3. JAMES 1:12-
1512Â
Blessed is the one who perseveres
under trial because, having stood the
test, that person will receive the
crown of life that the Lord has
promised to those who love him.
13Â
When tempted, no one should say,
âGod is tempting me.â For God cannot
be tempted by evil, nor does he
tempt anyone;
4. JAMES 1:12-
1514Â
but each person is tempted when
they are dragged away by their
own evil desire and enticed.
15Â
Then, after desire has conceived, it
gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is
full-grown, gives birth to death.
6. LUKE 4:1-13
1Â
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the
Jordan and was led by the Spirit into
the wilderness,
2Â
where for forty days he was tempted
by the devil. He ate nothing during
those days, and at the end of them he
was hungry.
7. LUKE 4:1-13
3Â
The devil said to him, âIf you are the
Son of God, tell this stone to become
bread.â
4Â
Jesus answered, âIt is written: âMan
shall not live on bread alone.
5Â
The devil led him up to a high place
and showed him in an instant all the
kingdoms of the world.
8. LUKE 4:1-13
6Â
And he said to him, âI will give you all
their authority and splendor; it has
been given to me, and I can give it to
anyone I want to.
7Â
If you worship me, it will all be
yours.â
8Â
Jesus answered, âIt is written:
âWorship the Lord your God and serve
him only.
9. LUKE 4:1-13
9Â
The devil led him to Jerusalem and
had him stand on the highest point of
the temple. âIf you are the Son of
God,â he said, âthrow yourself down
from here.
10Â
For it is written: ââHe will command
his angels concerning you to guard
you carefully;
10. LUKE 4:1-13
11Â Â
they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot
against a stone.
12Â
Jesus answered, âIt is said: âDo not
put the Lord your God to the test.â[
â
13Â
When the devil had finished all this
tempting, he left him until an
opportune time.
14. LUKE 4:1-13
3Â
The devil said to him, âIf you are the
Son of God, tell this stone to become
bread.â
4Â
Jesus answered, âIt is written: âMan
shall not live on bread alone.
5Â
The devil led him up to a high placeÂ
and showed him in an instant all theÂ
kingdoms of the world.Â
22. Heâs looking to give Jesus a shortcut,
and one of the ways that Satan will
tempt, and test, and try us as a
church and you individually, as well
as your family, is to try and give you
a shortcut,
23. something that God intends for you,
but itâll be hard, and Satan wants to
offer you that same thing if you will
simply worship him.
24. Satan will come against you, the
demons will come against you, the
temptation will come against you,
and even if you hold your ground
and are steadfast and resistant,
25. it is not that you will live the rest of
your life without temptation, trial,
and trouble, that, in fact, Satan will
seek another opportunity where you
are vulnerable.
29. A LIFE WITH JESUSA LIFE WITH JESUS
IS WARIS WAR
30. A life with Jesus is war. Satan hates
Jesus, and if you are with Jesus, he
hates you. The war that Satan has
declared on Jesus, if you are walking
with Jesus, he sees you as, in every
way, complicit with Jesus and an
enemy of his.
31. And this war, this battle, this cosmic
conflict started in the heavens
before you and I even existed.
32. This alone is one of the unique
claims of Christianity that sets us
apart from all other religions.
Most every other religion says we
are essentially a good person, not
flawed and broken, and that through
good works, religion, and effort,
33. we can improve ourselves. The Bible
says that our condition is such that
we cannot fix ourselves, we cannot
serve ourselves, we cannot save
ourselves.
34. We need someone to come on a
rescue mission to save us from who
we are and what weâve done.
35. One of the great things that the
enemy does is proclaim a myth of
religion. The myth of religion is that
there is a way to grow without
coming to the Lord Jesus.
36. He remains victorious and he, in
every way, avoids sin. Jesus is
worthy of following, he is worthy of
imitating, he is worthy of emulating,
and my first point is that this war
against Jesus includes anyone who is
walking alongside Jesus.
38. Temptation is not sin. Just because
youâre tempted doesnât mean youâre
ungodly. God was tempted in this
instance. Just because you are
struggling does not mean that you
are necessarily spiritually weak.
39. Being tempted is not equal to being
defeated. Being tempted is an
opportunity for victory; it is not an
indication of defeat. Temptation and
sin are different. Temptation is an
opportunity to sin, but temptation is
not, in and of itself, sin.
40. WHEN YOU ACT IN YOUR
TEMPTATION FOR GOD,
THAT IS VICTORY,
BUT WHEN YOU ACT FOR SATAN,
THEN YOU ARE A VICTIM.
41. There will be times when your
physical energy levels are low.
Youâve been working too much,
youâre stressed, itâs finals week,
youâre on the road, youâve been sick,
youâve got an illness.
42. Your body life energy is depleted.
Youâre hungry. Youâll get hit when
youâre isolated.
43. When you are hungry, isolated and
tired, then go to Jesus.
45. Jesus was tempted, and the one
who saw him tempted the most was
a guy named James. James not only
declares that Jesus is without sin,
but James was there to see the
entire life and ministry of Jesus.
48. LUKE 4:1-13
11
they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot
against a stone.
12
Jesus answered, âIt is said: âDo not
put the Lord your God to the test.â[
â
13
When the devil had finished all this
tempting, he left him until an
opportune time.
49. JAMES 1:12-
1512
Blessed is the one who perseveres
under trial because, having stood the
test, that person will receive the
crown of life that the Lord has
promised to those who love him.
13
When tempted, no one should say,
âGod is tempting me.â For God cannot
be tempted by evil, nor does he
tempt anyone;
51. When temptation comes, itâs like a
sporting event, itâs like a game, itâs
like a match, itâs an opportunity. Itâs
where you take the field, and maybe
itâs Satan, demons, or whoeverâs
involved, they take the field,
52. and itâs a temptation, itâs a collision,
itâs a conflict.
54. When temptation comes, you can
win. You can defeat your
temptation. You can remain
steadfast. And all of this is by the
grace of God through the power of
the Holy Spirit.
55. God does not allow any temptation
to come that you canât handle.
God never allows a team to take the
field that you canât beat.
56. What that means is, practically, the
reason that you are in the
circumstance youâre in now might
be that youâre finally mature enough
and strong enough to handle that..
57. We donât want you to see it as a
discouragement but an
encouragement.
58. The reason you may be facing
something hard today is because
youâre finally ready for it.
And we want you to take that as a
great opportunity.
61. JAMES 1:12-
1514
but each person is tempted when
they are dragged away by their
own evil desire and enticed.
15
Then, after desire has conceived, it
gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is
full-grown, gives birth to death.
68. God doesnât tempt you. God will use
the temptation as a trial to test and
grow you, but God doesnât tempt
you. Godâs not trying to get you into
trouble.
69. JAMES 1:12-
1512
Blessed is the one who perseveres
under trial because, having stood the
test, that person will receive the
crown of life that the Lord has
promised to those who love him.
13
When tempted, no one should say,
âGod is tempting me.â For God
cannot be tempted by evil, nor does
he tempt anyone;
71. Godâs not trying to get you into sin.
And so just because circumstances
are lined up doesnât mean through
that ordination it was the Lord. It
might be the enemy.
73. Thereâs orientation, and this is
where a lot of us who go to college
and get very fancy with our blaming
God. God didnât orient you with an
appetite toward sin. God didnât
make you as a fish who desires bad
bait.
74. Because of sin, folly, rebellion, our
desires, our appetites, even our
orientations tend to gravitate
toward sin, folly, rebellion, and
death, toward desiring the wrong
bait and toward biting down on the
hook.
75. GOD IS NOTGOD IS NOT
TEMPTED,TEMPTED,
DOES NOT TEMPT,DOES NOT TEMPT,
BUTBUT RATHER CAMERATHER CAME
TO BE TEMPTEDTO BE TEMPTED
LIKE USLIKE US
77. When you are tempted, you can run
to Jesus. Fully God, fully man, but
he was tempted as we are tempted.
He suffered as we suffer. He is a God
who is sympathetic. He is a God who
relates to us. He is a God who is
merciful. Thatâs what it says.
79. JAMES 1:12-
1514Â
but each person is tempted when
they are dragged away by their
own evil desire and enticed.
15Â
Then, after desire has conceived, itÂ
gives birth to sin; and sin, when it isÂ
full-grown, gives birth to death.
82. How about those of you whoâve
already gotten your sin pregnant,
and itâs birthed death? Thatâs why
Jesus was born to die. We give birth
to sin, and then sin brings us death.
83. Jesus is born to live without sin, to
die for our sin, so that through his
death, is birthed our life.
See, through our sin, we birth
death. Through Jesusâ death, he
births our life.
84. And for those of you that have
already crossed that line, youâre like
the athlete whoâs quit, youâre like
the dumb fish whoâs already bit
down without paying attention to
the hook and been reeled in.
85. For those of you who areâones who
have already been messing around
with your sin and got it pregnant,
you say, âWhat do I do? Is it too
late?â No. Jesus lived without sin
and died so that those who live with
sin can put their sin to death.
86. This is where we all need Jesus, and
this is where we run to Jesus and we
come to Jesus.
88. Some of you, right now, youâre
trying to control your temptation.
What you need to do is kill your
temptation. Since Jesus died for
your sin, you can put your sin to
death. And thatâs what we want for
you. Thatâs what Jesus wants for
you.
90. There is an opportunity for blessing
if we will learn what God is trying to
do in us through temptation.â
91. Thereâs an internal blessing where
we have a clear conscience and we
realize, âI really do belong to Jesus,
and I have changed, and I am
changing.â
92. Thereâs an external blessing where
our life starts to go better because
of the choices we make out of the
relationship that we have with
Jesus.
94. Other people are suffering, other
people are struggling, and they donât
know what to do with it. They donât
know who to talk to about it and we,
by the grace of God, do.
95. We know to talk to Jesus, we know
to look to Jesus, we know to learn
from Jesus, and that gives us a
reason to rejoice.
96. Everyone is going to be tempted and
the Christian knows why theyâre
tempted, the Christian knows how
theyâre tempted, the Christian
knows what God is doing through
their temptation and the blessing
that awaits them.
