Pajan was formerly a small settlement named after the abundance of mocora straw in the area. It was conquered by the Inca emperor Huayna Capac as he expanded his empire through the territory. Pajan has a tropical climate with annual temperatures around 24 degrees Celsius and rainfall between 1000-2000mm per year. It is located in the extreme south of Manabí province and has a population of around 9,183 people. The main economic activities are agriculture and cattle raising. Pajan has several natural attractions for tourism like waterfalls, caves, and mountains.
