Do your International Programs Provide True Value to Students_ 4 Questions to...
Overview - S.A.
1. OVERVIEW
Reaching out to UAlbany students about studying abroad
There should be more events dedicated to studying abroad – the study
abroad fair could be inconvenient to those who aren’t around during those
hours and did not hear about it because they do not go into the LCs
o Big enough department that they can have a block party type of event
where students can learn more about going abroad
We can use the school’s mascot (in international attire?) to catch students
attention and direct them towards the study abroad office/website
o Have him near the fountain (big crowd) or by the podium
Have giveaways at events and promote them via social media
o Hold “pick your program” events where they have informationals on
different countries so they can learn more about what to expect living
in e.g. UK, Spanish-speaking countries, French-speaking, Italy, etc.
o Follow-up events for health/safety abroad, course approval seminars,
pre-departure meetings & welcome back events the following
semester
Some students are unaware that we have a study abroad office – we can have signs
around campus saying (Study Abroad office this way)
o Also if we have abroad advisors it would be good for them to be
promoted
UAlbany can start a peer assistance group like Middle Earth; so prospective
students can reach out to past-studiers for advice on all steps of the process.
(Or can do this with a club)
o This is will make it more beneficial for post-studiers to come to these
types of events so that they can build a relationship with those who
are interested in similar programs – very helpful so that they can
answer any questions during this pre-departure process
Some majors can not study abroad if they want to graduate on time –
UAlbany should help find accommodating solutions for them and help them
find programs that will keep them on track
o Find programs that are interchangeable with required courses and
have professor in all departments promote them
Make it more beneficial for post-studiers to get involved
Some schools offer Peer Advisor internship programs so that recent studiers
can inspire their peers with their study abroad experiences
Others had post-study workshops of how to Market Your Study Abroad
Experience - include skills assessment, resume writing, interviewing and
what to add about your abroad experiences
o Or have a blog about how to include this information so it is
readily available for students
2. Have an event the following semester for students who just returned
We can make flyers like the “Most UAlbany students…” have it related to
study abroad with the website and office location on them
Promote the advantage that studying abroad has on ones resume & post-
abroad workshops that can help students add these points to their resume
They can make the website more interactive - they have the location map so they
can use that as the home page so that students can start narrowing down their
search by country, semester, major, etc.
‘Taking the first step” where you enter name, email, mobile number (where
they can send updates/program information about those you are interested
in), also enter where do you want to go/when
o Once you show interest in a particular program or country they
should send you updates of what is going on in that country in the
next few months or during your stay – this will give students a chance
to research events and pack accordingly
They can use social media to promote other SUNY programs so that they
will do the same with Albany’s programs
They could also speak in more classes – only had one class that they
spoke about study abroad
Plattsburgh – put me in touch with a student was apart of the program
that I was using, which gave me an inside source to the program before
leaving. They also sent me emails of some other students who were going
through the program the same time as me, which was a way to connect &
get to know others before leaving
They can make better use of Pinterest to inspire students with either traveling
quotes, pictures of locations they offer studying in, tips of how to use your study
abroad experience in job interviews, ways of college students to save money while
abroad
Need to publicize more so that they get more followers this is a good way to
update students with general study abroad information
Have a photo contest and make their own Instagram account & Snapchats to
students who give mobile number for abroad events
If they get more students involved, they would have better outreach to new
students. If they have a friend associated with the club or peer advisement group,
the word will spread and more people will join in and not feel so lost looking for
information. Also by having more students involved, they will have less stress
because it is a tiny office.
3. More Campus Involvement!!! – Global Ambassadors
UB website is all about post studiers experiences; it makes it more relatable
and easier to reach out.
Cortland has a website dedicated to ‘Life After Study Abroad’- where they
have a section where they an entry form ‘want to go abroad again’
o http://www.lifeafterstudyabroad.com/
o They have Cortland Study Abroad Promoter – train students from the
International Programs staff to help develop presentation skills - then
visit classes to promote the programs and unique experience abroad
with other interested students
o Have a Block Party Event for study abroad
o They offer Study Abroad 101 – Information Sessions every
Tuesday/Friday
Have students keep blogs of their international experiences
New Paltz has different types of fairs – study abroad, romance languages
(where people talk to native of those languages), volunteer abroad fair,
scholarship session, international education week
http://www.lifeafterstudyabroad.com/ - Study Abroad Increases
Professional Job Prospects
Rutgers tweets #StudyAbroadTrivia weekly and give prizes to winners (cups,
shirts)
On website, have mascot walking (or dancing) back and forth in International Attire
or have him jump into pictures where students have taken abroad
- Print out flyers ‘Most UAlbany students...’ print pictures that students took or
of country in general and have them find the mascot within the picture – or
on kiosk
o Photo contests
- With an interactive video have him hiding around and then you can click on
him when he is in the destination that you are interested in - like the
‘Microsoft paperclip’ the mascot can be there to direct you throughout the
site/video/app
They now have the UAlbany App that they can add a section for study abroad
Some schools have ‘look books’ of their programs that semester
http://issuu.com/ruabroad/docs/00410_study_abroad_fall_brochure_fi
Student photos, link to website and Facebook, scholarships, steps to apply,
divided by country with picture on the side
- Printed look books that include statements from students’ experiences and
photo contest winners
Sampling of food from the ‘countries’ at the ‘pick your path’ events or in campus
center
4. Reach out to other students by advertising that any SUNY and NON-SUNY can
participate in our programs. So UAlbany students will tell their other friends to
apply. Tell Your Friends Link
Some schools offer Introduction to Study Abroad courses (2 credit course)
taught by a Study Abroad Advisor – an opportunity to consider questions, issues,
and challenges that will be part of the study abroad experience
Meet with an advisor based upon program interest
Questionnaire on website so it can help students narrow down their options –
how long do you want to study? What is your price point? Do you want to be
with other UAlbany students – information session where you can plan your
travels with students from your school
On actual kiosk – (Do they want a study abroad kiosk section with a number of
kiosks, that requires advertisement around it?)
Goofy aspect: have mascot as the mouse and helps you pick where you want to start
looking or popping up in the images – he can be there to help them go through the
process and can even be the narrator
Have a quiz to find out ‘what study abroad option is right for you’
o What type of experience do you want out of studying abroad
New language, international friends, host family/dorm stay,
classrooms with American students or only natives,
- Connect with our students or advisors by going to our Facebook page
Have the benefits of studying – beneficial words floating around while they pass
through of photos during the ideal stage
Learning Beyond the Classroom, Engage in the culture, International study
experience, Friends from across the globe
On paper – have pictures of the location (students pictures)
- Have informationals according to that country and promote them there, or
direct them to kiosk to find out more information – facts of what makes each
country unique
- They can create a quiz on paper too and results can help them narrow down
what to look for when beginning the application process
When you click on country, it will show – cuisine, highlights from that country:
Spain – running of the bulls, etc., customs, lifestyle, what to expect when staying
there
5. Sectioned off by what type of program it is – classroom based, field research,
internship, lab research or service learning; can have different paperwork saying
what locations have each type of program
Testimonials from past students offering assistance to those who are interested in
their experiences
Pictures, contact information, what program they used and how the overall
experience was, highlight of their trip, would they go back
If they did not come from UAlbany – what school did they come from
Selfies around the world – having something Albany related while they are
talking pictures abroad – if they give out t-shirts during orientation then they
can photograph themselves in landmark destinations with their signature
Albany attire
On kiosk: display of pictures from past travel experiences or stock photos of
locations – slideshow -> input data so you can get alerts from the options you have
selected – the study abroad office can follow up with you and send you info
regarding your selections – upcoming events, what life is like there from the eyes of
a local (web research) or eyes of a student
-Use of information only; have informational meetings about programs and
advertise them on kiosk
- Have it as a display of information and then you take a number to meet with an
advisor
