ShiftyourMusic is a mobile app that allows users to play their music preferences in public spaces. It analyzes users' music tastes and plays suitable songs for those nearby. The app faces challenges in handling multiple users and filtering by music genre. It targets individuals and businesses, and plans to generate revenue from app download fees and monthly business subscriptions, while offering reduced iTunes prices. The founder's vision is to personalize music even in offline venues.

These are the slides for a talk I gave in UX Cambridge 2015. A case study about the considerations that need to be taken into account when designing experiences that involve music delivered through multiple channels, working with a geographically dispersed team. I focus on a variety of products that aim to provide a range of services - from streaming and downloading digital music to creating new radio experiences, all delivered through different platforms: radio, responsive, mobile and wearables.

Neighbourhoods and the social communities surrounding these spaces have previously provided vital networks for support (Riger and Lavrakas 1981). They have forged strong ties, fostering a sense of belonging and a feeling of security for those that exist within them (Kavanaugh and Patterson 2001). The transient and disparate nature of many current societies, means that few of these communities still exist, and few of these connections have been continued (Putnam 2001). Despite this tethering of social ties, the need for a collective communal identity remains, and the desire to belong is constant (Baumeister and Leary 1995). What is now absent in many modern societies is a means to best facilitate these human requirements and social needs. The SoundBITE application is proposed as a potential design solution that aims to encourage a more engaging social environment through interactive and mobile networking technologies. It provides a means to facilitate improved social networks within public settings, and assist in developing strong ties that might look towards recreating the now lacking community and neighbourhood interactions.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”. All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
