- The point of this briefing is to provide you a brief introduction of things that I’ve learned while taking the OER class. I am by no means an expert. In fact, I didn’t even know what OER was until JJ sent out an opportunity to take the class so I figured now was as good a time as any to learn. My intent is not to make any experts but simply to share what I’ve learned and provide you some of the resources that I’ve gotten out of the class so you can do some research of your own and see what fits best for you. I’d also like to point out my beautiful picture of a Correctional Unit, which is my shameless plug in for the CJ Department.
- One of the first assignments of the class was to go to YouTube and find a video about OER. This is a short 3 minute video that I found interesting. It really gives a great introduction of what OER is and how it can help. What I like best about the concept of OER is the ability to share and collaborate with people in your field all throughout the world. In theory, if you find a presentation that you really like for your class then you can either take it as is or adjust it to meet the needs of your class and there is no need to get permission from the originator because it is already given within the license.
- Another assignment we did was to publish our own work and properly license it for others to use. So, for example, if you’re teaching a class on motorcycle safety you can go to Wikimedia Commons look through photos and presto, you find this handsome man sitting on his retirement gift and decide that this should be your cover picture on your introduction slide. Because of the licensing you realize that you are able to use it as you reference the originator. That is the beauty of OER. The material found and used is all free. Some licenses have more restrictions than others regarding the release and modification of the original work but it’s free.Sites like Wikimedia Commons and Flicker allow you to both publish and use information. One of the things that I found interesting is that you can search by license. So if you’re specifically looking for things that you can use under a Creative Commons license you can.
- Understanding the licensing restrictions could be an entire lesson on it’s own, but here is a quick snap shot of basic definitions. When researching for material to use making sure that you reference the material properly and understand the licenses associated with it is key. One of the problems I ran into when looking is getting to the original license. For example, if an individual creates a product and uses copy righted information then marks it as a Common Core License then it is not really properly sighted so you may not want to use it. Much like APA, it’s important to make sure that you include all the sources for the document you’re using. If a product has been added to or adjusted then it requires that you reference both the originator and the person that added to it.
- There are more sites that can be listed but these are a few that we have used in class. As I continue I will continue to collect from people that have found others so we can have a good list of references to use.
