentrated distribution present in
both the upward and downward components. The
upward component reduce excessive contrast in a
space .
12. GRAZING LUMINANCE
Excessive contrast or luminance is direr acting and annoying . This negative side of brightness is
called glare in the extreme glare cripple vision by reducing or destroying the ability to see
accurately. Glare is often misunderstood as too much light in fact it is light coming from the wrong
direction. The result of an extreme luminance within the normal filed of view. the difference
between the high and low beams of automobile headlight at night demonstrate that glare for the
approaching driver is a function of direction as well as intensity.
Glare is also a function of luminance area. Although a small area of luminance area. Although a
small area of luminance is tolerable a lager area of the same intensity become uncomfortable. It is
desirable to reduce luminance intensities as the area of luminance becomes more dominant in the
field of view.

14. TYPES OF LIGHT
Consider a strongly evocative interior spaces one where the mood is immediately striking and
chances are high that lighting played a central role in its design . In a restaurant that is both cozy
and contemporize for instance artificial lighting will inform the design feature and the character of
the space. Simple surface and color will have been selected to take best advantage of the light.
Walls might be warm , buttery yellow and mirror and other reflective surface used to throw the
focal glow of candle and soft light around the room.
By understanding the specific tasks intended for a space however the designer can readily
determine the appropriate lighting strategies that will integrate function and inspiration into a
design.
15. TRACK LIGHT -
Track lighting is one of the best lighting alternatives
out there it is good solution for areas that are hard
to illuminate or add lighting to. Track light can be
installed to suit your space and with different choice
and color to choose from you would end up with a
customer configuration that is tailored to your
needs. Once you put the tracks in place you can
reposition the lamp to vary the lighting effect.
WALL SCONCES -
Wall sconces are also accessory lighting. It can be
used on walls in rooms that are not getting enough
light . It can also be considered as mood lighting
and can be used to light small narrow hallway and
bathrooms.
16. GENERAL LIGHT -
SPORT LIGHT -
A system of lighting employing fittings which emit
the light in approximately equal amounts in an
upward and a downward direction. Provide
uniform illumination across the working plane
lamps are mounted in the systematic and
structured. Work location can be changed without
changing position.
a brilliant light with a focused beam,
mounted on the side of an automobile and
used for illuminating objects not within range
of the headlights .
a lamp projecting a narrow, intense beam of
light directly on to a place or person,
especially a performer on stag
17. PENDANTS / DROP LIGHT -
Dropped or pendant light are good choice for the
kitchen. They come in different finishes and style.
The most popular once are those made with glass
shades that come in different shape and colors.
They can add function and elegance to an otherwise
busy area. Adding three pendant light above the bar
or peninsula can add brightness and elegances that
can reflect beauty of design.
-
They can also be used in any area for to be
performed like in ceiling for fully light up and it be
decorative parts and fully purpose lighting display
for area.
