1. Over Coming Temptation James 1: 1-27 Text: Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
5. Lesson Outline: 1. PATIENCE IN TEMPTATION A. Maturing in Our Trial B. The Blessing for Faithfulness 2. PICTURE OF TEMPTATION A. The Source of Temptation B.The Word of Truth 3. POWER OVER TEMPTATION A. Doers of the Word B. Pure Religon
6. Scripture Jas 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Jas 1:3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Jas 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
7. Scripture Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: Jas 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
8. Scripture Jas 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Jas 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: Jas 1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. Jas 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
9. 1.Patience In Temptation A. Maturing in Our Trials vs. 2-8 James begins by greeting his brothers with the word “joy.” The last word of verse 1 is translated “greeting”. It is also the same root word used in verse 2 to describe the life of the believer: a life of “joy”.
10. 1.Patience In Temptation A. Maturing in Our Trials vs. 2-8 Thus we see that Christian joy is founded and established in God, not in the experiences of life. So he says “count it all joy” when we “fall into” or encounter, trials. The word for “trials” is also used in 1:13,14.
11. 1.Patience In Temptation A. Maturing in Our Trials vs. 2-8 temptations — not in the limited sense of allurements to sin, but trials or distresses of any kind which test and purify the Christian character. Compare “tempt,” that is, try, Gen_22:1 . Some of those to whom James writes were “sick,” or otherwise “afflicted” ( Jam_5:13 ). Every possible trial to the child of God is a masterpiece of strategy of the Captain of his salvation for his good.
12. 1.Patience In Temptation A. Maturing in Our Trials vs. 2-8 Thus, the temptation in itself becomes a source of “all joy” because we know that God is going to use that temptation to bring us to full maturity in Him (Colossians 1:28).
13. 1.Patience In Temptation A. Maturing in Our Trials vs. 2-8 Note that “divers” (various) trials are used to accomplish this work of God. God is not the originator of these trials and He does not allow Satan to take advantage of His children through these trials.
