Open source software is defined as computer
software in which the user can modify the
program they are using. This is possible due
to a software license, rather than having a
copyright on the software, which would
     prevent changes from being made.
 Allows the user to modify the software as they
                           please
 Many programs are free to the user
 Programs are made widely available
 More secure than closed source versions of
                          programs
 A lot of support can be offered to the user
                      More reliable
 Bugs don’t always get fixed
 There are many versions of the same
                     application
 Easier for hackers to access codes
 Not the best option for businesses
 Not all products are well supported
Most people generally feel that the pros
outweigh the cons when it comes to Open
Source Software. The fact that it can be
manipulated by the user and the fact that
programs are widely available and usually
free is also appealing to many.
There are many Open Source Software programs
which act as alternatives to copyright software.
                     Here are a few:
 GIMP is an alternative to Photoshop
 Xubuntu is an alternative to Dreamweaver
 Open Office is an alternative to Microsoft
                          Office
 Rhythmbox is an alternative to iTunes
All in all, Open Source Software is a great
option for many people looking to manage
and manipulate programs. They can easily
access many secure programs on the internet
and will likely be pleased with the outcome.
