It moves my soul to experience how those we journey with allow themselves the experience of awakening to more of themselves and a deeper sense of purpose. I often say to our students:

We experience its heartwarming impact on how we live and (un)learn together. A living and (un)learning that is authentic and kind… that is generous… that is honest and transparent… that stretches and encourages… that heals our wounds and edits our old stories. It is a living and (un)learning that allows the student their own unique path… also the tough patches! There is nothing more liberating than >>walking the plank<< of a perception!
Come with me. Experience the unique unfolding of a Change Agent Journey. Students awakening to their inner coach, healer and guide and firing up their entrepreneurial spirit all while assisting and guiding others to do the same.

3. A message from Dave Aabo
Thanks for your interest in WAVES for Development!
Thinking back to pilot program in Lobitos in Feb of 08 - because of the volunteers, staff and ardent supporters - we’ve
come a long way… What a long, strange, trip it’s been! We started as a group of committed, passionate, intelligent
college graduates from around the world with a shared vision: use surfing to make the world a better place.. It has
gone from an idea to implementation. Lives have been transformed. Surfing has been key - for travelers volunteering,
and for community members alike.
Lately, we’ve taken steps to distinguish each of the three legal entities (Peru, Switzerland & US) under the WAVES
banner. WAVES International has a renewed focus of uniting efforts to connect surfing and sustainable development.
I believe the learnings we’ve gleaned from the first 6 years in Peru can benefit other communities and organizations
around the world. We are willing to share and grow together, building a robust network of partnerships.
Some of the things we are most proud of include:
● fostering transformative educational experiences, cultural exchange and surfing in Lobitos, Peru
● the social enterprises and initiatives that WAVES presence in Lobitos has inpsired
● families and young people from Lobitos whole lives are changed forever - like a healthier living environment,
more opportunities for creativity & conservation, more education, and more earning potential!
As one might imagine, there have been challenges along the way - cultural & language differences, changing team
dynamics, and the variable environment of where surfing, volunteering and social impact meet. These have been
opportunities for learning and growth.
The first six years are just the beginning -- going forward we will:
● pivot from starting organizations from scratch in a single community to partnering with multiple grassroots
organizations as an ‘empowerment agent’; helping connect the dots to resources
● send more travelers, funds and organizational/media support to destinations around the world
● partner with like-minded international entities at the highest level
Will you continue the journey with us or like to join in? Please feel free to reach out: dave@wavesfordevelopment.org
4. WAVES in Action: Lobitos, Peru
Over the last 6 years the entire ‘WAVES family’ has focused efforts in establishing WAVES for
Development Peru (WAVES Peru) and delivering programs in Lobitos, Peru. Positive experiences here
showcase the impact, potential and proof of concept. Here are the three main areas of programming:
● Community Outreach: education through English, conservation, & surf classes
● Environmental Health: goal of creating a health supportive environment
● Entrepreneurship Empowerment: generate economic activity that stays in community
In Q1 2014 100% of management responsibility was transferred to the local Lobitos team!
5. Community Outreach:

10. Network of Partnerships: Peru
At WAVES International our philosophy is to help make connections, inspire action and get out of the way.
In Peru, WAVES Peru activities in Lobitos were established through grassroots mobilization. Some
partnerships and great initiatives we’ve worked with, at different levels, via WAVES Peru activities:
● Instituto Peruano de Deporte (IPD) - Federación Nacional de Tabla (FENTA) -
signed agreement with WAVES Peru
● Lobitos Cinema Project // Coast 2 Coast
● Proyecto Iris
● Libros a Lobitos
● “El Art de Surf” w/ Alto Peru // US Embassy // Asociación Sofia Mulanovich
*Please note we are not trying to take credit for these initiatives, but rather, proud to have played a role in their formation or
collective impact. For us, the more success that these initiatives see, bigger overall positive social impact results. To that
end, we look to support them through volunteers, grants and media.
