Societal GIS for Ooty, The Queen of Hill Stations Ooty is one of the most scenic hill stations in South India, known for its famous gardens and highest point Dodabetta. It is part of the Western Ghat ecosystem and home to ancient tribal populations. There is a need to improve civic amenities and make tourism more eco-friendly. A societal GIS was created using an Android mobile phone to map drainage systems, public toilets, ration shops, and settlements of the Thoda tribe over two days. The open source QGIS was used to demonstrate the GIS at an environmental education center in Ooty.
