Bad breath can have causes that aren't due
to underlying disease. Examples include
poor dental hygiene, dehydration or recently
eating certain foods like onions or garlic.
BAD BREATHE
Bleeding gums can have causes that aren't due
to underlying disease. Examples include
flossing, teeth brushing, chewing tobacco or
cuts/abrasions from foods.
BLEEDING GUMS
Dry mouth refers to a condition in which a
salivary glands in your mouth don’t make
enough saliva to keep your mouth wet. It is often
due to the side effect of certain medication or
aging issue or radiation therapy for cancer.
DRY MOUTH
Periodontitis also called gum disease, is a
serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and,
without treatment, can destroy the bone that supports
your teeth.
GUM DISEASE
Enamel is the first defense for your teeth against
the many different chemicals they’re exposed to
from food and bodily fluids. As a result, it can be
prone to wear and tear. This is referred to as
enamel erosion.
TOOTH EROSION
Tooth decay is the softening of your tooth enamel and
refers to the damage of the structure of the tooth caused
by acids that are created when plaque bacteria break down
sugar in your mouth. If this loss of mineral from the enamel
is left untreated, a cavity, or hole in the tooth, can
eventually occur.
TOOTH DECAY
Dangers of Poor Oral Hygiene
Dentistry is not EXPENSIVE, NEGLECT is ! !
THE TOOTH IS THE
ONLY PART OF THE
BODY…THAT
CANNOT HEAL
ITSELF..!!!
THE GROUNDWORK FOR ALL
HAPPINESS IS ORAL HEALTH …!!!
BE SURE TO VISIT YOUR DENTIST

Oral Hygiene
Instructions:

19
BRUSHING
TECHNIQUE
Start brushing without toothpaste on lower
inside of front teeth for 15-30 seconds.
(most toothpastes contain topical anesthetic
that numbs the tongue and doesn’t
allow to detect if the most prone to tarter
surface has been properly cleaned.)
BRUSHING
METHOD 1
•The inside of the upper and lower for 1
minute.
•The outside (cheek/lip surfaces) of the
upper and lower teeth and biting surfaces
for 1 minute..
BRUSHING
METHOD 2
•When brushing the outside of the
upper back teeth close your mouth
almost all the way and feel the
toothbrush getting al the way to the
back.
•Use a tongue scrapper.
The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com
20
FLOSSING
Placing the floss between the teeth and
under the gum. Clean both sides of the
teeth by pressing to each side forming
the letter “C” and moving the floss up
and down.
RINSING
Rinse with the WATER-PIK, a special irrigating device that
removes plaque from between the teeth and also massages
the gums.
• For a thorough antibacterial rinse use a saturated baking
soda solution or a rinse prescribed by your dentist.
• Use a “Proxa Brush” (a tiny, narrow brush” with toothpaste
to clean large spaces between the teeth).
The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com
21
FLUORIDE
Plain baking soda used on a wet toothbrush
will remove light stains from the teeth.
• Use toothpastes containing fluoride like
Colgate or Crest.. We do not have fluoride
in the water anymore in Calgary.
PRECAUTION 1
Patients with receded gums, exposed
roots are not to use toothpaste for
brushing, as it can cause further ditching
of the surfaces.
PRECAUTION 2
Brushing with water, mouthwash or
baking soda is preferred to help prevent
further erosion on the root surfaces.
CORRECT
BRUSHING
TECHNIQUE
“Correction” is only seen as
“Judgement” to those who love to
sin…

MY DENTIST SAID – I
NEED A CROWN ??
I KNOW IT RIGHT , I SAID
… !!!
SIGNS OF
PERIODONTAL
DISEASE
Early:
• Puffy, red and swollen gums
• Bleeding gums when brushing
and flossing
• Bad breath and/or bad taste
• Vague sensitivity, aching or
itching in the gums.
• Longer looking teeth
• Spaces, that begin to appear
between the teeth
• The condition progresses far
enough, teeth become loose and
you loose the under lining bone
and you can loose teeth.
Advance:
The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com
26
Wrap the ends of the piece of floss around your middle fingers.
• Start with 1 hand, then do the other. Make several loose wraps
around each of your middle fingers until the floss pulls taut.
• However, don’t wrap the floss so tightly that it digs into your skin or
cuts off your circulation. The wrap should feel loose and comfortable
around your fingers.
• If the floss feels like it’s wrapped too tightly, unwind it and try again.
1. Holding the Floss
How to :
‘FLOSS’
The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com
27
Slide the dental floss between your teeth as far down as it goes. Be
gentle when inserting the floss.
• Make a slight rocking motion as you work the floss down between
your teeth.
•Then, slowly slide it below your gums.
• Make sure to get all the way down to your gums when flossing.
Simply sliding the floss down to your gums is not enough. You should
gently massage the floss on the gumline all around each tooth.
2. Cleaning the teeth
How to :
‘FLOSS’

It is often due to the side effect of certain medication or aging issue or radiation therapy for cancer. DRY MOUTH Periodontitis also called gum disease, is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and, without treatment, can destroy the bone that supports your teeth. GUM DISEASE Enamel is the first defense for your teeth against the many different chemicals they’re exposed to from food and bodily fluids. As a result, it can be prone to wear and tear. This is referred to as enamel erosion. TOOTH EROSION Tooth decay is the softening of your tooth enamel and refers to the damage of the structure of the tooth caused by acids that are created when plaque bacteria break down sugar in your mouth. If this loss of mineral from the enamel is left untreated, a cavity, or hole in the tooth, can eventually occur. TOOTH DECAY Dangers of Poor Oral Hygiene Dentistry is not EXPENSIVE, NEGLECT is ! !

  • 18. The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com 18 BRUSH TEETH TWICE A DAY Brush at least twice a day for a minimum of two and a half minutes each time, using a circular motion over the tooth surface. Oral Hygiene Instructions:
  • 19. The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com 19 BRUSHING TECHNIQUE Start brushing without toothpaste on lower inside of front teeth for 15-30 seconds. (most toothpastes contain topical anesthetic that numbs the tongue and doesn’t allow to detect if the most prone to tarter surface has been properly cleaned.) BRUSHING METHOD 1 •The inside of the upper and lower for 1 minute. •The outside (cheek/lip surfaces) of the upper and lower teeth and biting surfaces for 1 minute.. BRUSHING METHOD 2 •When brushing the outside of the upper back teeth close your mouth almost all the way and feel the toothbrush getting al the way to the back. •Use a tongue scrapper.
  • 20. The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com 20 FLOSSING Placing the floss between the teeth and under the gum. Clean both sides of the teeth by pressing to each side forming the letter “C” and moving the floss up and down. RINSING Rinse with the WATER-PIK, a special irrigating device that removes plaque from between the teeth and also massages the gums. • For a thorough antibacterial rinse use a saturated baking soda solution or a rinse prescribed by your dentist. • Use a “Proxa Brush” (a tiny, narrow brush” with toothpaste to clean large spaces between the teeth).
  • 21. The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com 21 FLUORIDE Plain baking soda used on a wet toothbrush will remove light stains from the teeth. • Use toothpastes containing fluoride like Colgate or Crest.. We do not have fluoride in the water anymore in Calgary. PRECAUTION 1 Patients with receded gums, exposed roots are not to use toothpaste for brushing, as it can cause further ditching of the surfaces. PRECAUTION 2 Brushing with water, mouthwash or baking soda is preferred to help prevent further erosion on the root surfaces.

SIGNS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE Early: • Puffy, red and swollen gums • Bleeding gums when brushing and flossing • Bad breath and/or bad taste • Vague sensitivity, aching or itching in the gums. • Longer looking teeth • Spaces, that begin to appear between the teeth • The condition progresses far enough, teeth become loose and you loose the under lining bone and you can loose teeth. Advance:
  • 26. The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com 26 Wrap the ends of the piece of floss around your middle fingers. • Start with 1 hand, then do the other. Make several loose wraps around each of your middle fingers until the floss pulls taut. • However, don’t wrap the floss so tightly that it digs into your skin or cuts off your circulation. The wrap should feel loose and comfortable around your fingers. • If the floss feels like it’s wrapped too tightly, unwind it and try again. 1. Holding the Floss How to : ‘FLOSS’
  • 27. The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com 27 Slide the dental floss between your teeth as far down as it goes. Be gentle when inserting the floss. • Make a slight rocking motion as you work the floss down between your teeth. •Then, slowly slide it below your gums. • Make sure to get all the way down to your gums when flossing. Simply sliding the floss down to your gums is not enough. You should gently massage the floss on the gumline all around each tooth. 2. Cleaning the teeth How to : ‘FLOSS’
