hat a whirlwind fall has been so far! September kicked
into high gear almost immediately, with our firstTrial By
Fire No More event on 16 September featuring Master
Ian Caldwell, who gave a wonderful presentation to our 40+ new
lawyer and student attendees.
The Membership Reception took place the following week
on 24 September, celebrating TLABC’s 35th
anniversary!
An unforgettable speech from TLABC President Krista Simon,
plus the presentation of the PAC Champion of Justice award to
Ed Montague, made for a wonderful celebration.
The Women Lawyers Retreat planning committee’s work
came to fruition with the 10th
Annual Women Lawyers Retreat
taking place 23-25 October 2015. We welcomed the Hon-
ourable Madam Louise Arbour CC GOQ, the Hon-ourable
Madam Justice Griffin, Master Muir, the Honourable Madam
Justice Ballance, and Judge Dossa as our faculty for the weekend.
Exceptional education set against the backdrop of the misty
lake and wilderness just outside of Whistler made for a won-
derful weekend of shared knowledge, relaxation, and cama-
raderie.
TLABC prides itself on being an organization that facilitates
exceptional experiences for our members. Whether that means
attending an intimate evening lecture with Chief Justice Hinkson
(Trial By Fire No More), dancing the night away at the Holiday
Bash with some pillars of BC’s legal community (4 December
2015), or relaxing at the spa with judges and senior counsel
(Women Lawyers Retreat), we strive to provide unique, exclusive,
outside-of-the-box education and networking opportunities.
I am very excited to announce, on behalf of our New Lawyers
Committee,TLABC’s very first New Lawyers Adventure Retreat,
taking place 10-12 June 2016 in gorgeous Squamish BC. Offering
at least 4 hours of CPD credit, this all-inclusive weekend will also
include an adventure of your choice: rock climbing, hiking, yoga,
paddle boarding or kayaking! If you have non-TLABC colleagues
or friends interested in attending, please have them contact me
at amanda@tlabc.org.
This is YOUR ORGANIZATION. If you are interested in
being on a committee, please reach out. We are always looking
for people who are passionate about the organization and
access to justice to help us continue to create excellent educa-
tion, events, materials, benefits and experiences for our mem-
bership. V
My professional designation is as a social service worker, and I have a BA in Gender Studies, but I tend to
go with “Jill of All Trades”. I’ve worked as a lay midwife, managed social housing in the DTES, contracted
myself as a grant writer, and was on the mayor’s Seniors Advisory Council working with Gregor
(yes, we’re on a first name basis) on an action plan for taking care of elders in our community. In 2012,
I moved into the legal field, assisting residential school survivors with their Independent Assessment
Packages. In 2013, a trial lawyer colleague told me to apply with TLABC, and I am so glad I did! In my
spare time. I enjoy hosting big groups of friends for dinner, relaxing with our two cats, Olive and Baby,
and catching my partner, Brendan’s, stand-up comedy act.
