Data and Application Modernization in the Age of the Cloudredmondpulver
Data modernization is key to unlocking the full potential of your IT investments, both on premises and in the cloud. Enterprises and organizations of all sizes rely on their data to power advanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
Yet the path to modernizing legacy data systems for the cloud is full of pitfalls that cost time, money, and resources. These issues include high hardware and staffing costs, difficulty moving data and analytical processes to cloud environments, and inadequate support for real-time use cases. These issues delay delivery timelines and increase costs, impacting the return on investment for new, cutting-edge applications.
Watch this webinar in which James Kobielus, TDWI senior research director for data management, explores how enterprises are modernizing their mainframe data and application infrastructures in the cloud to sustain innovation and drive efficiencies. Kobielus will engage John de Saint Phalle, senior product manager at Precisely, in a discussion that addresses the following key questions:
When should enterprises consider migrating and replicating all their data assets to modern public clouds vs. retaining some on-premises in hybrid deployments? How should enterprises modernize their legacy data and application infrastructures to unlock innovation and value in the age of cloud computing? What are the key investments that enterprises should make to modernize their data pipelines to deliver better AI/ML applications in the cloud? What is the optimal data engineering workflow for building, testing, and operationalizing high-quality modern AI/ML applications in the cloud? What value does real-time replication play in migrating data and applications to modern cloud data architectures? What challenges do enterprises face in ensuring and maintaining the integrity, fitness, and quality of the data that they migrate to modern clouds? What tools and methodologies should enterprise application developers use to refactor and transform legacy data applications that have migrated to modern clouds
Data storage and networking are no exceptions. Development is moving fast, and tipping points have already tipped: the cloud, nextgen networks, Internet of Things (IoT), innovative le systems, NVMe SSD. These technologies are active today in enterprise data centers and in the public clouds that serve them.
The presentation discusses and introduces cloud computing - its history and present challenges.
It also discusses topical cloud-computing related events.
A data-driven organization has an edge over its competitors. Information is sourced from endless sources with the growing popularity of factors, such as mobility, IoT, and cloud computing. As such, it has become quite a challenging task to manage various data types stored across a variety of repositories.
Today, Enterprise Data Fabric has come up as a crucial tactic for sharing of diverse, distributed, and dynamic records and frictionless access. The strategy provides a robust solution for high-cost and low-value integration cycles. It also meets the increasing demand for information sharing on real-time.
Hadoop was born out of the need to process Big Data.Today data is being generated liked never before and it is becoming difficult to store and process this enormous volume and large variety of data, In order to cope this Big Data technology comes in.Today Hadoop software stack is go-to framework for large scale, data intensive storage and compute solution for Big Data Analytics Applications. The beauty of Hadoop is that it is designed to process large volume of data in clustered commodity computers work in parallel.Distributing the data that is too large across the nodes in clusters solves the problem of having too large data sets to be processed onto the single machine.

Two of the most talked about topics in data management today are Data Fabric and Data Mesh. However, there is a lot of confusion around them. Are they alternative options, or are they complementary? Many organizations are struggling with these questions when trying to modernize their data architecture. Mike Ferguson, Managing Director of Intelligent Business Strategies, will help clear up the confusion by looking at what Data Fabric and Data Mesh are and how they can best be used to help shorten time to value in companies seeking to become data-driven enterprises.
Mike will help address many of your questions, including:
- What is a Data Fabric and Data Mesh, and the business value of each?
- What are the key concepts and capabilities of each, and what do they make possible?
- The implications of decentralizing data engineering, and how do you co-ordinate data product development?
- How can a Data Fabric help in building a Data Mesh?
Following Mike's presentation, we will be joined by Kevin Bohan of Denodo, who will discuss the foundational capabilities you should be putting in place if you are planning on adopting a Data Mesh strategy.
NFRASTRUCTURE MODERNIZATION REVIEW
Analyze the issues
Hardware
Over-running volume of data is a problem that should be addressed by data management and storage management. Data is being constantly collected but poorly analyzed which leads to excessive amounts of data occupying storage and delay in operations which inevitably affect production, sales and profits. If this remains unresolved, current data may have to be moved to external storage and recovered if needed. There is also the risk of data not being encoded into computers and thus will remain in manual state. This can be a case of redundant or extraneous data that is not yet cleaned and normalized by operations managers with the guidance of IT. This situation is known as data overload where companies actually use only a fraction of the data they capture and store. Many companies simply hoard data to make sure that they are readily available when they are needed. This negatively impacts the Corporation when assessing data relevance, accuracies and timeliness (Marr, 2016).
Software
The Largo Corporation (LC) seems to running on an enterprise resource planning system that is probably as long as 20 years old. Initially, LC has had success with the old system because they were able to establish themselves in various industries such as healthcare, media, government, etc. But due to various concerns, the Corporation is currently running on an outdated system because it is unable to provide services that keeps the Corporation a float. The LC is losing revenue and customers. Complete data without analysis is invaluable because, no information and insights can be produced that will support decisions. Customer data should lead to the best marketing and sales campaigns. The Corporation needs to recognize its weaknesses and implement changes to their software by incorporating funding for a new system that is reliable, secure, and has the ability to run on integrated systems; all of which will streamline data organization and analysis for the enterprise. (Rouse, n.d).
Network/Telecommunications
The network that was built in the 1980’s has become slow and unreliable affecting business operations. The problems caused by the old network are; lack of integration and communication between departments affecting the work flow, supply vs. demand, and inability to analyze data to carry out these operations. The Corporation should have taken into consideration the growth of the company by expanding and upgrading their networks along with their services. They should also take into consideration the number of departments, the number of users and their skill level, storage and bandwidth, and budget (Rasmussen, 2011). The current network does not allow employees to connect on their mobile devices which restricts flexibility and places limitations on productivity and portability.

Information systems infrastructure consists the procedures of Software, Hardware, telecommunications, Networks managed by various specialists. Information systems are complementary networks like an organization that transcend information. Mainly it has 7 main components like Hardware platforms, Operating Systems, Software applications etc.
Information is data given meaning usually through some form of processing and combination with other data. Data is one of individual fact. An information system that collects, processes, manipulates, stores and communicates data according to a set of rules. It may include a methodology for update and feedback.
Usually, we can see information systems as two types. 1. Simple information systems 2. Complex Information systems.
A simple information system can be represented by Rolodex of names, addresses and telephone numbers
A complex information system could be a computer capable of storing the information on many Rolodexes, plus pictures, likes and dislikes, appointments and correspondence, organizing it for retrieval, a keyboard for input, a screen to view it, a printer for retrieval, a disk drive to store it and software to manage it.
Commonly an information system may only refer to a database management system which handles all the functions of collecting, managing, storing and retrieving the Rolodex information. Commonly today’s technological society, information systems are thought of within the context of the technology such as computers and software, but that need not be a case. As noted earlier, a Rolodex is also an information system
IS Evolution: Technology evaluation has impacted our lives positively over the last two decades so we should expect the same or similar outcomes from the future. If we observe the IT infrastructure evaluation, we can find several implementations from Enterprise computing to Cloud and mobile computing. Due to the implemental changes in Information systems, technology revolution happened over two decades.
Now an estimated 2.3 billion people worldwide using internet access and it became affordable. Technological advancements have had affects in all areas Health, Advertisement, Finance, Entertainment, just anything we can think about.

In 1960s a 5 MB of capacity was acquired a truck and now we can see terabytes of information in our grasp. This is an advancement of information frameworks. Today a huge number of clients are making information regarding content, voice, video and so forth. The association of this information is a major test for a portion of the organizations. Presently we are talking not as far as Gigabytes or Terabytes but rather Zettabyte (1000000000 TB).
So as to deal with this information three noteworthy developing patterns are approaching:
1. Democratization of Data: By making the information fair implies that information ought to be accessible for all. There ...

There ...

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Disconnected Data
We are building the most impressive AI, yet data and data
management is still a landmine of app traps and data silos. The data
fuel that feeds the AI revolution is missing because it is disconnected.
Data Fragmentation
We demand connected, contextualized, networked data to power the
Metaverse, yet data integration and data copies create a mess of
fragmentation.
Knowledge Gap
We cannot make use of the data we even have and the knowledge
gap continues to widen between available enterprise data and
insights from that data.
Point-to-Point Integrations
We continue to manage data as a function of application
requirements, not enterprise requirements, or strategic requirements
- proliferating point-to-point data integrations.
We need to shift our thinking from hardware to software to dataware.
Dataware will form the fabric of the Metaverse. Orbyfy Fabric+.

Drill down
And while data is generated at an exponential pace, the translation
of data to information (the first step) requires an abstraction layer -
the very means and mechanisms of representing the 'physical' by
the 'digital' via a data model. The orchestration of the data model
(data model schema) itself across the organization forms the
biggest hurdle to truly unlocking the value of enterprise data and
everything downstream in terms of insights that can be used for
decisions.
A schema defines how data is organized in a database or
datastore or wherever data is persisted. It forms a model of how
the data is organized. In a relational database, a schema includes
logical constraints like table names, fields, data types, and the
relationships between these entities (i.e. how data points are
organized and connected within a relational database).
The problem with conventional approaches to application
development and downstream analytics and AI, is that most
enterprise organizations have adopted (through no fault of their
own), an application-centric architecture. Data is stuck in
applications and tightly coupled to the applications in which that
data has been generated.

Drill down continued
60-70% of enterprise data never gets used to generate
insights and decisions because it's trapped in rigid
applications.
50% of IT budgets are used just to unlock data from
applications via point-to-point integrations.
Small-to-medium sized businesses use 40 apps on average;
enterprise businesses with 1,000+ employees have 200+
apps generating and consuming data.
It costs $20K to build a relatively simple API, and costs
$100K-$200K to build a relatively complex API interface to
move data between applications (multiply by number of APIs
and interfaces across the enterprise).
Data model schema is tightly coupled to the codebase. The logic
and code that controls how the application interacts with inputs
and outputs - all of that is controlled by the application in the
application layer. In order to change the data model or the
schema, in almost all instances you have to go into the codebase
and change code.
The main takeaway is that for most data across any enterprise,
data resides in applications, and those applications form data silos
in which data models and schema are tightly coupled to the
codebase. This creates not only integration challenges, but what’s
more is the downstream value pipeline of taking data and
translating it to insights is nearly impossible.
This forms a very costly problem:
Now what if data itself could be persisted in an interconnected
data model, networked, contextualized, and always available as a
single-source-of-truth? What if building APIs to connect data was
as simple as low-code queries? What if data no longer lives in
applications but data itself becomes the application?

Agility: A data fabric architecture can provide greater agility than an API
management tool or enterprise service bus middleware because it can
handle a wider range of data types and formats. This means that data
can be accessed and analyzed more quickly, making it easier to develop
and deploy applications and models.
Flexibility: A data fabric architecture can also offer greater flexibility
than API management tools or enterprise service bus middleware, as it
can integrate data from a variety of sources, such as databases, data
lakes, and streaming sources. This enables organizations to be more
responsive to changing business requirements and to scale up or down
as needed.
Scalability: Data fabric architecture can handle large volumes of data
and scale up or down as needed, making it easier to handle the demands
of large-scale AI applications, including large language models.
Unified View of Data: A data fabric architecture provides a unified view
of data across the enterprise, allowing teams to access and analyze data
from a variety of sources more easily. This can enable better
collaboration and faster decision-making.
Advanced Analytical Capabilities: A data fabric architecture can use
advanced analytical techniques such as machine learning and natural
language processing to identify patterns and relationships within the
data. This can enable more sophisticated analysis and modeling, leading
to more accurate predictions and better business outcomes.
While API management tools and enterprise service bus middleware can
provide benefits for managing data and applications in an enterprise
architecture, a data fabric architecture offers some advantages over these
tools.
