Overview Write a proposal that describes the text you will analyze for the Analysis Essay and outlines your plan for completing the analysis. Members of the class are required to prepare an applied research paper, with a minimum of 10 pages but not to exceed 12 pages in length (excluding cover page and appendices), on a specific issue related to leadership or organizational behavior.

Topic Selection
1. Select a specific organization of interest to you and identify a problem at the firm related to organizational behavior (OB).
2. Think of yourself as an organizational consultant and assume that a key manager has requested a thorough analysis and recommended course of action to resolve an actual organizational problem that will make a difference to the future performance of the organization.
3. Identify which of our TCOs or specific topics in the syllabus are related to the problem you identify.
Research Sources
1. All papers must have a minimum of six scholarly sources cited within the text of the paper and identified in the references section.
2. Additional research sources can be attached in a bibliography.
3. Review the following document for instructions on how to access and use EBSCOhost for your research: EBSCOhost.
Paper Format
1. All papers should be single sided, double-spaced, using a 11- or 12-point font.
2. Length of the paper to be between 10 and 12 pages, not counting cover page and appendices.
3. The first page should include the title of the work, student name, address, telephone and e-mail address, course number, date, and instructor name.
4. Follow APA style for general format and citations.
5. Paper sections must adhere to the guidelines below and each section must be labeled in the text.
6. Language should be clear, concise, and precise.
7. Tone should be professional, consistent, and not filled with jargon.
8. Grammar and syntax (sentence structure) must be correct.

This assignment has two goals: 1) have students, via research, increase their understanding of impacts of information
technology on current world issues, and 2) learn to correctly use the tools and techniques within Word to format a research
paper, including use of available References and citation tools. These skills will be valuable throughout a student’s
academic career.
The paper will require a title page, NO abstract, three to five full pages of content with incorporation of a minimum of 3
external resources from credible sources and a Works Cited/References page. Wikipedia and similar general information
sites, blogs or discussion groups are not considered creditable sources for a research project. No more than 10% of the
paper may be in the form of a direct citation from an external source. Choose your topic from the list of topics that follow
these organization steps.
Paper organization
Open Word and save a blank document with the following name:
“Student’s LastNameFirstInitial Research Paper”
The paper should be organized in the following way:
1. Title page:
a. Center in the middle of the page (horizontally and vertically) the title (subject) of the paper and below that
your name
2. Body of the paper:
a. Use 12-point Arial font
b. Set the margins at 1”
c. Length – 3-5 full pages, not counting the title page or the References page.
d. Include a minimum of 3 APA-formatted citations and related References page. Every reference must be cited
at least once, and every citation have an entry in the References list. If you are not familiar with APA format,
it is recommended that you use the References feature in Word for your citations and Reference List or refer
to the "Citing and Writing" option under the Resources/Library/Get Help area in the LEO classroom. It is
important to review the final format for APA-style correctness even if generated by Word.
e. Include at least two (2) informational footnotes. Footnotes are not used to list a reference! Footnotes contain

Research shows that people learn effectively when working on real problems grounded in their own work experience. To this end, our course project is designed to incorporate students' work experience into the learning process in this course.
The project is an opportunity to explore, in-depth, a topic related to the course objectives (TCOs) that is of significance to you or your organization (current or former).

Members of the class are required to prepare an applied research paper, with a minimum of 10 pages but not to exceed 12 pages in length (excluding cover page and appendices), on a specific issue related to leadership or organizational behavior.

Topic Selection
1. Select a specific organization of interest to you and identify a problem at the firm related to organizational behavior (OB).
2. Think of yourself as an organizational consultant and assume that a key manager has requested a thorough analysis and recommended course of action to resolve an actual organizational problem that will make a difference to the future performance of the organization.
3. Identify which of our TCOs or specific topics in the syllabus are related to the problem you identify.
Research Sources
1. All papers must have a minimum of six scholarly sources cited within the text of the paper and identified in the references section.
2. Additional research sources can be attached in a bibliography.
3. Review the following document for instructions on how to access and use EBSCOhost for your research: EBSCOhost.
Paper Format
1. All papers should be single sided, double-spaced, using a 11- or 12-point font.
2. Length of the paper to be between 10 and 12 pages, not counting cover page and appendices.
3. The first page should include the title of the work, student name, address, telephone and e-mail address, course number, date, and instructor name.
4. Follow APA style for general format and citations.
5. Paper sections must adhere to the guidelines below and each section must be labeled in the text.
6. Language should be clear, concise, and precise.
7. Tone should be professional, consistent, and not filled with jargon.
8. Grammar and syntax (sentence structure) must be correct.
9. Report must be free of misspellings and typos.

1. All figures and tables must be referred to in your text before they appear on the page.

This assignment has two goals: 1) have students, via research, increase their understanding of impacts of information
technology on current world issues, and 2) learn to correctly use the tools and techniques within Word to format a research
paper, including use of available References and citation tools. These skills will be valuable throughout a student’s
academic career.
The paper will require a title page, NO abstract, three to five full pages of content with incorporation of a minimum of 3
external resources from credible sources and a Works Cited/References page. Wikipedia and similar general information
sites, blogs or discussion groups are not considered creditable sources for a research project. No more than 10% of the
paper may be in the form of a direct citation from an external source. Choose your topic from the list of topics that follow
these organization steps.

Open Word and save a blank document with the following name:

The paper should be organized in the following way:
1. Title page:
a. Center in the middle of the page (horizontally and vertically) the title (subject) of the paper and below that
your name
2. Body of the paper:
a. Use 12-point Arial font
b. Set the margins at 1”
c. Length – 3-5 full pages, not counting the title page or the References page.
d. Include a minimum of 3 APA-formatted citations and related References page. Every reference must be cited
at least once, and every citation have an entry in the References list. If you are not familiar with APA format,
it is recommended that you use the References feature in Word for your citations and Reference List or refer
to the "Citing and Writing" option under the Resources/Library/Get Help area in the LEO classroom. It is
important to review the final format for APA-style correctness even if generated by Word.
e. Include at least two (2) informational footnotes. Footnotes are not used to list a reference! Footnotes contain
information about the topic to which the footnote has been attached.
f. Place the references on a separate page following the body of the paper. Note: Use a hard return (CTRL
Enter) after the end of your paper body and the start of the References page.

a. Introduction - Identify the issue or idea. Explain why was the topic selected and what you are trying to

topic within the past 3 years.

Choose a timely and specific problem or challenge facing people in the
same job role as the interviewee for your Client Interview. The topic
must be specific and actionable, not a broad subject such as "leadership"
or "fundraising" but a specific problem or challenge faced by people in
that job role.
The paper must explain the problem or challenge and must offer specific
solutions that are actionable by the reader. The paper must not merely
explore the topic or present solutions that are outside the scope of the
person's job role ("the government should...," "society will has to
change...," "universities need to offer...," or "technology needs to be
developed...").
The best reports will present information from current articles, webinars,
and conference presentations intended for people in this job role or
industry.

The Literature Review
This week, we will be expanding on the work we started in week two of this course. Rather than just analyzing resources, this week we will be blending our resources into a larger frame, drawing connections between each of the resources and to our project thesis.
A literature review has two specific goals:
To demonstrate that you, the researcher, has done his or her due dillgence in exploring the work other researchers have done in the area; and
To ground the theory in the current research available.
You should think of your literature review as a way to tell a story about your research using sources as guideposts along the way. Think about your role in this as a moderator in a discussion between your sources, and your job is to keep them focused on your thesis (this is usually the first section of a research article, so you should use the literature reviews of your sources as a model for what we are doing here).
You will need a minimum of five (5) sources in your literature review (you will need a total of ten in your Final Project). Consider the following to help you gather these sources:
Do a library search using Grantham’s EBSCOhost library database or from Google Scholar
Use key words to search (try different variations)
Only use scholarly books or peer-reviewed journal articles
Choose sources from within the past 5 years (you can set your EBSCO search to only show articles within this range)
Read titles to see what looks relevant (don’t waste your time reading things that don’t look like they will work for your project)
Read the abstracts and only choose the most pertinent articles (once again, don’t waste your time—if the abstract doesn’t seem promising, move on to the nerxt article).
Please note: information from the Internet may not be used for this project unless the source is from an e-journal (a peer-reviewed journal that is published on the web). The organization’s website is an exception to this rule, but it can only count as one of your ten sources.

Create a literature review, incorporating each of your references (minimum of five), tying them to each other and to the thesis of your project in a single narrative. You should cite each source in the body of your literature review and in a references page at the end of your paper.
Your literature review should be arranged in the following way:
Introduction: A concise definition of the topic and organization with which you are working. A clearly stated thesis of your project. A brief description about how this project might be interesting and/or important to your readers/adudience.

Technology impacts most of our lives on a daily basis.
From the smart phones we hold in our hands to the laptops and tablets we use for school, work or leisure, technology has changed, and continues to influences the ways in which we communicate, work, learn, and play.
While some developments in technology are well-received and widely used in effective ways that benefit society, other developments bring about controversy and disagreement over how specific technologies are used and to what extent. For instance, video games have become popular among people of all generations, but its uses and effects on people and society has created some very different views. Video games are sometimes blamed for promoting negative behavior among children and adolescents, such as criminal activities and physical violence (Barlett, et al., O’Toole). Some people also argue that habitual uses of video games lead to health issues such as addiction and obesity (Grüsser et al.). Video game addiction can also lead to sleep deprivation and lack of concentration, and in some cases affect people’s performance at work or school. While some people may be quick to dismiss all forms of gaming as the culprit, others argue that not all video games or all uses of video games are problematic. James Gee, a literacy specialist and advocate for the use of video games in teaching and learning, argues that “any learning, whether it's books, a movie, or a game, can lead to bad or good results depending on the environment in which it's [played], not the game itself”
and thatgood video games can be extremely useful as a learning tool, facilitating the development of problem-solving abilities and language skills” (Sheffield 11).
Various forms of technology have also changed what it means to be literate. To use the sociological imagination, it is important to pay attention to the social and historical context in which we find ourselves. For your upcoming literature review, your team is required to gather 10 published sources which address your research question. Structure of the Database
Read the requirements for the database below and understand how the database should work before you create the design. Remember to follow the best practices presented in TestOut and the online lesson content for creating professional Access databases.
Create the Tables
You will create new tables that contain information about the Rio Salado Boat and Marine Dealership’s manufacturers and inventory. When creating fields for your tables, it is important to break down your data into the smallest chunks you can (
fine data granularity
) to make it easier to extract data from the database later. You will also need to join the tables on common fields later in the project. For this project, assume a manufacturer can supply the boat dealership with multiple types of boats for the dealership’s inventory.
NOTE:
Remember to assign the most appropriate data type to each of the fields and that one of the fields in each of your tables must be set as the
Primary Key
. You do not need to enter data records into your tables at this time; you will create a form later in this project for data entry.

The purpose of this study was to analyze a nationally representative sample of families referred
to Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies, the National Survey of Child and Adolescent
Weil-Being, to examine the association between maternal depression and parenting practices
over a 36-month follow-up period.Three hypotheses were tested: (1) Depressed mothers are'
more likely to demonstrate harsh parenting than are nondepressed mothers; (2) depressed
mothers are more likely to demonstrate neglectful parenting than are nondepressed mothers;
and (3) depressed mothers are more likely to demonstrate emotional maltreatment than are
nondepressed mothers. The interaction between depression and time was also analyzed for
each parenting practice to determine how changes in maternal depression affected changes in
parenting. The sample for this study was 1,536 mother-child dyads in which the child was age
three to 10 years and remained in the home after a CPS investigation. Depression remained
high across time points and was associated with increased risk of emotional maltreatment and
neglect over a 36-inonth period. In addition, self-reported emotional maltreatment remained
high across time points. Implications of this work are the needs for better identification of
mental health needs for mothers entering the child welfare system and parent training to
specifically address positive parenting.

aternal depression, a critical public
health concern, is prevalent among
mothers referred to Child Protective
Services (CPS) agencies. In fact, nearly a quarter of
adults entering the child welfare system meet the
diagnostic criteria for a major depressive episode
in the preceding 12 months (U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services, Administration on
Children.Youth and Families [HHS, ACYF], 2005),
compared with only 7% of adults in the general
population (Kessler, Chiu, Demier, & Walters, 2005).
Furthermore, w ômen have an increased likelihood
of experiencing depression compared with men
(Kessler et al., 2003), and women exposed to a
high number of chronic Stressors—as many women
referred to CPS agencies are—are three times more
likely than women with less exposure to Stressors to
experience maternal depression (Orr,James, Burns,
& Thompson, 1989). Given that women comprise
the vast majority of primary caregivers among the
child welfare population (HHS, ACYF, 2005), it is
important to understand how maternal depression
affects outcomes after a CPS referral.
The high rate of maternal depression in the child
welfare system is a concern given its influence on
parenting practices. Symptoms of depression may
impede a woman's capacity to provide care for her
children, placing her at risk to engage in neglectful
parentin.

The Literature ReviewThis week, we will be expanding on the work w.docx
The Literature Review
This week, we will be expanding on the work we started in week two of this course. Rather than just analyzing resources, this week we will be blending our resources into a larger frame, drawing connections between each of the resources and to our project thesis.
A literature review has two specific goals:
To demonstrate that you, the researcher, has done his or her due dillgence in exploring the work other researchers have done in the area; and
To ground the theory in the current research available.
You should think of your literature review as a way to tell a story about your research using sources as guideposts along the way. Think about your role in this as a moderator in a discussion between your sources, and your job is to keep them focused on your thesis (this is usually the first section of a research article, so you should use the literature reviews of your sources as a model for what we are doing here).
You will need a minimum of five (5) sources in your literature review (you will need a total of ten in your Final Project). Consider the following to help you gather these sources:
Do a library search using Grantham’s EBSCOhost library database or from Google Scholar
Use key words to search (try different variations)
Only use scholarly books or peer-reviewed journal articles
Choose sources from within the past 5 years (you can set your EBSCO search to only show articles within this range)
Read titles to see what looks relevant (don’t waste your time reading things that don’t look like they will work for your project)
Read the abstracts and only choose the most pertinent articles (once again, don’t waste your time—if the abstract doesn’t seem promising, move on to the nerxt article).
Please note: information from the Internet may not be used for this project unless the source is from an e-journal (a peer-reviewed journal that is published on the web). The organization’s website is an exception to this rule, but it can only count as one of your ten sources.
Assignment
Create a literature review, incorporating each of your references (minimum of five), tying them to each other and to the thesis of your project in a single narrative. You should cite each source in the body of your literature review and in a references page at the end of your paper.
Your literature review should be arranged in the following way:
Introduction: A concise definition of the topic and organization with which you are working. A clearly stated thesis of your project. A brief description about how this project might be interesting and/or important to your readers/adudience.
Main Body: A discussion of each of your sources, including what they are claiming, how they relate to other sources you are using, and how they support your thesis (make sure you identify and cite each source as you use them). Each work should be summarized and evaluated for its premise, scope, and conclusion. In addition, address any inconsistencies, omissions, or errors.

From the smart phones we hold in our hands to the laptops and tablets we use for school, work or leisure, technology has changed, and continues to influences the ways in which we communicate, work, learn, and play.
While some developments in technology are well-received and widely used in effective ways that benefit society, other developments bring about controversy and disagreement over how specific technologies are used and to what extent. For instance, video games have become popular among people of all generations, but its uses and effects on people and society has created some very different views. Video games are sometimes blamed for promoting negative behavior among children and adolescents, such as criminal activities and physical violence (Barlett, et al., O’Toole). Some people also argue that habitual uses of video games lead to health issues such as addiction and obesity (Grüsser et al.). Video game addiction can also lead to sleep deprivation and lack of concentration, and in some cases affect people’s performance at work or school. While some people may be quick to dismiss all forms of gaming as the culprit, others argue that not all video games or all uses of video games are problematic. James Gee, a literacy specialist and advocate for the use of video games in teaching and learning, argues that “any learning, whether it's books, a movie, or a game, can lead to bad or good results depending on the environment in which it's [played], not the game itself”
and thatgood video games can be extremely useful as a learning tool, facilitating the development of problem-solving abilities and language skills” (Sheffield 11).
Various forms of technology have also changed what it means to be literate. In 2008, The National Council of Teachers of English issued a statement defining twenty-first century literacies, recognizing the role of technology in shaping the meaning of literacy: “Because technology has increased the intensity and complexity of literate environments, the twenty-first century demands that a literate person possess a wide range of abilities and competencies.” Literacy in this sense includes many types of activities that are “multiple, dynamic, and malleable”--such as reading online newspaper articles to participating in virtual class discussion and even interacting on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Weibo. Background: Sociological imagination is a phrase from sociologist C. Wright (The Promise). Mills was interested in how an average American understood his or her everyday life. He found that people’s understandings of the world are limited by the social situations they find themselves in, particularly their family, friends, schools, and workplaces. It is hard to see the larger picture and how your life fits in. Sociological imagination is a quality of mind that can be developed with conscientious practice, and that helps you understand the larger meanings of experiences. In particular, it helps you connect private troubles or choices to public issues, and to understand the influence of culture, socialization, stratification on your life and lives of others. To use the sociological imagination, it is important to pay attention to the social and historical context in which we find ourselves. This does not mean that the social context determines what happens to us entirely. Rather, our choices are shaped by the society we live in and larger forces.

Write 3 pages in which you apply the sociological imagination to your own life, or to the life of someone close to you. First, write about the situation without sociological imagination. The purpose of this study was to analyze a nationally representative sample of families referred
to Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies, the National Survey of Child and Adolescent
Weil-Being, to examine the association between maternal depression and parenting practices
over a 36-month follow-up period.Three hypotheses were tested: (1) Depressed mothers are'
more likely to demonstrate harsh parenting than are nondepressed mothers; (2) depressed
mothers are more likely to demonstrate neglectful parenting than are nondepressed mothers;
and (3) depressed mothers are more likely to demonstrate emotional maltreatment than are
nondepressed mothers. The interaction between depression and time was also analyzed for
each parenting practice to determine how changes in maternal depression affected changes in
parenting. The sample for this study was 1,536 mother-child dyads in which the child was age
three to 10 years and remained in the home after a CPS investigation. Depression remained
high across time points and was associated with increased risk of emotional maltreatment and
neglect over a 36-inonth period. In addition, self-reported emotional maltreatment remained
high across time points. Implications of this work are the needs for better identification of
mental health needs for mothers entering the child welfare system and parent training to
specifically address positive parenting.

aternal depression, a critical public
health concern, is prevalent among
mothers referred to Child Protective
Services (CPS) agencies. In fact, nearly a quarter of
adults entering the child welfare system meet the
diagnostic criteria for a major depressive episode
in the preceding 12 months (U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services, Administration on
Children.Youth and Families [HHS, ACYF], 2005),
compared with only 7% of adults in the general
population (Kessler, Chiu, Demier, & Walters, 2005).
Furthermore, w ômen have an increased likelihood
of experiencing depression compared with men
(Kessler et al., 2003), and women exposed to a
high number of chronic Stressors—as many women
referred to CPS agencies are—are three times more
likely than women with less exposure to Stressors to
experience maternal depression (Orr,James, Burns,
& Thompson, 1989). Given that women comprise
the vast majority of primary caregivers among the
child welfare population (HHS, ACYF, 2005), it is
important to understand how maternal depression
affects outcomes after a CPS referral.
The high rate of maternal depression in the child
welfare system is a concern given its influence on
parenting practices. Symptoms of depression may
impede a woman's capacity to provide care for her
children, placing her at risk to engage in neglectful
parentin.

Objective: The objective for this assignment is for students to understand and critically analyze the multiple pressures on policy makers in Texas as they most listen to their leaders, the governor, the voters (social responsibility) and their own conscience (personal responsibility) in deciding how to cast their vote on a controversial issue.
Assignment: You have recently been elected as a Republican to the Texas Senate from a competitive district (even number of Democrats, Republicans and Independents) just outside of Dallas. One of the first bills that you must vote on is House Bill 3- a Bill to forbid the creation of sanctuary cities (protecting undocumented immigrants from deportation). Your constituents support the bill as does the Governor your party, but you oppose it on grounds that most undocumented Texans are hardworking people who want to become legal citizens. The Speaker of the House opposes the bill as well.

Use as few words as you can to make your statements. This will allow you more room to develop your great ideas!
Avoid repetition and redundancy
of both ideas and words. This is the issue that I usually subtract the most points for, so take care.
For example, when you edit your papers, make sure that you don’t say “Cool Herc is widely accepted as the originator of hip hop”, and then two sentences later, “As Cool Herc is the originator of hip hop…”. See how these two are the same idea? If the reader already has the information, repeating it just takes up space. Another thing to avoid is using the same word multiple times in quick succession. For example: “I found it exciting to listen to the this music. Eri B. has an exciting tone to his voice. When I hear how he flows when he strings words together, I feel excited.” See how ‘excitement’ occurs three times in three sentences? Here’s another more subtle example: “He used the turntable as a way to switch songs seamlessly, using the scratch method to cover up the different beats that were used in each song.” In this example, the word ‘use’ occurs three times in the same sentence! Because it’s a less emotional word, it might be harder to catch, but it’s just as problematic.
I like to see ‘I’ statements.
I find that turning the focus on yourself (especially when we are dealing with sensitive issues and incorporating personal experience, as I encourage) is a great way to avoid generalizing groups and ideas. If your statement is clearly from your perspective, then I as a reader can empathize with your position. If you use lots of ‘we as a generalized group of people act and feel this specific way’, it makes me wonder what research you’ve done, what data points you have, and how many people you have interviewed in order to have that knowledge.
Going off of the previous expectation:
BE SPECIFIC!
If you do make a generalized statement about a situation, back it up with details. Show the research. Reference or quote the authors who initially made the observations and put their work into context. If you tell me that Cool Herc is largely agreed to be the originator of hip hop, tell me why and give examples.
For example, something with detail and context would be: “Although Jamaican soundsystem culture is at the roots of hip hop, Cool Herc was the first to create tracks sourced from James Brown, using the funkier, harder beats that we’ve come to associate with hip hop today.” See how this gives specific details and context on either end of the statement that Cool Herc was the first person to make hip hop?

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

- 1. Overview Write a proposal that describes the text you will analyze for the Analysis Essay and outlines your plan for completing the analysis. Assignment Now that you've done some invention work and received feedback on your initial choices for this project, you will develop a formal proposal that describes the plans you will use for the Analysis Essay assignment . This proposal should begin by naming the text you want to analyze. It should then explain why you find the text relevant to a specific issue that affects the community you have decided to write about. Justify your response: why is this a good text to analyze? How does breaking down the text help an audience understand the issue that is affecting the community? Finally, the proposal should discuss the most important terms you will use to explain how the text works and outline the writing strategies and rhetorical tools you plan to use in order to analyze the text. Look back at the sections on "analysis" and "rhetorical tools" in CEL Ch.6 (169-176) to help you articulate your response. From this proposal, a reader should be able to understand that
- 2. you are using ethical decision-making skills to plan your analysis. In other words, the proposal needs to show that you are thinking carefully about your own point of view and planning to remain even as you are analyzing a text that represents other perspectives. Length and Formatting Format : Typed, double-spaced, submitted as a word-processing document. 12 point, text-weight font, 1-inch margins. Length : 250 words words (approx. 1 page) Value : This project will be graded out of 20 possible points, and will be be included in the Unit 3 grade for this course. Grading This project will be graded out of 20 possible points, and will be be included in the Unit 3 project grade for this course. Additionally, you must complete a full proposal before your Unit 3 Analysis Essay will be accepted .

Objectives Reiterating what was outlined above, in this proposal, you should Clearly articulate your choices about the issue you are choosing to write about, as well as the communities to whom the issue matters. Demonstrate that you are thinking critically about the texts you have chosen to analyze Show that you understand how to use rhetorical tools and analytical strategies to break down the text and write about how it works. Explain how the text you are choosing to analyze relates to the issue and represents one or more communities invested in the issue Justify your decisions in choosing a text to analyze and focusing on the values of one or more particular communities. Example Sample Proposal The text that I am proposing to analyze is "' Why I Won’t Buy an Ipad,' by Cory Doctorow, published on the BoingBoing website (Links to an external site.)
- 4. in April 2010. In the text, Doctorow effectively uses appeals to logos to achieve his goal of convincing people not to buy an Ipad. The issue at hand in this essay is serious. It is not just about whether consumers should purchase an iPad, but also about Doctorow's worries that Apple and other "big corporations with enormous budgets" are producing "garbage" products that water down technology and make it too easy to consume. The issue of how corporations use technologies to gain control over consumers remains important today. More specifically, we are more concerned than ever with the issue of large technology companies controlling users' purchasing habits through what Doctorow calls "a technical and social infrastructure" that privileges consumer "likes" over quality. As Doctorow himself notes (Links to an external site.) , even ten years after the iPad initially came out, Apple continues to "lock out third parties" from accessing and modifying their technology. Doctorow uses many writing strategies and rhetorical tools to appeal to his readers, who are largely people interested in technology, media, and popular culture according to the BoingBoing website. Most important is his tone: he writes with a very playful, tongue-in-cheek voice as a writer and makes the seriousness of Apple's control over technology seem comically exaggerated. I plan to focus primarily on this use of tone in my analysis, but also show how Doctorow's use of metaphors as well as examples from popular culture (such as in his expression, "the Wal-Martization" of technology) draw in an audience both emotionally and logically. I believe my biggest challenge will be to relate this article back to the larger issue of consumer capitalism, since it will require me to read about how the sales and marketing of the iPad have changed since Doctorow wrote in 2010. Notes on the Sample Proposal Purpose and insight : Notice how this proposal describes a particular text that the
- 5. writer wants to focus on and explains how the writer decided on this text. The writer’s proposal stays focused on the goal of the Analysis Essay: analyzing their chosen text, this article from Cory Doctorow, in a way that breaks down its writing strategies, appeals, and rhetorical tools (voice, appeals to logic and emotion, examples, etc.) Context and description : The writer clearly and concisely explains that their chosen text addresses consumer capitalism and specifically the issue of large technology companies controlling users' purchasing habits through a technical and social infrastructure based on poor quality products. Organization and Structure : The writer’s proposal offers a coherent account of the text they will analyze, the issue that the text addresses, and their plan for analyzing the text. From their proposal, it is possible to see the organization their Analysis Essay will take, with the author's (Doctorow's) voice and use of examples and metaphors as the main ideas the writer will pursue. Consideration of Other Perspectives : The writer mentions that this topic of consumer technology is important to an audience of technophiles (people who love technology) as well as to the average consumer. The writer, however, might also refer here to other articles or knowledge that they have develop about this issue from further reading. Writing Strategies and Rhetorical Tools : The writer directly describes “voice” (CEL p. 173) as one of the main strategies for analysis they want to use. They also describe the text's "appeals to emotions" (CEL p. 172). The writer shows that they have read and understand the appeals and other writing strategies described in the Strategies for Analysis section in CEL Ch. 6
- 6. Evidence : The writer’s proposal uses summary of Doctorow's article to provide specific evidence of their claims that the article successfully appeals to the audience of BoingBoing. The writer also could describe the audience in more detail by doing more research about BoingBoing through other stories written on the site. Also keep in mind that direct quotes from the text work well here in addition to summary in order to make the writer's evidence more precise and specific. Conventions and correctness : The writer uses complex sentences, writes clear paragraphs, and provides appropriate details that all make their proposal clear and easy to understand. There also are no grammar or sentences issues that distract from the clarity of their message.
