Out Innovating The Innovators! Michael J. Stickler
Today, Business is neither Stable or Predictable!
… and it never will be again!!!
Today, Business is about One Thing… Customers: Identifying, Acquiring and Retaining them!
What It Will Take to Keep Me As A Customer: ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Business Week August 28, 2000
Two Fundamental Rules! ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
“ Empowered People Take Care of Customers!”
To Empower People you must turn them ON!! NOT TURN THEM OFF!
Empowered People are Naturally Innovative!
“ If it’s not broke don’t fix it…”
“ Continuous Improvement is the way to Go…”
Continuous Improvement is getting a little bit better every day!
“ Continuous Improvement is a Waste of Time!!!”
At best… Continuous Improvement will keep you competitive?
Being competitive means… that Customers still have a choice… and it may not be doing business with you!
Innovation is about being DOMINATE!!!
Innovation is the COOL STUFF that when you see it you say WOW!!! I sure wish that I had thought of that!
Innovation is transformational and substantial not incremental!!
Continuous Improvement is Innovations Worst Nightmare!
Why? Simple! The time that you spend working on Continuous Improvement is time that you can’t spend on Innovation!
Continuous Improvement is too SLOW!!!
In order to DOMINATE you must do things in a significantly different manner than your competitors, especially in the eyes of your customers!
“ There is no use in trying,” said Alice. “One can’t believe impossible things.” “ I dare say you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age, I always did if for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
You must over come the dominate influence of Kindergarten!
The problem is seldom getting new, innovative ideas into your mind, but rather how to get the old ones out! Innovation requires learning how to forget!
Forces For Change: ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
You must create a culture ( Revolution ) where it is natural for People to be Empowered!
Innovation will not happen in a… low-trust, bottlenecked communication, six-layer organization!
A Basic Assumption “ With Every Pair of Hands . . .” “ . . . You Get a Free Brain!” Robby Stewart
INFORMATION means EMPOWERMENT
AUTHORITY means EMPOWERMENT
Taking Care of Customers means EMPOWERMENT
PROBLEM SOLVING means EMPOWERMENT
“ WASTOLOGY” The Science of Waste Identification!
“ When the waste becomes bad enough, the waste is no longer in the company…… the company is the waste”
We must reach a universal understanding of what waste is! “ waste does not process anything, nor does it add value”
Typical Business Non-Value Added versus Value Added Non-Value Added 70% Value Added 30% Non-Value Added = Waste + Cost Added
Improvement!!! ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
A Problem Occurs! Superficial Improvement “For the time being, lets do this…” “Now you know we’ve got to…” “We’ve been doing it like this…” “No one has objected to the way we do this.”
A Problem Occurs! Fundamental Improvement Problem Gets Solved Eventually
A Problem Occurs! Earth Shattering Problem Gets Solved NOW!
True and Complete Problem Solving Requires Innovation Daily ! So Start… NOW!
“ Start out fast…Keep trying to pick up speed… leave skid marks.” “ You need Radicals, Rebels, Revolutionaries, people who howl at the moon.” Tom Peters 1995
Innovation Rules ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
INNOVATE or DIE!
Remember… If you do more of the same things -expect more of the same results. If you want different results -you have to do things different. If you want significantly different results -you have to do things significantly different!
If your not trying stuff, if your not doing different things, your odds of being able to determine if something will work is ZERO!
“ Never be afraid to try something new, remember the Ark was built by amateurs and the Titanic was built by professionals.” Unknown
You Can Always Serve As A Bad Example! Also Remember, You Are Never A Complete Failure…
Be an Innovator, Create A New Revolution… Every Day!
