Continuous integration, delivery and deployment (CI/CD) is used to support the collaborative software development process. CI/CD tools automate a wide range of activities in the development workflow such as testing, linting, updating dependencies, creating and deploying releases, and so on. Previous quantitative studies have revealed important changes in the landscape of CI/CD usage, with the increasing popularity of cloud-based services, and many software projects migrating to other CI/CD tools. In order to understand the reasons behind these changes in CI/CD usage, this paper presents a qualitative study based on in-depth interviews with 22 experienced software practitioners reporting on their usage, co-usage and migration of 31 different CI/CD tools. Following an inductive and deductive coding process, we analyze the interviews and found a high amount of competition between CI/CD tools. We observe multiple reasons for co-using different CI/CD tools within the same project, and we identify the main reasons and detractors for migrating to different alternatives. Among all reported migrations, we observe a clear trend of migrations away from Travis and migrations towards GitHub Actions and we identify the main reasons behind them.

Bridging the Gap: from Data Science to Production
A recent but quite common observation in industry is that although there is an overall high adoption of data science, many companies struggle to get it into production. Huge teams of well-payed data scientists often present one fancy model after the other to their managers but their proof of concepts never manifest into something business relevant. The frustration grows on both sides, managers and data scientists.
In my talk I elaborate on the many reasons why data science to production is such a hard nut to crack. I start with a taxonomy of data use cases in order to easier assess technical requirements. Based thereon, my focus lies on overcoming the two-language-problem which is Python/R loved by data scientists vs. the enterprise-established Java/Scala. From my project experiences I present three different solutions, namely 1) migrating to a single language, 2) reimplementation and 3) usage of a framework. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach is presented and general advices based on the introduced taxonomy is given.
Additionally, my talk also addresses organisational as well as problems in quality assurance and deployment. Best practices and further references are presented on a high-level in order to cover all facets of data science to production.
With my talk I hope to convey the message that breakdowns on the road from data science to production are rather the rule than the exception, so you are not alone. At the end of my talk, you will have a better understanding of why your team and you are struggling and what to do about it.

DevOps purists may chafe at the DevSecOps term given that security and other important practices are supposed to already be an integral part of routine DevOps workflows. But the reality is that security often gets more lip service than thoughtful and systematic integration into open source software sourcing, development pipelines, and operations processes--in spite of an increasing number of threats.
In this session, we’ll look at successful practices that distributed and diverse teams use to iterate rapidly. We’ll discuss how a container platform can serve as the foundation for DevSecOps in your organization. We'll also consider the risk management associated with integrating components from a variety of sources--a consideration that open source software has had to deal with since the beginning. Finally, we'll show ways by which automation and repeatable trusted delivery of code can be built directly into a DevOps pipeline.
