Mobile in 2015
3
Mobile is a constantly shifting landscape and there are many
possibilities on the horizon, so we decided to go to the experts,
and asked our team where they think mobile is heading in 2015.
The 4 topics Piotr, Harsha, Elliotte, and David all touched on were:
Wearables Flat design Smart homes/IoT The app market

FLAT DESIGN
4
After the advent of 3d design in apps, flat design has taken over
as the reigning champion. This trend is expected not only to
continue, but also to evolve.

THE EXPERTS TALK: FLAT DESIGN
David
“Flat design is going to stick around for a while because of
how prevalent multiple resolution devices are, as well as its
aesthetically pleasing nature.”

THE EXPERTS TALK: FLAT DESIGN
“The use of color, non-flamboyant typography, and
focused design language can be seen across all
platforms, with very similar rules at their foundations.
Google is starting to build on top of flat design by adding
depth and shadows.”
Piotr
David

aesthetically pleasing nature.”

WEARABLE TECH
7
Wearables are still regarded as largely experimental, with
problems surfacing in both hardware and software. Our team
acknowledged that breakthroughs are needed for wearable tech to
become mainstream, and look forward to continued
experimentation.

“Wearables are still a one way stream of information, and
nobody’s yet mastered how to make it two-way to
communicate back, though the Apple Watch comes
closest.”

THE EXPERTS TALK: WEARABLE TECH
“Wearables are still a one way stream of information, and
nobody’s yet mastered how to make it two-way to
communicate back, though the Apple Watch comes
closest.”
David
Elliotte
“The success of smart watches will depend on finding
killer apps for them, with both developers and users
figuring out the answer to the question: what value will
wearables add that you don’t have, but want?”
© SOURCEBITS 2015. A GLOBO COMPANY. 10
THE EXPERTS TALK: WEARABLE TECH
Piotr
“Wearables have not been a huge hit right away. Its a
niche market, and what they’ve showed us so far is not
revolutionary. Eventually they will be super successful, but
they will need a breakthrough product to do that.”

THE EXPERTS TALK: WEARABLE TECH
“Wearables could have a great influence in the coming
years, especially with respect to health. With
implementation of wearables, what was not possible in the
past can become an everyday reality.”
Piotr
Harsha

niche market, and what they’ve showed us so far is not

SATURATED APP MARKET
12
With the App Store and the Google Play store both hitting over 1
million apps this past year, there’s no question the app stores are
simply flooded. This frustrating state of affairs needs to change in
order for developers to get their work effectively discovered and
for users to find the app that gets what they need done.
© SOURCEBITS 2015. A GLOBO COMPANY. 13
“There is literally an app for everything, so who’s going to
win in the marketplace depends on who can do it better,
who can do it faster, more efficiently, more beautifully.”

“There is literally an app for everything, so who’s going to
win in the marketplace depends on who can do it better,

David
Elliotte
“There are so many apps and most are going unnoticed
because the quality is low and the app stores are so
saturated. Making the app stand out and fit the audience
you’re targeting should be a huge priority for developers.”

SMART HOMES/THE INTERNET OF THINGS
Smart homes and the interconnectivity of smart devices are
approaching, but there are several stumbling blocks, mainly
money and inconvenience. Smart homes will have to demonstrate
their value to become ubiquitous and have real staying power.
© SOURCEBITS 2015. A GLOBO COMPANY. 16
THE EXPERTS TALK: SMART HOMES/IoT
David
“For most homes in America, smart homes and
interconnected devices are an expensive upgrade, one that
involves replacing lightbulbs, changing wifi, etc, to make it
all work.”
© SOURCEBITS 2015. A GLOBO COMPANY. 17
THE EXPERTS TALK: SMART HOMES/IoT
“As price points go down and the real value proposition
of them are realized, the tangible benefits of smart home
technology will be more obvious.”
David

interconnected devices are an expensive upgrade, one that
involves replacing lightbulbs, changing wifi, etc, to make it

“People are just starting to build systems combining the
newly-released Homekit and mobile devices, and we’ll see
that evolve.”

OTHER: MOBILE PAYMENTS & FOCUSED APPS
David
“Multipurpose apps are done and apps are going to
become more focused than they already are.”

OTHER: MOBILE PAYMENTS & FOCUSED APPS
“Mobile payments are going to be big. Retailers are
exploring the way consumers can sync up their bank
accounts with their phones, so in the future you may not
need to pull out your wallet.”
David
Elliotte
“Multipurpose apps are done and apps are going to
become more focused than they already are.”

OUR EXPERTS’ CONCLUSION?
According to our team members, mobile is clearly moving beyond
being a novelty and becoming an integral part of everyday life. As
Piotr put it: “Mobile is starting to penetrate more and more
avenues - health, home, transportation, etc. Its not a gadget
anymore, but a viable tool to help control aspects of our lives.”
