A
Design Thinking
Design thinking is an innovative problem-solving process rooted in a set of
skills.
Coming up with an idea is easy. Coming up with the right one takes work.
With design thinking, throwing out what you think you know and starting
from scratch opens up all kinds of possibilities.

Problems and their solution
From the movie
5
Problem 1
• He saw his wife’s eyes were moist due to chopping onions, which prompted him to find a
solution. He visited a fair where he saw a toy monkey playing drums, which got him
thinking and he replaced the drumsticks with knives. It was an innovative solution to a
daily kitchen problem.
6
Problem 2
• Another problem he witnessed was his wife was having difficulty sitting on the
bicycle as there was just one seat. So, he designed another seat at the back
of the bicycle for her from a wooden plank.
Problem 3
• Explore - The wider issue that
Padman highlights is the stigma
and taboos that surround
menstruation. Restrictions like not
being allowed to enter religious
shrines, touch people or food in
the kitchen, or touch or eat
pickles.
• Ideate – After discovering that
women are reluctant to buy
sanitary pads due to high costs,
he thought to make his own
sanitary pads at low costs.
• Create – A prototype of the
Sanitary Pad. He tried to create a
pad using cotton wrapped in
muslin cloth.
• Evolve – After many unsuccessful
attempts and feedbacks, he finally
managed to create a pad that was
efficient and costed just Rs.2.

Creation of the prototype model
Idea/process of the prototype
Step 1
Grinding the cellulose
sheets
Step 2
Compressing the
cellulose fiber
Step 3
Sealing the cellulose with
nonwoven fabric
Step 4
Sterilization of the pad

TAM ( Total Addressable Market)
• 67.1crore (approx.) of Indian women
use sanitary napkins.
SAM (Servicable Available Market)
• The market accessible to Laxmikant
i.e., all the other cities, villages and
other parts of the country.
SOM (Serviceable Obtainable
Market)
• He reached out to women in the near by
villages, also managed to create
employment opportunities thus,
resulting in a wider market base.
