4. INTRODUCTION
Palawi is first of its kind in Maharashtra, which provides a holistic
approach to HIV positive children’s health and well being. Today
at Palawi they run a successful residential Care Home for 150 HIV
positive orphan children between the ages of 1.6 months to 35
years. The children are from Maharashtra. They have come to the
care home with the reference of local hospitals, NGO’S, childcare
institutions and some children were abandoned at the Railway
Station or Bus Stand.
5. HOW PALAWI WAS FORMED?
In 2001, Mrs. Mangal Shah and her daughter Dimple found
two abandoned baby girls in a nearby village.
The villagers refused to take care of the girls, who were
HIV-positive.
A government hospital refused to admit the girls due to a
lack of guidelines and facilities for PLWHA.
With courage, compassion, and love, Mrs. Shah and her
daughter started Palawi, a shelter and care home for
HIV/AIDS orphan children.
