Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
3. Wikipedia definition
Love is an emotion of strong affection and personal
attachment.
Love is also said to be a virtue representing all of human
kindness, compassion and affection – ‘the unselfish loyal
benevolent concern for the good of another’
4. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it
does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not
dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not
easily angered, it keeps no record of
wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but
rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres
6. Exodus 20:1-6
And aGod spoke all these words, saying,
2 b“Iam the LORD your God, who brought you out
of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
3 c“You shall have no other gods before1 me.
4 d“You shall not make for yourself a carved
image, or any likeness of anything that is in
heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or
that is in the water under the earth. 5 eYou shall
not bow down to them or serve them, for I
the LORD your God am a jealous God, gvisiting the
iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third
and the fourth generation of those who hate
me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands2 of
those who love me and keep my
commandments.
7. Mark 12:28-31
Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the
Lord is one. Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your mind and with
all your strength.' The second is this:
'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
There is no commandment greater
than these
10. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son,
that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were
still sinners, Christ died for us.
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I
who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the
flesh I live by faith in the Son of God. who loved me and gave
himself for me.
Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the
great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our
trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have
been saved—
1 John 4:9-11 In this the love of God was made manifest among
us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live
through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he
loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11. Love does not save us, Jesus
saves us and that is love. Love is the
result of being saved.
So as Christians we are to loves
others. While that is very difficult at
times, it's very possible with the help
of the Holy Spirit and through the
process of sanctification.It is
through this process that we
become more like Christ!
12. Be together, share your joy and sorrow, understand each
other, provide space to each other, but always be there for
each others need. And surely love will blossom to strengthen
your relationship with your matter of affection.
