2. What is ozone?
A gas composed of three atoms of oxygen.
ozone gases in the upper layers absorb intense ultraviolet
radiation from the sun.
The ozone layer, which only makes up 0.00006 percent of
Earth’s atmosphere, is getting thinner and thinner all the
time.
3. Ozone layer depletion:
It refers to gradual thinning of the protective layer of ozone gas in the
earth’s stratosphere.
due to the release of chemical compounds containing gaseous bromine
or chlorine from industries or other human activities.
Chlorofluorocarbons are the most abundant ozone-depleting substance.
It is only when the chlorine atom reacts with some other molecule, it does
not react with ozone.
Depletion of the ozone layer exposes humans to harmful ultraviolet rays,
this causes skin diseases, cataract, cancer, impaired immune system etc.
