Four trends in translational genomics are identified for 2011: 1) Next generation sequencing will see continued growth in equipment, consumables, and service companies like Pacific Biosciences and Complete Genomics. 2) Cloud computing will provide large computing resources but ease-of-use will be important for bioinformatics, with opportunities for small businesses to provide value-added services like Amazon. 3) Team science through large collaborative projects involving multiple institutes like NCI’s CGA and TARGET initiatives. 4) Social networks combining genomics and pop culture through sites like patientslikeme.com and 23andme, with pioneering work linking social networks and genetics.
