Build your own container-based system with the Moby project Docker Community Edition—an open source product that lets you build, ship, and run containers—is an assembly of modular components built from an upstream open source project called Moby. Moby provides a “Lego set” of dozens of components, the framework for assembling them into specialized container-based systems, and a place for all container enthusiasts to experiment and exchange ideas. Patrick Chanezon and Mindy Preston explain how you can leverage the Moby project to assemble your own specialized container-based system, whether for IoT, cloud, or bare-metal scenarios. Patrick and Mindy explore Moby’s framework, components, and tooling, focusing on two components: LinuxKit, a toolkit to build container-based Linux subsystems that are secure, lean, and portable, and InfraKit, a toolkit for creating and managing declarative, self-healing infrastructure. Along the way, they demo how to use Moby, LinuxKit, InfraKit, and other components to quickly assemble full-blown container-based systems for several use cases and deploy them on various infrastructures.

While the adoption of DevOps makes teams move faster with reduced dependency on central operations, it can constrain teams who lack the skills to self-manage the full application and infrastructure stack. The way to overcome this challenge is creating an internal platform and treating it as a world-class product offering. “Applying product management to internal platforms means establishing empathy with internal consumers (read: developers) and collaborating with them on the design. Platform product managers establish roadmaps and ensure the platform delivers value to the business and enhances the developer experience”, via ThoughtWorks Technology Radar. In this talk, Henning Jacobs will walk you through how Zalando adopted a customer-first mindset with regards to its developer tooling. He will show the effect on developer satisfaction when internal platforms are given the same respect as external product offerings. Henning will furthermore tell his story about how Zalando moved from a classical infrastructure team to a product mindset with strong focus on building a world-class developer experience. Henning shares both their learnings and challenges going through this transition, and the impact it has on the daily life of Zalando’s customers (developers). This talk was given in Aarhus on 4th of June 2019.

Linux is everywhere. Open Source has won! It has not. While Open Source components are all over the place, the big IT players use them to build platforms that are not fully open but designed to lock their users in. The question to ask these days is not: “Are you building on top of open source?”, because everyone is. The question should be: “Do you allow others to rebuild your whole platform?” and “Do you allow others to contribute to it and shape its future?” Sounds utopian? Sovereign Cloud Stack (SCS) tries to do exactly this: Build a network of operators to define common standards together, implement them in a complete, openly developed and fully open source manner and then even collaborate on operating it well — which can be harder than building it. The speaker will discuss the vision behind the the SCS project, how it has build the community and the technology stack, what it has achieved so far and where it will go next.

Microservices, Node, Dapr and more - Part One (Fontys Hogeschool, Spring 2022)

This session does a quick recap of microservices: why do we want them, what problems do they solve and what are the principles around designing and implementing them? The Dapr.io runtime framework for distributed applications is introduced. Dapr provides a sidecar (almost like a personal assistant to a manager) to an application or microservice, a companion process that handles common tasks such as storing and retrieving state, consuming and publishing messages and events, invoking external services and other microservices as well as handling incoming requests. Participants will do a handson lab with Dapr.io and learn how to quickly implement interactions with various technologies, including Redis and MySQL. Node(JS) is introduced – a server side JavaScript-based programming language that can be used well for implementing microservices. Some of the main characteristics of NodeJS are discussed (functional programming, asynchronous flows, NPM package manager) as well as common use cases (handle incoming HTTP requests, invoke REST APIs). In the second lab, Node and Dapr are used together to implement microservices that interact with databases and message brokers and each other – in a decoupled fashion.
