Innovation is the process that converts new knowledge into new products and services. It constitutes one of the two fundamental supports of the companies' competitiveness. Construction is a very important activity in Spain, but companies of the construction industry invert very little compared to other industrial activities. Due to this fact, the R&D&i's investment in the Spanish construction industry is eight times less than the average of the EU-15. One of the reasons that explicate this situation is the current systemization scarcity of innovation; however, when there is innovation, it concentrates mainly in the constructive procedures to solve specific problems.
Nowadays, innovation is not considered an art any more, but a manageable process. The standardization of innovation allows the increase of innovation's effectiveness and efficiency, reducing risks and supporting companies to recover their initial investments with high speed. Spain is positioned in an inflexion point produced by the beginning of standardization and certification of innovative projects and innovation management. This article describes the most important requirements related to innovation projects stated in the UNE 166001 standard, and those requirements of the UNE 166002 standard related to the management of R&D&i.
The most important conclusion is that the standardization of the innovation in the Spanish construction industry can be very effective in order to systemize new knowledge into new constructive procedures. This change can be enhanced because R&D&i management is being valued in public works' bids as an added factor to the traditional ones: price, duration and quality.

Artificial Lift Whitepaper: Making Your ESP Talk To YouDean Murphy
The subject of this paper is ‘a technique to make your ESP talk to you’; when designing and
operating ESPs the first thing that you need to do is give the ESP a ‘mouth’, then you can attempt to
understand its language and let it talk to you.
Traditionally, the ESP ‘mouth’ was an amp chart and a fluid level shot on the annulus. Interpretation
of the data then told you something about motor load and pump intake pressure. Today’s ESP
technology is such that the prudent operator can obtain ESP operating parameters by using a
downhole sensor. The dilemma when faced with the wealth of data that comes from such a sensor
is ‘which parameters are most important?’. By recognising which variables respond most quickly to a
change in operating conditions, you can give your ESP the ability to talk to you.

Broken MIRRORS
“Breaking a Mirror Brings Seven Years Bad luck”.
The superstition regarding breaking mirrors goes back to ancient Rome. The Romans were the first to create glass mirrors. They believed the mirror had the power to confiscate a part of the user’s soul.If a person’s reflected image became distorted in any way this could mean a corruption in his or her soul.
"The true reason that breaking a mirror was 7 years bad luck is because when mirrors were first made they were so expensive that if you broke on you would serve 7 years as an indentured servant to the owner of the mirror because not too many people could afford to buy another one to replace it."
Black CATS Crossing your path
As one version of the belief goes, if a black cat crosses your path, bad luck will befall you.
In ancient Egypt, the Goddess Bast was a black, female cat. Christians, wanting to rid society of all traces of other religions, convinced the ignorant that black cats were demons in disguise and should thus be destroyed. In the process, they also destroyed the kindly women who cared for the cats, believing them to be witches.
Being demons, a black cat crossing your path would create a barrier of evil, cutting you off from God and blocking the entrance to heaven.

3. A LETTER FROM THE CONFERENCE DIRECTOR
Well control is both a complex and critical aspect of
any drilling program in the Gulf of Mexico. A robust
well control program ensures the safety of the
workforce, the reliability of equipment and protects
the environment from the release of hydrocarbons.
The regulatory framework for well control has been
developing at pace since the Macondo disaster in
2010. BSEE’s Final Drilling Safety Rule, released
in August 2012, sought to significantly improve
drilling safety by strengthening requirements for
safety equipment, well control systems, and
blowout prevention practices in offshore oil and
gas operations.
More updates to 20 CRF 250 are expected, namely
with the implementation of API’s Standard 53
and developments to Best Available and Safest
Technologies. (BAST)
Finally, the publication of the International
Association of Oil & Gas Producers (OGP)
Recommendations for Enhancements to Well
Control Training, Examination & Certification
Report, published in 2012, represented an
increasing emphasis on the non-technical skills
which form a critical part of any well control
program.
These developments are essential for the future
of the industry given the resurgence of the Gulf
of Mexico as a global hotspot for oil and gas
exploration and production and the need to ensure
safe operations. Due mainly to improvements in
seismic technologies and significant new plays
being identified in the pre-salt Lower Tertiary
Layer, it is estimated that this market contains
an estimated 15 billion barrels of oil, valued at
approximately $1.5 trillion based on current prices.
In order for industry to capitalize on this significant
opportunity compliantly and safely, it is now more
important than ever before to share information on
the key non-technical criteria that make up effective
well control processes.
The Origin of OWC 2014
OWC 2014 was developed in collaboration with the
offshore community over the course of a 12 week
research program consisting of in-depth primary
discussion with 45+ leading industry figures. Below
is an overview of the organizations that were
engaged to help us to define the program:
OWC 2014 is a must attend event in 2014 for any
organization involved in drilling activity in the Gulf of
Mexico. I look forward to seeing you there.

planned and implemented in uncertain environments
to mitigate a lack of operational experience and
proven technology
• Benefit from an overview of probabilistic risk
assessment for equipment certification to ensure
your drilling programs integrity
• Identify how to utilize equipment failure prediction
in uncertain HP/HT conditions to mitigate the risk of
early life equipment failures
SECTION 4: PLANNING
Can Oil Spill Response Plans be Functional
and Regulatory Compliant
• Discuss how OSRPs can be developed from
compliance documents into functional tools that can
improve operational performance
• Learn how API has developed a tool in which
Information is presented in a logical and sequential
manner to improve functionality
• Understand how actionable information should be
combined with general background information and
how guidance for scaling up to a Tier 3 incident should
be provided

Emergency Response Planning
• Review corporate policies for emergency response
planning best practice and engender a preventative
culture in your organisation
• Discuss hazard analysis procedures to identify
potential risks to your drilling operation and mitigate
risk through the identification of early warning signs
• Discuss Incident Command Planning & Incident
Command Systems to understand how you can
effectively implement your emergency response
actions
Well Classification and Equipment
Selection Panel
• Discuss key factors such as pressure, temperature and
fluid in accurate well classification that will influence
your approach to well control operations
• Evaluate BOP configuration options post API
Standard 53 to ensure you have the appropriate tools
in place to control the well
• Learn how to tailor available equipment to your
well plan to avoid failures or blow-outs on your next
drilling project
SECTION 5: EQUIPMENT & BOP RELIABILITY
Challenges of Critical Safety BOP Control
Systems
• Receive a breakdown of the typical challenges faced
Improving Equipment Reliability
BLOW-OUT RESPONSE & CONTAINMENT
• Through detailed well classification, match equipment WORKSHOP
that is fit for purpose and rated appropriately to your
drilling project to mitigate potential failures
• Learn how to develop maintenance and planning
process that will maximise your equipment’s reliability
and improve the cost effectiveness of your project
• Develop an effective QA/QC program to ensure the
quality of the materials and equipment for your next
project protects against potential failures
Modularity for Reliability
• Improve reliability through the development of
components, learning from drilling, production,
work over and other industries, to keep your system
operational
• Understand how subsea monitoring of components
with a focus on real time notification and additional
monitoring points can mitigate the risk of component
failure
• Learn how to replace components with zero
downtime, using modular and small components with
ROV intervention to reduce costs and save time
