Mourir ou ne pas mourir... pour la France ? Les Mosellans dans la Grande GuerreSandrine Heiser
En 2015, le ministère de la Culture et de la Communication a inscrit au titre des Commémorations nationales le centenaire de la mention « Mort pour la France », instituée par la loi du 2 juillet 1915. Plus de 1,3 million de militaires français décédés au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale ont obtenu cette mention, portée sur leur acte de décès. Depuis la publication en novembre 2003 du fichier des « Morts pour la France » sur le site Mémoire des Hommes, la base de données s’est enrichie d’environ 1000 « morts » supplémentaires de la Grande Guerre pour lesquels il a été possible de lier la cause de leur décès à un fait de guerre. Ces nouvelles fiches correspondent en partie aux dossiers instruits par l’Office national des anciens combattants et victimes de guerre de Caen en vertu du code des pensions militaires d’invalidité et des victimes de la guerre.
L’Alsace-Lorraine a eu au total 380000 mobilisés dont 50 000 morts et 125 000 blessés. Parmi eux, il est difficile de déterminer avec précision le nombre des mosellans incorporés sous les drapeaux allemands ; il reste plus facile de dénombrer les soldats nés en Moselle et morts au combat au cours de la Grande Guerre. En effet, l’enquête menée dans les années 1920 par le curé de Réning, l'abbé Louis Weber, a permis une première estimation autour de 17000 combattants mosellans tués en 1914-1918. Après vérification des données manuscrites et comparaison avec les autres sources aujourd’hui disponibles (registres matricules, état civil, livre d’or du souvenir français, fiches des #MPLF, etc.), les archives départementales de la Moselle ont pu établir une nouvelle liste de plus de 15900 individus, dont 3500 natifs « d’ailleurs » (Alsace, France, « Vieille-Allemagne »). Ce « Mur des noms » est consultable au Musée de Gravelotte, lieu de mémoire des Mosellans tombés au champ d’honneur, sur une borne interactive interrogeable par nom et par lieu de naissance ou de mort.
On y dénombre 1538 soldats, soient environ 10 % des morts mosellans, tombés sous l’uniforme français. De nombreux soldats s'engagèrent en effet dans l’armée française sous un nom d'emprunt avant le 5 août 1914, date de la promulgation d'une loi française qui accorda la naturalisation immédiate aux volontaires alsaciens-lorrains. Dans l’état actuel de l’indexation du site Mémoire des hommes il est possible d’identifier 980 militaires ou victimes civiles originaires de Moselle, dont 896 ont obtenu la mention « Mort pour la France ». La publication en novembre 2014 du fichier des « non morts pour la France » a permis d’enrichir le site de 83 mosellans supplémentaires. Dans un cas seulement, la mention reste « non statuée ». Il s’agit du général Frédéric Henry MICHELER né à Phalsbourg et décédé le 15 août 1917 à Lyon. Où sont passés les 558 combattants mosellans non recensés sur le site Mémoire des hommes ? Sont-ils d�

We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
